It isnt about one or the other though, it is about encouraging smart growth...growth that utilizes existing infrastructure more, that reduces depletion of special areas or sensitive areas, and promoting urban living by not only reminding people it is an option, but simultaneously RE-INVESTING in mature or core areas to have the services/sports/parks/etc. that they need to draw people there.
I agree 100%....except smart growth doesn't really play in to this article.

I know that developments like Windermere are the inevitable result of what the market demands, but does that really justify unending sprawl Gary? Really?
Well, at least that explains why The Venetian must be good.

^it kinda does...that city of 200,000 looks to have densities far higher than sherwood park, a good step forward.

windermere same thing...and as much as i dont like it, cities in NA "need" places like this to house the needs of many many people. It will be one of the nicer new areas it seems and that impresses those who want more housing options in this city.

True enough...I guess my beef is this endless promotion of over-consumption as a need rather than a want. I may not agree with Kunstler all the time, but I wholeheartedly support his thoughts on the misallocation of resources that our car-centric society has championed.

And by the by, the documentary "The End of Suburbia" played last night on APTN (I think) last night...Definitely not my favorite urban planning related doc, but I'm thinking that's where Gary found the inspiration for this one

That lamphier article is BS. He missed a crucial argument in the "they buy it so they must like it". Most of us would love something like a M5, but the cost to buy it is prohibitive because the cost to make it is large. When we end up buying something we have to settle for something that we don't exactly want. Unfortunately, even though the cost to build sprawl is large, the cost to purchase (to cover building and maintenance of infrastructure) is not scaled properly when it comes to other housing options.

We all must make choices based on economics, but when it comes to housing the economics that drive those choices are flawed.

^that's a very good point.

But recently he's still become a shill for some reason. "And now for the sponsored portion of my 'article'..." It's weird.

I think using the blanket assumption that 'they buy it so they must like it' is flawed. Fact is, there those who prefer the suburban lifestyle and those who would like to live in mature neighbourhoods where they are closer to work, good established schools, but can't afford it. So they live in the suburbs where you get more home for your buck.

From my inbox:

HOW TO PROPERLY PLACE NEW EMPLOYEES

1. Put 400 bricks in a closed room.
2. Put your new employees in the room and close the door.
3. Leave them alone and come back after 6 hours.

a. If they are counting the bricks put them in the Accounting Department.

b. If they are recounting them, put them in Auditing.

c. If they have messed up the whole place with the bricks, put them in Engineering.

d. If they are arranging the bricks in some strange order, put them in Planning.

e. If they are throwing the bricks at each other, put them in Operations.

f. If they are sleeping, put them in Security.

g. If they have broken the bricks into pieces, put them in Information Technology.

h. If they are sitting idle, put them in Human Resources.

I. If they say they have tried different combinations, they are looking for more, yet not a brick has been moved, put them in Sales.

j. If they have already left for the day, put them in Marketing.

k. If they are staring out of the window, put them in Strategic Planning.

l. If they are talking to each other, and not a single brick has been moved, congratulate them and put them in Top Management.

Finally, if they have surrounded themselves with bricks in such a way that they can neither be seen nor heard from, put them in Government.

**And with that, Have a good two weeks folks, I am off for a BC road trip, & will only be able to check in where I can steal WIFI. Try not to kill each other... pix upon my return**

Wow... interesting... Tricrop signs have been popping up all over the place in the past few months. I would LOVE to see that crappy parking lot developped!

I actually believe that this is somehow tied with Ironwoods development. The type of space is the same (condominium) as is the size and starting dates.

Gotta say, I don't mind the clip art building. Maybe they should just stick with that.
