A question for Urbanboy or Future Mayor:

What program do you guys use when you show your idea for block plans? I have an idea, but it is too hard to explain in mere words and this would really help. Thanks in advance.

A private investment group in Denver has purchased the 53,000-square-foot Pierpont Building in downtown Salt Lake City and is preparing to open a new restaurant and club in it.

The historic Pierpont Building, which is actually two connected buildings, has been purchased.Ashley Lowery, Deseret News

That's awesome! I love that building. I was really sad when Cafe Pierpont closed. That was really good mexican food for Salt Lake!!!! grrr

Well mine are pretty basic, I simply save the image from google earth and make additions to it in paint. I haven't branched out from there although I should now that I am getting serious.

I asked Urbanboy the same thing one time and he uses a program called skitch. however when i checked it was only available for a mac.

LOL Let me rephrase my question: Who doesn't like Disney Land more than a refinery?

And yes, if you have a mac, you can use Skitch.

I thought it was a cool idea. I wish the state of Utah would get another theme park other then Lagoon.

I know I'm sort of jumping all over the place here, but I've been thinking about a site for a convention hotel that is in close proximity to the convention center, yet wont require the demolition of any of the Arrow Press Square buildings. This is what I came up with:

Something like these could work there:

or this:

Why not? I mean it's South Temple, right? It's one of the top ten streets in America...

or this :

Right on. I always thought a bigger Hotel should go there. I don't really like the "Plaza" that much.

Agreed Projects. I think its the Plaza that should have met the wrecking ball and The Inn that should have stayed.

That is a prime spot for a hotel Urbanboy. But isn't there some zoning ordinances in that area that would restrict the height of such a hotel? I think there are some restrictions in order to protect sight lines to the temple.

I like your choices of hotel designs urbanboy. Regarding what Wasden said about the Plaza. I would prefer the Plaza be raised on that corner and something along the same line as the Temple Square Inn be built in its place.

convention hotel

That location pointed out by Urban Boy is an excellent place.

OR, CHANGE TOWER 2 TO A HOTEL. That would be really cool. It would be in the heart of City Creek Center, and it would give CCCRI a reason to go ahead and build tower 2 instead of waiting.

I really like this one... I think they should do something along the lines of this. That would be perfect! Anthony

Temple Shmemple, I hope not! Think of the great sight-lines from the hotel! What about the church office building? How could they justify such an ordinance?!
If Brigham Young wanted to save the sight-lines to the temple, he would have placed it on Capitol Hill! There are plenty of sight-lines from around the perimeter of the Temple Square Complex.
Protect the sight-lines? from where? The freeway? Who cares about the flippin people... better yet, the boxed in people on the freeway? If they want to see the temple, they can actually visit downtown!

I don't think there is an ordinance. If there was, the original Triad Center plans wouldn't have been approved. They would have blocked the sight lines.

Market Station -South Salt Lake

http://www.marketstationliving.com/index.php

they have updated their website....

Everything you need, steps from your door.
As an urban village, Market Station is purposefully designed to enhance city living. It is an environment that focuses on facilitating the daily acitivities of living, shopping, and working within an environmentally friendly, self-sustainable community. At Market Station, you'll find shops, townhomes, and offices within steps of each other. Without a car, commute or traffic, you can run errands, buy concert tickets, mail packages.
Located at 2100 South and State Street, Market Station features more than 50 retailers and 250,000 sq. ft. of Class A office space. It offers 600 housing units, ranging from studio apartments to luxury penthouses.
Market Station is a turning point in the reinvention of South Salt Lake. With the cooperation of City leaders, you will be an integral part of a renaissance. The complex's overall style is an eclectic mix of modern, classic and industrial and traditional - different components working together.

I am really excited about what this project will bring to SSLC. I would love to see the area East of I-15 and North of I-80 turn into a really dense urban area. You got sugarhouse, Market Station, Downtown SLC, Gateway, The Avenues, The Uof U University, Franklin Covey area...etc...

Urban Boy I like your thinking on the convention Center Hotel. I don't however see the LDS Church giving up the block immediately to the west of Temple Square. As for CCRI building a hotel in place of tower 2 I don't see that happening either. I think if the LDS church was interesting in owning and operating hotels they would have kept the Inn and designed the block differently. The Plaza is slated to be remodeled and used for student housing for the BYU Salt Lake Center and LDS Business College.

I really would have liked CCRI to work with the downtown Marriott and allow them to expand their hotel and the LDS church could have simply been the land owner and leased it to the expanded dt marriott.

I think my vote for a convention center hotel location is to make it fit somewhere within ArrowPress. First choice would be to demo the Shilo and build a new one there. They could easily use the entire Shilo spot including the garage on the south side, maybe even include the parking lots across Pierpont and just to the west north of Ruth's Chris.

I do like all the designs that Urban Boy posted. I'm not sure the all wood one would hold up very well in SLC's climate.

If it means more Convention visitors touring temple square, I think the "brethren" may go for it. And it could possibly fulfill D&C 124:56, 60. God orders the building of the Nauvoo House, a hotel, in which Joseph Smith and his "house" will have "place" "from generation to generation (Jan 19, 1841)." Where is that hotel now? For a while, it was the Hotel Utah until that became the Joseph Smith memorial building. Then the Inn at Temple Square justified the "order from God." But now with the demolition of the Inn at Temple Square, where is this Nauvoo House that is supposed to be in existence so Joseph Smith's "House" can have "place?" or is his house now extinct, and it's not necessary anymore?
