Put me down in the 'don't like it" column.

I really like the look of the Metro condos, but these just don't do it for me.
Its like they were trying to create the Metro "look", but with exterior materials that happened to be on sale that week at the hardware store. The red seamed metal on the roof of the Kirtland Condos is especially bad. Were it not for that, I could almost like them.

I personally can't stand the look of Angelina's Corner. It's no wonder they are having a tough time selling those. I think the Kirtland Condos are a step above Angelina's Corner and the Metro have to top the list. By using those colors, I think they shrunk the target market big time to a handful of people.

I have to say that although I appreciate the developer's attempt to try some new here, Angelina's corner still looks like it could blow over in a wind storm. The architecture is reminds me of a "on-the-cheap" version of a project called "The Vale" in Tempe, Arizona. Still each new development serves its purpose in creating a critical mass in the downtown area, so in that sense, kudos to Angelina's Corner. May their second phase make many improvements upon the first.

I think the Kirtland Condos look ok for their location, but don't realy like Angelina's Corner. I think the breakouts on the corner building make it look ok, they help breakup the otherwise boxey look. The building behind it though, looks like your typical suburban appartment building IMHO, and don't realy like it.

Thanks T-Mac!

I suppose I should introduce myself. I've actually been lurking around here for a few months, getting my daily dose of Salt Lake and keeping tabs on all the developments going on - your pictures are truly a gift to the forum, T-Mac, much appreciated even by those who don't always participate.

I'm originally from Utah (Clearfield), but have been gone for 5 years now - spending a year in Chicago and then moving here to Arizona to go to school at Arizona State University, studying Housing & Community Development in our College of Design. Finally I graduated this May, and I am working for a luxury apartment developer here in Phoenix. Still dream of ending back up in Salt Lake though, and I'm definitely a big supporter.

Happy to join the forum, you guys have some great finds and interesting insight.

Cheers!

Some pictures of downtown from around the S-Curve on 400 South:

I also went by Trolley Square. Not much to see yet. They are working on the parking on the W. side of the complex, but nothing has risen above street level yet:

the metro look great to me. I just wish we didn't fill up 200 E with 7 story structures.

Kirtland looks like barf to me, as well as angelinas corner. I love the idea of making colorful buildings and such, but the actual design used on both of them look very unattractive to me. Angelina corner looks like a nice burst of wind would knock it over. I also can't stand its parking situation. just my .02

Thanks for the pics Arkhitektor! This is one of my favorite views of the SLC skyline.

Yeah, Thanks Ark, I also like this look down 400 so. I hope to see this particular corridor develop upward someday soon.

Delts: Agreed! I really like Angelina's Corner, simple yet striking. It appears to be small, mixed-use, retail below and residential above, which is an idea I'd like to see repeated over and over again and SLC develops and neighborhoods re-emerge (hopefully). I like the buildings placement on the property, with the corner being prominent--it says: "Come in and buy something." Very inviting. I also think the building fits the environment.

I found this interesting....its a clip from the article a while back about developers focusing on mass transit.

http://www.sltrib.com/News/ci_9537078

"You need to be slapped around," Wasatch Property Management President Dell Loy Hansen said, targeting suburban planners who won't embrace transit.

Long-time developer Dell Loy Hansen said, “Single-family ‘McMansions’ are going to be a poor investment relative to inflation.” All of the 1,700 housing units he’s building in the next few years are going to be in mixed-use developments clustered around transit stations. “That’s where the value is,” he said. “We’re staking our company on it.”

I wish we could get some more information on any downtown developments he has planned.

Speaking of Wasatch Property and Dell Loy Hansen when are we going to hear about his 33+ story Tower that was planned for 400 South and State? Ever since they pulled out of the 222 South Main project last year we haven't heard any more about these guys. Come on Dell Hansen!.... Rocky is no longer mayor....get developing!!! LOL

I was just wondering if we'd heard anything more about that. This is the project downton I realy care about, enough with these stupid 300-400 foot buildings, lets get something taller!

Not that the other DT projects arn't cool to. (222south Main,CCC,ect.)

agreed IFTowner, the COB is one ugly hunk of rock. I think though that you will start seeing some good things coming from various developers. The rising oil prices is the best thing that has happened to this country in decades.

I'm sure downtown will continue to add many more attractive towers such as the Chase, Westgate, Wells Fargo, Zions, new Tower 1 and Hamilton, etc. Like RC14 and SLC Projects, I'm very anxious to see the Downtown break the barrier and move up to the 500-650 ft. height range. I think that will happen soon, especially with the Sandy and Gehry projects pushing the envelope.

As far as the COB, I'm sure the LDS Church will update their offices sooner rather than later. Be patient, I mean, it's not as if they don't have enough projects on their plate right now. Keep in mind that the COB, while definately dated, is surrounded by one of the most beautifully landscaped urban plaza's in the world. Also, they've recently completed a very attractive make-over at the north entrance. As far as the tower itself,(I especially dislike the north side of the tower) I've seen far worse towers in just about any city I've visited. Infact Iftowner, I'm curious as to why you're using that particular Avatar? I've googled as many images as I could, to get a feel for it from every angle. Frankly IMO, it's much less attractive than the COB by a long shot, but that's just my opinion and I'm sure there are those who like it, just as there are those who like the COB. Is their a plan to give that particular building a reclad in the near future? Again, please don't think I'm being overly critical, as I also look forward to a reclad of the COB as soon as possible. I think we all have buildings in downtown areas, which we would like to replace. I'm just curious as to why you chose that particular tower as your avatar?
