'Kirk' - Isn't that the vintage furniture store? Or was that the men's clothing store? Funny. Oh, and elevators on Star Trek are called 'turbo lifts'. I'm such a nerd.

By the way, I sent an email to the architects of the W, so we'll see what they say about it. I would say there's 37 floors in the building already.

Kirk is a furniture store. A very high end "vintage" furniture store. He has some incredible collectable and rare pieces.

And Gold Gnomes!

Ok, here's the skinny on the W Hotel height. I got an email reply from Anderson-Wise, the architects of the project.

Quote:
There is no current plan to add additional floors to the building. The building's numbered occupied floors go to 37 (there is no 13th floor, so the actual top-most occupied floor is the 36th). As you mentioned, there are several intermediate floors that occur in various locations in the building. These are most typically located in the venue portion of the building - not under the tower. The building will rise to 476 feet at top of parapet of the tower.

I was up at Mount Bonnell Friday afternoon (Oct. 17) Here's a photo. Doesn't look like it's quite topped out, but almost.

I took a bunch of other photos from several locations, but I have to go to Dallas (for my 30th high school reunion - yeah, I'm old ) and haven't had time to go through and fix them and upload them.

Here's three others, though, as a preview, until I can finish the rest.

From S. Lamar Blvd:

2 more from the TMI Castle

Superstition. Many Highrises do not have a 13th floor. Especially Hotels. Crazy to me... but some people refuse to stay or live on "13".

Yeah, it's a superstition tradition. haha Really though, they just "skip" that floor. The elevator buttons and signs and marketing info don't show the floor as being the 13th floor. Instead, they skip it and label it the 14th. So yeah, it goes from 12 to 14 floors. There is a 13th floor, but they just don't count it as that, they skip it.

It's so stupid. In Las Vegas, buildings will skip floors with the number 4 in them, because 4 is unlucky in a lot of East Asian cultures.

BigDogC got the chance to go visit 21 rio. The site is topped out. The developer is one cool mother-shut-your-mouth from dallas. he is developiong the apartments more like condos rather than student housing. The 21st floor facing south has some amazing views of downtown.

if only i had 2.5k/month to live there...lol

LOL that's silly, people actually still hold that suspicion??? I thought that had been passé by now..

Geeze what do people born on the 13th day of a month do??

And what happens to all these number 13 phobic people do during the year 2013 heheh.

Me personally I think it's a GOOD LUCK number...

Friday the 13th became "unlucky" because that was the day, Friday October 13, 1307, that the catholic church arrested and killed the Knights Templar in a power struggle. They pretty much destroyed the order en masse, and ever since 13 had been considered an unlucky number by the superstitious.

More about superstition and skyscrapers. In Asian culture, especially in China, the number 8 is seen as a number of prosperity and wealth representing good luck. Most Asian skyscrapers, especially the really tall ones in China, have their highest floor ending in 8. Several of their tallest buildings even have 88 floors exactly. Even the Beijing Olympics started on August, 8, 2008 (8/8/8).
