How much infrastructure throughout North America will need replacement within the next 10 years? From roads, bridges, overpasses, sewers, water treatment facilities, etc. Think about that. There is a reason why pension funds are investing in infrastructure....

For those who are interested there will be a total of 25 IL-76 freighters operating through YEG starting in the next few weeks.

It will be two planes per day once they start, very loud aircraft that leave a big greasy stain in the sky.

Volga Dnepr,Ukraine cargo airways and Atlant Soyuz will be the main operators.

Hey guys, word I heard on Friday is that the Marriott has been shelved. They will likely be looking at it again in spring 09.

I imagine Marriott & other hotelliers are hurting right now. Many, Many companies inlcuding my own are implementing cost saving measures that include barring non-essential travel.

The downtown courtyard Marriott close to our head office is used to having more than half its' rooms occupied by company travellers from our firm. Ever since our stock value tanked (and it's actually a pretty good stock) nobody is flying anywhere.

I had a meeting about a month ago with a consultant that researches the economics of new development. They said that hotels in Edmonton have the fewest number of rooms available in Canada. Or to put it another way, the Edmonton area showed the best potential for new hotel development

Well not from anyone at EIA or Marriott, but the info I got was from someone directly involved with the project. It could be just rumour, but I would probably say its pretty accurate.

UPS to build $26-million distribution centre at Calgary airport

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - UPS Canada announced Tuesday it is building a $26-million distribution centre at the Calgary International Airport to deal with a big jump in the packaging company's business in Alberta.
The new centre will employ 415 people and house 157 trucks, the courier company said in a release.
UPS will continue to operate its three separate distribution centres in the Alberta city until the new 150,000-square-foot warehouse begins operating in October 2009.
"Calgary is clearly Alberta's premier international gateway for cargo today and in the future and this new facility will ensure current and new customers continue to receive expedient, reliable and convenient service," said Mike Tierney, president of UPS Canada.
Since 2003, UPS Canada said it has seen a 60 per cent increase in the volume of orders from the greater Calgary area, particularly from the retail, technology and financial sectors.
UPS Canada is a unit of UPS (NYSE:UPS), the world's largest package delivery company.

I'm actually looking to have some good discussion about the article posted above. Was UPS ever a big player in the plans for Port Alberta? Or is another air freight company planning on setting up shop? I seem to remember some rumours or facts on here of one company based out of Asia.

UPS sucks. We never get our packages until 430 in the afternoon (avg.) and as far as I know, Edmonton is the only city in NA with deliveries after 12 because we are so far north, and have to wait for our shit to go through YYc first. This is balls.

I work just a block south of UPS' current distribution centre here in Calgary, I'm not surprised at all that things get that backed up. It is a very small centre and clearly not up to the task with the current volume.

Perhaps when this new facility is on-line it will allow for shipments to flow much quicker to YEG?

I was just curious if this affects anything with Port Alberta, or if they are working with another air freight company.
