pudong's a boring place. not because of inherently bad planning, and certainly not because of its architecture. it's boring because it's a work in progress.

it certainly isn't houston either. it's half-finished and sterile and full of pedestrian-unfriendly gaps. but it certainly won't be some bizarro automobile-dominated place. the density and public transit (of the finished neighborhood) will make it functional.

pudong, dubai, and all these other grandiose yet incomplete places shouldn't be judged just yet. it will take some time before these places become holistic functioning, entities.

Cool, it almost looks better fully extended.

Have you been LC?
Havent yet, but it's on the checklist. I should be in the area some time next spring/summer. Would you reccomend earlier in spring or later in the summer?

Chandeliers are up in the lobby on the Georgia side - things are starting to look really put together. If you walk past the storefronts on Thurlow, you can easily imagine what they'll look like. Not quite sure what is going in on the first floor of the podium, but looks like they've got a ton of kitchen equipment set up? Things are coming along.

Late spring or early fall is the best time to come. The summer is disgustingly hot and the winter is surprisingly cold.

And unfortunately, they are very, very tacky. They look far too traditional (dare I say baroque) for such a modern-looking building. And what's up with that tiny, unassuming entrance on Georgia? You'd expect something grander for a signature building in such a prominent location. Sigh. Leave it to some interior designers to mess everything up (they're probably the same brilliant designers who thought it would be a good idea to put chandeliers in the lobby of the TD Tower).

Oh dear God, those pictures! They look like they came right out of Architectural Digest --- you know, the back part where they keep all the over-the-top historicist stuff. It's just too much. I think that's where many of these hotels get their ideas; they just go to the drug store, pick up an AD, and flip through the pages until they find something that's completely over-the-top.

I hate how the geometric square pattern on the outside of the our Shangrila (ie, the solar panels) clash with the chandeliers. It's really jarring, at least to me. Maybe we'll be lucky and they'll install large planters or something in front of the windows to block the view into the lobby!

Does anyone know if there will be an "S" logo lit up at the top of the building? Our skyline really needs more "punctuations" in the night.

I doubt it and I don't think the owner of the penthouse would appreciate any bright neon light out side of the window.

The City has prohibited any signage at the top of the tower - but there is supposed to be something up there that's more "artistic" than logo.

Bummer. Do you know why? They've permitted it on other buildings (Shaw, etc.). How come not here?

On the south-facing side, there is a blank square... It doesn't look like it has any function. I assumed it would be for the Shangrila "S", the one that I saw in original renderings.

Any self-respecting 5-star hotel in Asia would not be complete without a grand marble-clad lobby with some subtle or not-so-subtle feng shui features (and I've been in some 3-star hotels in China that still had 5-star lobbies).

Given that Shangri-la's name recognition is strongest in Asia, I suspect that's where most of their clientele will be from. Hence, a marble lobby with massive chandeliers is a minimum requirement.

With the exception of the Kowloon Hotel, I've stayed at the hotels pictured, and the lobbies are actually quite impressive in person.
