Welcome to SSP catIII, and thank you for the information regarding Saskatoon airport operations, clears up much of the confusion....I have another question regarding Saskatoon airport runways, are they all designed to handle any sized aircraft, from the small Cessna --> larger commercial carriers, or is there some restrictions?

For those of us not familiar, what is the reasoning behind or what is the significance of not having terminal airspace...what is terminal airspace?

Terminal Airspace is airspace around an airport for the use of arriving and departing aircraft. Basically, it's a more precise way to provide control of aircraft by providing radar vectors, sequencing and separation in areas of higher traffic volumes. Improved radar coverage in these areas enable controllers to keep airspace organized and improve efficiency. Without this airspace aircraft can be delayed by other aircraft because Air Traffic Controllers have to keep a larger 'bubble' around an aircraft which causes longer delays.

With regards to the runways at YXE, rwy 09/27 is 8,300 ft long and rwy 15/33 is 6,200 ft long. They are capable of handling most aircraft, but are not long enough for economic departures of a large aircraft like a 777 or a A340. But, for the most part they can handle all business jets, most commercial airliners and most military machines.

Okay, with the cat out of the bag, what can you tell us about these conceptual expansion plans for YXE. Based on an optimistic outlook for the Saskatoon/Saskatchewan economy, how long before an expansion plan is finalized and pursued?

And I'm not too sure what you basing your opinions on in regards to the bolded statment as Saskatoon's passenger #'s aren't that much bigger than Regina's. As well for the past year or so, YQR is taking on much of NFTC's workload from 15Wing as they are trying to catch up with backlogged missions due to no ATC on base in MooseJaw on weekends. Either way, both of Saskatchewans major airports are doing very well which is great news for the province.

I never, ever meant for this to be a XE versus QR debate. I wasn't talking in PAX numbers, movements is a better way to express how busy an airport actually is. Saskatoon has both major airlines of the province based there. Which would be the reason that the airport has nearly 30,000 movements more a year than YQR does. And, the 1.03 million pax that went through Saskatoon last year, includes a few of Transwest Air's and all of Pronto's Sked flights through the terminal, but not charters from the Aerocentre or West Wind/Transwest hangar flights. Let's assume WW has 7 daily flights, 4 being ATR movements and 3 1900/Jetsream or BE20 flights, that adds to the total picture, big time.

With regards to expansion at YXE, I could see it happening in the next five years (terminal), if things keep going the way they are, I think the next phase will happen sooner than later. There are times, even 6 months ago, when you can't find a spot to sit in the departure lounge. Saskatchewan Gov't is currently building a hanger by Air Canada Cargo, West Wind is working on a new hanger (which will be huge, rumors of them picking up a few ATR-72's) and there is a new hangar being built by PIC investments (Jim Yule) by the Esso, which is rumored to be an Esso Avitat and is supposed to be the start of a new charter airline.

Other things that are going on in the YXE airport community that might not be known... Canadian North is operating a stop-over (usually from Montreal) on the way up to Horizon to pick up workers and fuel... Suncor is chartering West Wind for flights up to the Firebag site, north of McMurray, as well they are operating flights with their RJ900's out of Saskatoon for workers. Pronto Airways is flying a scheduled flight up to Rankin Inlet and Baker lake, Air Canada mainline is back into Saskatoon flying to Toronto, four times a day with Embraers.

Regina is getting busier as well but, don't flame me for stating the obvious. In the end, it's great to hear that both airports are doing great.

It's really exciting to see Saskatoon's airport expanding so rapidly! Are those runway additions you posted the ones that are being done this year or is this year maitenance? I def think the airport will be expanding pretty quickly here. I'm a frequent flyer of the Saskatoon-Calgary round trip and every plane has been at max capacity! So that's saying something, Saskatoon is in demand, people know about it and people want to be here!

This sculpture is fantastic! I really hope they try to recreate the grasslands in that little patch of dirt around the sculpture, that would really complete it.

Thanks for the photos, I drove by a few nights ago and they still had it wrapped up.

Better than I expected, the story along with the artists depiction truly makes this among the best public art pieces in Saskatoon.

Not a huge criticism and I'm sure the laws restrict divergent design, but what does everyone think of the road signs (yellow with black chevron) encircling the statue (e.g. eyesore = similarly to our blue lamp posts on 2nd Avenue). Could or should they have sought a complimentary design to the surroundings while still serving their intended purpose to direct traffic? I don't care too much, but it is something I feel could use a second look. Overcritical? Maybe

With some gentle wind the prairie grass will sway just as Prairie Wind does, perhaps even a little more

Here's info from the city on a new neighbourhood in the northeast. According to my friend who works for the city, it was originally supposed to be named Springfield, but was changed to Evergreen to avoid the inevitable Simpsons jokes. Still, the Simpsons live at 742 Evergreen Terrace...

This neighbourhood could be interesting. It is planned to have some of the highest density of any of the non-core area communities.
