Stenar, thanks for all the great info. on the convention specific stats.

Regarding 222, I would have to agree with Orlando to an extent. I think the actual building will be very nice. However, most of my opinion would be regarding the Main Street elevation, particularly the very well-defined curvature of the northeast corner. I think the Main Street elevation is going to make for a beautiful piece of infill.
I'm not looking to 222 as major skyline addition, but more of a decent sized, very sophisticated, infill project. I'm looking more to Tower 1 as a much needed addition to the skyline. I definately look forward to some addtional 450-600 footers for skyline enhancement.
I think I know where your tastes are probably leaning. Say something with a top like this below. Am I right? I would like to see a few of these, (I'm thinking of the creative tops especially!)

I'm also liking the main body of Gehry's Beekman in New York a lot.

YES! I like that building (the top one) The top one would look great if it was around second or third south. I bet it looks awesome when its lite up at night. I would however like more buildings that aren't as tall as that one around it, so it doesn't stick out way too much. But hey id still rather have on that big whether it stood out or not.

I don't get where people think 222 is going to have curvature. The Main Street elevation has two slight angles.

Actually, I don't care so much for that hi-rise you posted from Charlotte, either. Sure the top is a little more interesting, but overall, I don't care for the design of it.

I really like the Federal Court House in Portland:

Utah may never get anything quite like these, but here are some other buildings I find interesting:

The one in the middle, I like:

I like the overall shape of this one, but the finish materials and horizontal lines make it rather ugly. It could have been nice with different exterior materials:

Good work. I didn't get a very good look at 222, only a "furtive glance."

I think you are wanting something with more of a striking shape, right? Like a pointed top or something like that? Check this picture out:

This is a building in Portland with a similar shape and design as the 222 design. See the squarish/rectangular base. I think this building is very well done. But, maybe it doesn't appeal to a lot of people and maybe for you, too. I'm curious if you or others on this forum like it.

Whoa, it's almost the exact shape and size:

Ok, so a couple floors short.

Thats amazingly similar in shape and size. Oh, and you're right Stenar, 'curved,' would be a poor choice of words, angle is better.

That building isn't bad, but they've done interesting things with the different shades of glass and the upper floors have a different treatment than just going straight up/flat.

Yes, but ours is taller and has a nice crown. Plus, our more simple sleek design won't distract from the lovely architecture that surrounds it.

It will look really good at night. At least it greets the sidewalk better than the Wells Fargo, and also includes retail.

I think that 222 S Main will look really good when it is finished and will look amazing at night when the crown is all lit up and other lights throughout the building are on. Lawyers like to work late will keep lights on in the upper part of the building where they have already leased space.

222 rendering

Again, the rendering is not a very good rendering of the finished product. It was probably rendered by MHTN, which is not a rendering company.

For example, check out the rendering of the Zions Bank Tower reskin by MHTN:

http://www.downtownrising.com/projects/images/ziontower.jpg

and compare it with the actual built building:

http://www.jacobsenconstruction.com/uploads/4010_3.jpg

or compare the rendering of the lds church history library from rendering to actual built.

http://www.downtownrising.com/projects/churchlibrary_project.php

http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=115696&page=321

Both projects are done by MHTN.

I still am not able to post pics. How do you do it again?

I think we already discussed this before but I kind of liked the original design for 222 South Main better- with its gabled roof and "lightning rod." (I think most forumers found the lightning rod tacky but I kinda liked it- maybe if it wasn scaled down a tad). I thought the peaked roof and spire helped break up the cereal box vibe, much like the "angle" on the East elevation. Plus how many buildings downtown have a lightning rod? I kinda feel like the current roof design is the same "lighted glass" excuse- similar to the borg cube.

hamiltonpartners.com

Fixed it- Thanks T-MAc.

When you post, there is an insert image icon just above your message box. It looks like it has a mountain and a sun on it. You click on that icon and a box will appear. In this box you have to put the http: address of that photo. The reason you have to have a flickr, imageshack, etc account for your own photos. Otherwise, just right click on a photo and grab its address and insert it in the box and click ok. This now has put the IMG brackets around the address of the picture and poof there it is.

Land sale could make way for transit-oriented business

SLC's development arm is in negotiations to buy the industrial area near intermodal hub to foster an urban neighborhood

By Paul Beebe
The Salt Lake Tribune

"We don't have a specific intent [to develop the property] other than to further the goals of the Depot District project area," Baxter said. "They are, broadly, to encourage transit-oriented development and to foster the creation of a medium-density urban neighborhood with a wide mixture of land uses."

An industrial property near the intermodal hub will have a blend of uses fitting with an increasingly transit-oriented character of the neighborhood, if the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City goes through with its plan to buy the land.
Following fast-moving discussions, the RDA agreed July 22 to buy nearly 3 acres of land on the northeast corner of 600 West and 300 South from Salt Lake businessman Alan Cohen and two family trusts.

Earlier this year, The Summit Group was negotiating with the Cohen family to buy the property. The Sioux Falls, S.D.-based hotel developer hoped to build a five-story Holiday Inn and an extended-stay Staybridge Suites across the street from the intermodal hub.

"Their thinking was that the hotels would be medium-rise structures but also, around the base, the buildings would include a wide array of retail shops that provides guests, as well as travelers and visitors, easy access to a pretty good selection of retail goods and services," Baxter said.

Alan Cohen said several groups considered buying the land. The most promising discussions were with The Summit Group, but, "for whatever reason, they backed out."

If that article is true, that is music to my ears. I always thought the two five story hotels with a parking garage idea behind them was fairly horrible.

Maybe now, we can get Steve Aste and his buddies to buy the land....

http://www.kahrrealestate.com/OM%20Sample,%20short.pdf

much better proposal, than the 5 story hotels.

I'm going to wait until it's finished before saying whether or not I like it.

Obviously it isn't striking, but for filler, it isn't too bad. I expect it to look really good at night, with the top glowing and the blue & red of the Wells Fargo Center and One Utah Center reflecting off its glass.
