Took a little drive today after work Downtown...

I drove past the future courthouse site. There are now two large piles of dirt on the old gas station site. Rather impressive in size too.

The Oddfellows hall is making progress to being secured for the move across the street.

Drove past the Ballet west academy site by the capital theater. The fence is now down. they have leveled off the site for the time being. I imagine this will be until They design the building.

Major Underground Oil Pipeline From Salt Lake City to Vegas

http://www.sltrib.com/ci_9473416?IADID=Search-www.sltrib.com-www.sltrib.com

By early next year, industrial partners Holly Corp. and Sinclair Transportation Co. could begin building a 400-mile petroleum pipeline capable of carrying tens of thousands of gallons of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel each day into Utah's Dixie and southern Nevada.
The price tag: $300 million.
The companies already have purchased the pipe and stacked it along the route as they negotiate the rights of way and permits needed to push the project south.

There was no official schedule, atleast not to my knoweledge. I contacted them a few months ago, and they said that there were no renderings available because they have not finalized the design. I expect to hear/see something start this year i hope.

Wow, they moved fast on that "pipe stacking". When I was called 1 month ago to assist them in the alignment through the Tooele County area they said they were still doing preliminary design.

Maybe that won't be so far-fetched in a few years. With the continuing rapid growth of the Wasatch Front, St. George and Vegas, a high speed train could make a lot of sense not too far off from now.

Looks like our gas prices will be going up in the near future because the regional supply will decrease and increasingly flow towards the city that only takes, Las Vegas. At the same time the liberal complex will not let us drill like we should for new oil & gas supplies (ANWR) or build new refineries.

An e-mail that i received in mid April of this year.....

At this time, HKS Architects is completing the Ballet West Academy / Capitol Theatre Renovation architectural program and cost estimate phase. When we move through to the design phase, Ballet West will be publishing those designs and using these for fundraising purposes. It is unclear at present when that will occur.

Thanks Viper, had you heard any info. regarding the design? Do you think they will go with something modern?

I'm getting this knawing feeling that some very big things are going to be happening for the northeastern section of Utah. Something tells me that a trade-off will be arranged and Utah will be allowed to develop oil-shale and natural gas. This Vegas pipeline could play a key role with forces such as Reid, Hatch and others pulling an oil development windfall together for Utah. I keep getting these strong feelings of a pending perfect storm gathering in favor of Utah's fortunes.

Salt Lake rental rates up 8.8 percent - Demand High/Supply Low

Housing crunch is a boon for renters, but not in Utah

http://www.sltrib.com/business/ci_9484234

- But the Utah real estate market remains healthier than many other parts of the country... In fact, strong demand for apartments pushed Salt Lake County rental rates up 8.8 percent from 2006 to 2007

- ARA said rental rates this year could rise another 6 percent to 8 percent.

- Rental vacancies in Salt Lake County, for example, fell from a high of 10.9 percent in December 2002 to 4.5 percent at the end of last year, the lowest in more than 10 years. The apartment market is considered fully rented when the vacancy rate is 5 percent.

Nope... the California Zephyr (sp) has continuing service from Sac into Oakland. Or, if you want to step off the train, meet me for lunch, and poke around the grid, you can still hop onto one of the Capitol Corridor trains that run 6+ times a day to San Francisco..

That would be sweet, however if they had an Amtrak or extended the new Provo line on down south... for that matter, take it north into Idaho while you're at it as well!

With the rent climbing through the roof in the valley I am surprised that we haven't seen some of these, Gateway area apartment projects that seem to be languinshing, break ground. In fact, I can't think of any apartment projects that are actually being constructed in the city.

Just a curious thought.

Salt Lake City is going to have a very lively skyline...

I have always wondered about why it looks so bland from some angles and so urban from other angles of viewing.

Someone tell me if I am wrong here.

Salt Lake City, for some reason, a little less than 100 years ago decided that Main and State were the pure boundaries of what would be the "downtown.

Within the last 20 years planning has added the west to east expansion of business construction. I remember when I was really young that the only building I remember being outside of the downtown (between State and Main) was El Paso Natural gas (I maybe am wrong about the name).

Now I see the horizontal (east/west) potential being realized. Do any of you feel that these areas are going to be pursued for true (above 250 feet) high rise development? Is there any potential buildings for outside of the pre defined Main/State street areas being planned?

Secondly, I have always known that the west to east view of the skyline was spindly indeed. I also knew that part of this was the elevation drop between South Temple and 5th South. Large buildings shrink from a side view. The tallest building (IE Wells Fargo) looks squat.

Does anyone know the vertical drop in elevation from South Temple to 5th South? It has to be considerable.
