Why not just settle our differences and promote the Halifax-Moncton Growth Corridor?

No matter what happens Moncton will always have the telphone and transportation companies and Halifax will have ocean and institutional companies.

I demand the floor!

I say Halifax and Moncton come together and realize the strength of the Halifax-Moncton growth corridor. With almost 1/2 the population of the maritimes in this area we are together the dominant area in Atlantic Canada.

I say we get the area to work together to attract larger businesses and sports teams (ie CFL) and not battle over them...Im sure a lot more would get done in the end.

Champlain Place Mall renovations complete

MONCTON, NB-After 10 months of construction, the renovations at Champlain Place Mall, in Dieppe, are finished.

The mall features two new washrooms and a parent-and-me room in the food court, and all the mall's bathrooms are also now completely touch free.

There is also new flooring, along with ceiling treatments, renovated entrances and a new building facade.

Champlain Place General Manager, Neil Matheson says their food court has also been completely redone.

He says it's now much more modern, and will be able to seat an additional 150 people.

In total the renovations cost 14 million dollars, and Matheson says they're hoping they'll be step towards making Champlain Place, not just a mall, but a destination.

The biggest problem I see here is someone commenting on another city in which they do not live in. If you want to make comments about another city, that is fine, but don't put down another city to promote your own, sounds like jealousy, not saying that you are jealous, but you make it appear that way. All cities have their problems, and to say that our problems are smaller than yours is stupid to say, and just going to start bickering. i live in Moncton, and I am not going to go to the Halifax forum and start calling down Halifax, or any other city that i don't live in.
This post isn't to make anyone upset or offend anyone, but I think you should leave Halifax problems and comparisons in the Halifax forum.

And some of it looks like "crap"!

Whomever did the tiling job, should never do another. Grout lines don't match up, there are uneven spots. Who chose the tile with the white lines in it should be fired...it looks like it's cracked or scratched.

That's my main complaint...some of it is great...some not so much.

Haha, I was walking through Champlain on the weekend and I actually thought they were cracked. I agree totally!

As for the city to city bickering... I thought we were done with that a few hundred posts ago. Come on guys, can't we all just get along?

Let's all agree to bash cities outside of the maritimes!

I thought I would recopy this post from BrettInHalifax in the "CFL in the Maritimes" thread here in the Moncton thread. I thought it was a very good piece of statistical analysis. The only quibble I have is that he multiplied by the average provincial GDP while the actual GDP in central Nova Scotia or southern New Brunswick would be higher than the provincial average. Still, an excellent effort!

The last time the subject of the CFL in the Maritimes was brought up on the radio, I did a little research. Both Moncton and Halifax have their talking points, "Hub of the Maritimes" vs. "Biggest city in the Maritimes"

I thought that what mattered was having the most people the closest, so I totaled the populations within 1, 2 and 3 hours driving (per Google Maps) by county to take into account all the rural residents. Then I compared to Regina, which I totaled by Statscan census areas.

But it isn't just people, but money that matters, so I also multiplied each total by the provincial GDP per capita to roughly estimate the economic clout of each city by radius. The leading populations/GDP are in bold.



Of course, Regina and Saskatchewan have a football tradition that you can't quantify, but I was surprised to see that the three places measure up pretty evenly (with Halifax the best site in my biased opinion). People are much more likely to drive 1 hour to a CFL game than 3 hours. I'll buy a couple season tickets to a Halifax team but would probably only go to one or two games a year in Moncton. And I'm a big CFL and football fan.

In the 2 hour radius, there is only 128,000 people of overlap between Moncton and Halifax, so maybe 2 Maritime franchises isn't completely impossible. Of course even 1 Maritime franchise is pretty unlikely without a 27 or 28,000 seat stadium.

All this means to me is that a case could be made for a team in either Moncton or Halifax. They both compare favourably to Regina.

The only thing I could see being a difference is the ammount of football fans per capita out west compared to around here.

I have a feeling Regina is more of a football town than Hali or Moncton. But that could just be an impression...I still think we should have at least ONE CFL team in the East though...they cant really call it "national" unless they have coast to coast coverage.

There's also the fact that it's a Pro league. I don't even watch football but I'd get a season pass. At the same time, I'm a huge hockey fan and I've only ever been to 2 Wildcats games in my life. Why? It's the QMJHL. I don't know any players. I never know if/when they are on tv and getting out of the colliseum parking is a b!tch. Living so close to UdeM, I could just walk to the stadium.

My brother-in-law in Saint John is a huge CFL fan and said he'd make the trip and go to every home game. When calculating travel + costs, it's not like every traveller would either have to drive back home or need to stay at a hotel. I'm sure many people in the surrounding areas have either family or friends in Moncton they could stay with.

I'm sure Moncton could handle 8 home games.

The only way a CFL team would work in any city in the Martimes is if it was Martime promoted as a Maritime team. Can’t be the Halifax ….or the Moncton… It would have to be the Maritime Marauders for example. You could set the head office for Halifax, stadium in Moncton and training camps and some other function out of Saint John. Promote it as a Maritime team and have local promotion in newspapers and radio that promote it as “our” Martime team. Calling it “Moncton’s team” or “Halifax’s team” won’t work, no local market that small would have enough to support.
