When I had my business in downtown Montgomery we had more problems with the land owners. They could have cared less whether THEIR buildings were leased or not. Dexter is one of the most historical streets in the south and with all of the businesses that were and are boarded up it makes it look like the ghettos. Then came along RSA and the New Judicial building it appeared and still appears that this Avenue will once again shine, as it once did. I remember when Sears, Belks and J. C. Penneys and Kress and H. L. Greens and Newberrys and later Pizitz Dept store were the mainstays on Dexter along with many specialty shops and some of the best restaurants around. I was there when Urban Renewal came and tore up Dexter for about 24 months and placed a two block canopy on both sides of the street ( a dumb idea, and looked horrible ). I also remember when there were three homes on Dexter on the third block from Bainbridge, next to Dexter Methodist , should these have remained ? I have always believed if you do nothing, dont complain when someone does. Keep it up Montgomery, the old blood had their chance and they failed.

I was reading the Huntsville thread and noticed this post concerning signs that are going to be installed in Decatur, AL. These look nice, so I wanted to share this post with those of you that might not have read that thread.

Something of this nature in Montgomery would be a good addition to downtown.

At a banquet in Birmingham in late May, Mayor Bobby Bright accepted two awards from the Alabama Chapter of the American Planning Association, honoring the efforts of the city's Planning and Development Department.

The Outstanding Planning Award for a Plan was given to the city for its Downtown Montgomery Plan, adopted by the Montgomery Planning Commission last year. Hundreds of citizens had input into the plan during a nine month process.

The Frank M. Setzer Outstanding Urban Design Project was awarded the city for the design and construction of Court Square Plaza, completed in April 2007. The award is named in memory of Auburn University Professor Frank Setzer, who established the Urban Design Lab in Birmingham.

Continental Airlines announced today that it will discontinue service to Montgomery Regional Airport on Sept. 3.

The airline flies two daily non-stop routes between Houston and Montgomery.

The airline announced it will reduce its capacity by 11 percent and cut about 3,000 jobs as part of the move.

It is dropping service to 15 cities and reducing flights to others.

No it's not.

With fuel prices where they are right now, it is VERY difficult for a 37 or 50 seat regional jet to make the money necessary to sustain the route. As the articles mentions, MGM is not alone. A total of 15 Continental stations are being closed. Lets hope this does not continue. With the proposed Delta/Northwest merger, our air travel options at MGM are dwindling.

I noticed on the way in this morning that the construction fence on Union Street was down as well. That said, it is still set back a LONG way from the road and is very monolithic with all the concrete, stone (granite/marble), etc. that greets you at ground level.

If you did not work or have business there, it is not inviting at all. Who knows, if the truth were told, it might not even be inviting if you work there...

drunk guy drove his jeep into the fountain tonight. watch wsfa in the am for the story. he only got one tire in and i didnt have my camera. he was arrested and taken to the station.
