I know that people have been discussing hotels in the downtown area lately... Heres something to think about as well...

this was taken from a city planning commission meeting agenda a few months ago in the efforts of a search for a place for the public market.

Now that's a piece of infill.

This is a building in Portland with a similar shape and design as the 222 design. See the squarish/rectangular base. I think this building is very well done. But, maybe it doesn't appeal to a lot of people and maybe for you, too. I'm curious if you or others on this forum like it.
Orlando: I love it!!!! That's what infill should look like. Wonderful design. Thanks for sharing it.

Regarding 222, I would have to agree with Orlando to an extent. I think the actual building will be very nice. However, most of my opinion would be regarding the Main Street elevation, particularly the very well-defined curvature of the northeast corner. I think the Main Street elevation is going to make for a beautiful piece of infill.
I'm not looking to 222 as major skyline addition, but more of a decent sized, very sophisticated, infill project. I'm looking more to Tower 1 as a much needed addition to the skyline. I definately look forward to some addtional 450-600 footers for skyline enhancement.
I think I know where your tastes are probably leaning. Say something with a top like this below. Am I right? I would like to see a few of these, (I'm thinking of the creative tops especially!)

I'm also liking the main body of Gehry's Beekman in New York a lot.
Delts: Hate the Charlotte bldg. Looks like the next stop for King Kong, once he comes back to life in a sequel. Love the Beekman Tower. Going to go to NYC just to check it out, hopefully before Christmas. King Kong would never defile this building.

You know the Beekman Tower won't be finished 'til Summer 2010, right?

Both projects are done by MHTN.
Those MHTN renderings don't look very different from the finished product to me.

Stenar: No, I didn't. But I think I want to check out lower Manhattan anyway. It's been years, pre-9/11, and there is always something interesting going on in the crazy neighborhoods. Time to re-subscribe to the New Yorker and read the "About Town" section.

Plus, while the rendering of Zions Bank Tower didn't look as close to the finished project as it could have, the original rendering released back in 2003 did.

Having a tall hotel near the Salt Palace isn't going to encroach on Temple Square any more than all of the other tall bldgs around it that already block its view.
I realize that it needs to be, but can't it be just south-east of the Palace?

Also, as far as the encroachment on temple square goes, I realize that the church is largly to blame for many of the towers near the Square. It still bugs me that the COB wasn't demolished along side Keybank. I HATE that building in it's location and it's too.... um..... well, BIG I guess. If it were up to me I'd blow it up and build two 350-ft towers that weren't bland boxy behemoths. Something a bit more classy would be nice.

I Like the Transbay tower proposal in Sanfran... I love that design. I like the design for the Charlotte building too. And that Portland infill building has me more excited about the HP tower.

Also, I'm questioning the numbers on the convention list... are you SURE that Agel only brings 3k people? It seems like way more than that attend. BTW if any of you want to buy Agel products from me, lemme know They work wonders

'Major renovation' announced for downtown First Security Bank building.

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700250968,00.html

Scott G. Winterton, Deseret News

The Deseret/First Security Bank building, once slated for demolition, now is being touted as an essential office structure in the LDS Church's $1.5 billion City Creek Center project.
A "major renovation" is planned for the historic building that will allow it to be utilized as office space in the downtown development, said Mark Gibbons, president of City Creek Reserve Inc., a development arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"The building will receive seismic upgrading and be an important part of our office space downtown," Gibbons said Thursday during a presentation to the Downtown Merchants Association on the progress and future plans for the 20-acre residential, retail and office development.

Salt Lake City theater-site talks are under way

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/1,5143,700251021,00.html

Salt Lake City theater-site talks are under way

Mayor Ralph Becker expects to announce by mid-October the site for construction of a Broadway-style theater in downtown Salt Lake City.
Negotiations are under way with owners of the handful of properties identified as potential sites for a 2,400-seat theater capable of hosting first-run touring Broadway shows, Becker said.

...The city's top options, according the committee, are renovation of the historic Utah Theater at 148 S. Main, the former Newspaper Agency Corp. press site on Regent Street, the parking lot behind the Peery Hotel on the corner of Pierpont Avenue and 300 South and the parking lot on the southwest corner of 300 South and West Temple across the street from the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center.

...The Downtown Theater Action Group also recommended that the city consider two other sites — land available as part of the Camden Centre development planned on the block between 100 South and 200 South, and 500 West and 600 West; and a three-acre parcel immediately north of Grand America on the corner of 500 South and Main Street.

Though the city is keeping its options open, Bill Becker told the Salt Lake City Council during a work session Tuesday that the NAC site would be his top choice.

"I do love that site, but we couldn't pick just one," he said. "They all have advantages and disadvantages."

One advantage of the NAC site, Bill Becker said, is its ability to have entrances on both Main and Regent streets.

The Utah Theater site, meanwhile, is attractive for its Main Street frontage, but not for historic preservation reasons, he said.

"The interior of that theater has been stripped," Bill Becker said. "Except for the lobby, there are none of the original decorative elements in that theater. There's nothing to preserve."

The "extraordinary" entrance is the only part of the theater that could be restored, he said.

Salt Lake City is in an unofficial race with Sandy to bring a Broadway-style theater to the valley. Private developers are working with the suburban city to build a 2,400-seat theater to anchor the $500 million Proscenium, a 12-acre mixed-use development at approximately 10000 South.

Leaders from both cities have said the Salt Lake Valley can only support one such theater.

Jill Remington Love, Salt Lake City Council chairwoman, referenced Sandy's plans when asking Bill Becker whether there's a need for a Broadway-style theater downtown.

"I keep wanting someone to tell me a need for it other than not wanting our arts to drift to Sandy," Love said.

That answer and others likely will be found in Salt Lake County's cultural facilities master plan, scheduled to be released in September.

"I'm confident that it will show that downtown is the best place for the theater," said Vasilios Priskos of the Downtown Merchants Association.

FYI: that tower was designed by the same firm in Portland that is designing all of the towers and key bank reskin for the City Creek Center. So, Towers 2 & 5 will be very ultra sleek like the one I posted for all or you to look at. The firm is ZImmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership. They also designed the LDS Conference Center.

The LDS Conference Center, aka Little Kremlin, is one of the worst buildings ever built in SLC. Could it be any more Soviet looking?

I think they were trying to design something that was a reflection of the culture/LDS values. So really, they did an excellent job!

I know, Let's all get someone who is LDS, or Catholic, or Protestent, etc., who is disgustingly bigoted against gays, and put them in a pen with Urbanboy. Perhaps, they can beat the bigotry out of each other.

There is a differance in your analogy...

I love Virgina. It has everything. Ocean (clean ocean), islands, hills and small mountains and the country side is gorgeous. The cities are basically an in line population like the Wasatch Front...however it is about twice the population.

When you sight the Richmond population including Petersburg you are basically talking about a small city that is less than 14 miles from Richmond.

If we took a contiguous area that was basically the size of the Wasatch Front, then you are talking about well almost 4 million people. Norfolk/Newport News onto Richmond. This is not a continuous population but it is very, very close to the same kind of inline populous of Ogden to Provo.

Having said that, I must say that they did a really nice job in the actual auditorium. I've been there for a few concerts with Sissel and although it seats 21,000 people, it has a very intimate feeling. It doesn't seem so immense and you don't seem too far away from the stage.

On the outside, there are a few nice elements here and there, but taken as a whole, it's rather ghastly.
