Ohhh ok. That's too bad. I think it would be a great idea for the Bayfront to zip up from Burlington Street for a quick stop here.

When I was in High School, I would take it from Queenston/Nash to Greenhill/Mt Albion and jump on the 11 Parkdale to Valley Park.

It certainly is a crazy route, so why not add another bit of craziness to it w/ a stop at The Centre? Ar least the Drivers would have a good place to break!

Never ridden it but it always seems to pop up in the strangest places.

I hope they go with the Greater Hamilton Shopping Centre too.

I'm hoping for a Zellers like the one in Waterdown - they have their own windmill to generate power.

Centre Mall final site plan approved

The Hamilton Spectator
(Jul 5, 2008)

Centre Mall's redevelopment just got its final site plan approval from the city in the past few days.

The project is now about five years behind schedule, Don Burton, senior vice president of Redcliff management company half-joked.

The iconic east Hamilton mall is in the midst of an estimated $100-million redevelopment.

Construction has begun on several new banks, a Shoppers Drug Mart and a small office plaza.

"We'd hoped we'd have more buildings open by the end of the year, but that won't happen now," said Burton.

However, Burton said an announcement is expected in August for two major tenants and the new Zeller's store will be completed by Christmas.

He said Redcliff is also in discussion with a number of "category killer" retailers such as office suppliers, electronic dealers or in the toy business.

Superstore and new Canadian Tire format most likely.

Staples and if lucky Best Buy.

Can the city support all this new retail? Does anybody have any references of study's that look at cities with huge amounts of retail locations?

It's just that once Centre mall is complete the new Loblaws will be 5 min from a Fortinos at Eastgate. If Bestbuy goes in, it will be 5 min away from a Futureshop at Barton and Centenial. New Zellers... 5 min away from Nash and Queenston Zellers. New Canadian Tire, 5 min away from 1 year old Canadian tire at Nash and Queenston. Which is 5 min away from a giant Lowes and 6 min away from a Home Depot.

Oh, and lets not forget Meadowlands 2.0 being built at Stonechurch and Red Hill Parkway, only 10 min away. What happens if there isn't enough business for all these stores?

You'll likely see a lot of consolidating happening. You have some Future Shop closing down to make way for Best Buy or relocating a Future Shop elsewhere to make way for a Best Buy. You have Sears moving to Eastgate and Wal-Mart wanting to relocate from Eastgate to the new Smart Centre at Centenial/QEW.

With the Red Hill opening I can see some retail victims happening along Centenial.

I'm sure most people will argue of it's 1950's vintage, but I just don't see it in my eyes. I kind of blame the owners in the past 10-15 years for letting it go to waste.
I actually prefer the current mall to a power centre type of place. I don't particularly care about the vintage of the mall... I just prefer one format over another.

I have no doubt that the area Centre Mall is in will support the retail that is going in. It's not going to be too different from what's there now, just bigger and more modern. The only store that sticks out as truly different in my mind is the Future Shop/Best Buy. The others will just be upgrades of existing stores (Canadian Tire, Zellers, Great Canadian Superstore, banks, etc.)

I don't think those will be the two announcements. Everyone knows that Can Tire and Superstore are coming. You can even see them in the rendering.
I wonder if it'll be more 'destination' spots like Starbucks or a name brand clothing store?

also, I think Centre Mall will do fine despite the huge amount of retail now. Folks who live in this area have been driving to places like Eastgate, Limeridge and Meadowlands. I have many friends over there and they always travel afield to shop.
Now they won't need to. As for all the suburban box stores...I'd like to think that we're beyond saturation now. but we've all been warning about that for years so no surprise.

The Canadian Tire and Zellers are just replacing the exisiting stores. I can understand the new Zellers but the Canadian Tire is in pretty good shape. Maybe a new format store with a Marks Work Wearhouse inside?

The Loblaws or RCSS or Loblaws Superstore as I think they're calling the new locations now, should have better prices on most items than The Barn that's currently there now.

based on the rendering, the CanTire looks just like the one on Queenston Rd.

Yeah, The Barn is owned by A&P/Dominion and they are always more expensive the competition. I don't know why because apart from being open 24 hours, the shopping experience is nothing special.

Current Canadian Tire at Centre mall is too small a format. All stores will eventually be moving to the new format (like the Queenston location).

The Barn at the Centre is really tired and grimey. Good for pedestrian target practice though.

I can see a Best Buy coming to the Centre Mall, since the only other ones close to it are in Burlington and theres one to open soon on Golf Links rd. in Ancaster...
