Very interesting, it would be great if you could post a scan or photo of text/photo in the book.

I doubt whomever owns it, or owns it in the future would try to restore it...it looks so far gone.

Well think of the economic benefits the company owning would have. Would you rather live in a refurbished Capri or a fully restored Empire Hotel. Sure you'd pay probably 100 000 more for your condo or loft but considering the location why not, I know I would be a definate investor....if I had the funds

As well for a redevelopment project regarding the capri; brick is a relatively cheap material to use, so using this to restore the building would actually be quite economical. I was speaking with a designer friend and he said it is actually quite rediculous why developers don't either use all glass or a classical styled brick building b/c it is a simple design, easy to build and uses cheap materials.

CTV: Potential locations for new Police HQ to be made public tomorrow, conceptual design work won't begin until a property is purchased.

i wonder what the location will be, i still hope it will be in riversdale, i believe that if it is built there it will be one of the major steps to renew the area to its former glory

hmmm, I'm going to completely disagree with you there, I think little chief was a good addition to the neighbourhood, but if the current police station is much too small, then they will need a large area and there isn't too many areas in Riversdale that would accomodate that...maybe between 20th and 22nd somewhere, but if detering crime is your sole motivation, then I really don't think it would even make too much of a difference...myself and some close friends have lived here multiple years and have not yet had any problems....in Nutana on the other hand, one morning I woke up to see half the cars on my street had windows smashed and I've heard more stories of people getting jumped on a friday night by some drunk frat kid on Broadway than 20th Street. I may just be lucky, but I think the health of the people and their look of being more ragged than the college aged kids around Nutana, gives Riversdale a much worse rep than it deserves and putting the police station here in hopes it'll clean up crime, may just re-enforce that perception that this neighbourhood is so rough we need a huge police station to overlook the area.

.....and if you wanted solely to look at high crime stat areas....you might want to look somewhere like Lakewood, it's traditionally had some of the highest crime stats in town.

The other thing is if you walk around Riversdale right now you'll see sooooo many houses being renovated and cleaned up and sooooo many young-ish people walking downtown to work. The area is changing quickly and putting the police station here would likely be a fairly short sited move, just like it would have been to put it in Nutana 25 years ago, when the Broadway Theatre was a porn theatre.

I'm thinking north downtown, or the city yards area...for the police HQ.

I guess the question is, what will become of the old police HQ?

Perhaps the old police HQ, once vacated, can be demolished and the new central library built in its place. Since it's already a municipal property it's a possibility worth looking into IMO.

Interesting possibility... first the police HQ would need to built somewhere (2-3 years construction?), then the old police HQ demolished, construction of a new library (2-3 years construction?)...4-6 years, completed by 2013-2015?

Still thinking the city yards, they need to dump some public money in that area as a catalyst for private investment (just a thought)...police HQ or new library would fit the bill nicely.

I completely agree with the new library going in place of the police station when it is demolished.
As for the new police station, I am willing to bet money that it will be going in place of the Barry Hotel on 20th street. I could be wrong, but something tells me that is a very strong possibility.

Hmmmm, current owners intend to demolish...too bad the city didn't purchased the property for a discounted price a few months ago, though still a possibility.

Would love to see the new police hq in the north downtown/city yards area. Maybe along 25th street after the extension. What we really need is for Cameco or PCS to build its hq, in that area. Would really change the face of the downtown core.

i dont think the warehouse district would be a good place for cameco or pcs to build head offices, id put them in the heart of the downtown. If the city decides to expand 25th street it would be a perfect place for the new police station along the extended street and the library in the johndeere, since the johndeere building wont be attached to any major roads an expansion to the north with a similar idea to reginas possible future library(too lazy to find it)

and mabey a pocket park to the west where a stip of tracks are right now that would connect 25th and 24th

well where ever they will put it hopefully be a good spot

just curious did anyone find a map of what everygreen will look like ?

I'd really love to see the police HQ in the warehouse district and I like the idea of the public library moving to where the old police HQ are, I feel that would be a much better move then building overtop of 23rd. Maybe they would build a 6 story glass structure to compliment the lighthouse, could be very unique.

I do believe the open house for evergreen is tomorrow evening so someone def has to nab up some information regarding it!

Re

Some crews have been doing work in the City Yards cleaning up the fenced area that houses a lot of the bricks for the sound walls, and their pallets. They also tore up one of the parking lots behind Jax and have been working at a "city worker's pace" since then lol. The lot of the building they tore down at the end of 25th is cleaned up, but there is a lot of stuff still in the way before 25th can be extended all the way through; does anyone know what the light blue building standing right in the way of 25th is for in the City Yards?

To add to the downtown vacancy number Suncorp Valuations Ltd is taking up the entire third floor of the Campbell Wilson Millar Building on 1st Avenue. The fourth floor will be meeting rooms and a lunch/lounge for staff of Suncorp as well as a law office and a finaical adivsor office which is currently there. This completly fills this building and if you get the chance be sure to check out the offices. Very modern and very cool designs throughout!

Yesterday I attended a luncheon with the 3 bids(business improvement district) exectutive directors. They all talked about the new initative to link the 3 downtown areas called "the crescent". Broadway, Riversdale and the downtown. The directors talked about their respective neighborhoods and what they hope to develop and and expand in the years to come. They were all great speakers and very, very passionate about what they are doing.Retail vacancy downtown as well as Broadway is at zero percent and as rivesdale continues to clean up, Randy indicated they expected to be quite "broadwayesque" in the coming years. A direct question asked if he knew what was goin on with the barry site after its demo'd and he, i think ligitimately, had no idea. maltman is pretty quiet and with the moving of his main tenant(lucky horse shoe) from the adilman, he may need to start making decsions.

Terry Scadden the partnership exec, commanded a lot of the conversation and he sat at my table before the panel began. He told us the busiest corner in saskatoon was 21st and 2nd at 2000 in an hour during the summer! i think this has been mentioned on here before but still, an astonishing number.

I think it would be really awsome to see Riversdale turn into another broadway (along with Sutherland). 20th could become like Calgary's 17th Ave which would be VERY exciting!
