From the above link, looks like a Wednesday and Thursday departure to LHR effective October 29 and no return flight after October 25. Interesting timetable these guys have. AC updates their timetable weekly whereas a mammoth airline like LH only update their schedules once a month. Maybe they should follow LH's lead and do the schedule right.

A good route to take

Major airlines' recent history with Prince George flights not destined to Vancouver hasn't been a bright one.
In the past few years Air Canada and WestJet have each attempted direct service to Calgary. WestJet also had a non-stop flight between Prince George and Victoria.
The most recent failure was the controversial flight between Prince George and Seattle from which the city stands to lose close to $200,000 to Horizon Air in a risk-sharing venture based on the number of seats sold.
One destination is conspicuously absent.
Edmonton.
On online reader poll on The Citizen's website last week asked: "Which air travel route would you most like to see?"
The most popular choice in the unscientific survey was the Alberta capital with about 38 per cent of 886 respondents. Next was Victoria at 32 per cent and third was Calgary at 30 per cent.
Air Canada should consider those results the next time it reviews its flight schedules.
The airline's Jazz subsidiary, which flies smaller aircraft than rival WestJet, would be a natural fit for an Edmonton-Prince George-Victoria route.

Thing is I don't see Air Canada doing a routing like that as they would just route Victoria through YVR. YEG yes though.

-treaty rights? Nope
-medivac excuse? Nope
-access to gov of ab? Prolly not really needed

They shouldn't have any problems with flying into YEG (and I dont really see why anyone else does, with out vested business 'interests')

I could see CMA very easily fly the route with either a B1900 or a DO.328.

There is traffic there but not enough for a daily CRJ,737 etc...

I was in Sherwood Park tonight at around 6:30pm. I saw an airplane (Air Canada i believe) being escorted by what looked like 2 fighter jets south towards YEG. Anyone have any info as to what the fuss was about? Was there some kind of emergency or mechanical issue with the twin engined jet (looked like an A319 or A320)?

You saw A CC-150 polaris being escorted by a pair of F-18's.

The flights will occur for the next several weeks about every other day...

Troops coming home.

There are also a few C-17 and Antonov 124 flights scheduled for the next few weeks bringing back equiptment.

Any ideas of the serials of the two CF-188's please?
The CC-150 was 15003
And will all the upcoming flights have fighter escorts as well?

When I saw the above in south Edmonton they were in a very low tight turn, at only around 200 ft!!! and they were turning away from the airport, yet they came from the North, so appears they flew all over the city

The CC-150 is basically an Airbus A310-300 converted for use as a long-range transport for Canadian troops as well as some military cargo (it's not for use like the C-17 Globemaster III or the Herc, though!). There's five CC-150 in total, though two are being converted into tanker aircraft.

The two that were converted were done a couple years ago. They still have full capacity on their upper deck for pallets or people (full combi). Extra fuel tanks were installed centre line in the lower cargo hold.

I think with the C-17s being used for pure cargo flights, we will see the CC-150s being used more for passengers instead of charters for returning troops. Who knows, maybe the military will decide to convert another to the MRTT standard, fi they no longer need the extra cargo capacity of the lower deck.

Port of Alberta gets additional funding...

Federal investments strengthen Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor opportunities
September 03, 2008 Edmonton, Alberta

The Government of Canada is taking steps to strengthen economic linkages between Western Canada and the Asia-Pacific region through investments that will support enhanced commercial and economic opportunities.

The Honourable Rona Ambrose, President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of Western Economic Diversification, announced the total federal investment of more than $1 million today.

"These investments will help position Western Canada for success as it strives to capitalize on the tremendous trade and investment opportunities with the Asia-Pacific region's rapidly growing economies," said Minister Ambrose. "The partnerships announced today are key steps towards driving more and higher value activities through Western Canada's Asia-Pacific Gateway and Corridor."

A $320,000 federal investment towards the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada will support efforts in researching and developing Western Canada's value-added opportunities across a range of industries. The funding from Western Economic Diversification Canada, made through its Western Diversification Program, will contribute towards the total project cost of more than $1 million. The Foundation will draw upon its extensive network of stakeholders and experts to identify strategies and actions to build on Western Canada's competitive advantage as a Gateway economy.

Yuen Pau Woo, President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada commented, "The rise of Asia as an economic power will require profound adjustments in the way we do business, whether or not we do business with Asia. The generous support of Western Economic Diversification Canada will help us in our core mandate of equipping Canadians, especially in western provinces, to be more effective in their dealings with Asia and in strengthening Canada's credentials as a committed member of the Asia-Pacific region."

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada is a national, not-for-profit organization that serves as a centre of expertise on contemporary Asia and Canadian relations with Asia. The Foundation's mandate is to foster stronger ties between Canada and Asia through policy research, networking, and public awareness, serving the business community, government, and civil society.

In addition, a federal investment of almost $760,000 will enable the Edmonton International Airport to develop two key components of the Port Alberta initiative. The Airport will establish a logistics support centre that will serve as a one-stop cargo processing facility for services such as security and regulatory clearance. Funding will also allow for the development of a SmartPort Platform that uses state-of-the-art information technology for tracking and monitoring cargo. The investment from Western Economic Diversification Canada, made through its Western Diversification Program, will receive a matching investment from the Edmonton International Airport for a total project cost of more than $1.5 million.

"This new funding provides for two key components for developing Port Alberta at Edmonton International Airport," said Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO. "EIA, as part of the broader regional initiative, will become a major cargo processing centre with onsite warehouse and logistics facilities, capable of hosting multiple modes of transportation and acting as a catalyst for advancing global trade and distribution across the region and the globe."

This investment builds on Western Economic Diversification Canada's previous announcement of $1.5 million to support the building blocks of research, partnerships and plans for the Port Alberta initiative. Port Alberta has the potential to transform both the Edmonton International Airport and Edmonton region into a major North American warehousing and distribution hub that combines air, rail and road transportation infrastructure with links to Asia and the Americas.

Western Economic Diversification Canada is a department of the Government of Canada that works in partnership with the provinces, industry associations and communities to stimulate and encourage diversification of the western economy. It also represents the interests of the West in national decision-making.

The CC-177's are pure cargo, although nothing is to stop them from being used as troop transport, but hopefully for the troops, just over short distances.

One of the CC-150's is used primarily as 'Canforce one', or the Taj Mahal as the pilots call it...the front section is converted for priministirial use only...

Did you know that Cretian never flew in it! When he was in opposition, he opposed their purchase..and because of that, he stood by his word and never flew on them as prime minister...or that is what the pilot told us.

The two tankers have wingtip refueling drogue probes...not sure if they are permanently fitted or not...after all, are many CF-188;'s deployed overseas at the moment? Troop transport seems to be the main task right now, along with long range cargo for the CC-177's. But at least Canada has it's own A2AR capabilities again.

Kevin Smith blasts Air Canada
METRO EDMONTON
September 29, 2008 02:13
AnswerTips-enabled

Kevin Smith is an honorary Canadian.

“I f----- hate Air Canada,” the famed actor/writer/director said in his blog yesterday after he was locked out of our home and native land on Sunday – and his Sunday night Edmonton show cancelled – because he was denied a seat on an Air Canada flight.

Though he arrived at the Los Angeles International Airport more than an hour before take-off, the airline had overbooked the Edmonton-bound flight.

Smith’s blog complaints strike a chord with anyone who has ever run afowl of Canada’s largest airline:

“After waiting in a line for fifteen minutes, with no announcement that they were closing my Edmonton flight, I get to the desk, where I’m told it’s too late: I’m locked out of the flight. And when I’m like ‘I’ll ditch my luggage. Can’t I just get my boarding pass so I can get on that plane?’ I’m told ‘No. They won’t let me ticket you. The flight’s closed.’ ”

It’s not the first time Air Canada has screwed up transport of something important to the Great White North.

In August 2004, the airline lost Canada’s most precious non-religious artifact – the Stanley Cup – after it was bumped off a flight to northern B.C. due to weight restrictions.

It was found after several hours of panic and frustration.

Smith’s latest film, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks, is said to be getting as rough ride from U.S. censors. It is due for release Oct. 31.

Smith’s Edmonton show has been rescheduled to Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. at the Winspear Centre. Tickets are transferrable or can be exchanged for a refund until Oct. 4 at the Winspear Box Office.

^while i feel bad, anyone who misses a flight has no one to blame but themselves 98.99999% of the time.

I just dont get how its possible to over book a flight. Dont they account for how many seats they have or have not sold?

Usually someone will always miss a flight, if everyone shows up somehow, then you could have a problem. That is how you ensure your planes are full, especially when some of your customers have fully transferable tickets and can miss flights all the time, and do so, because they can and that is what they pay for when they buy a full fare economy or business class seat.

Also, on Air Canada, if you have high enough status you can show up and bump a coach passenger even if you didn't book a ticket.

On transborder like that, they might have closed the flight earlier and let a stand by passenger go. In that case, it is 100% smith's fault.
