I guess good aesthetics or good design is altogether in the eye of the beholder, cuz outlining a highrise with neon strikes me as an overly gimmicky concept. The Embarcadero Ctr in SF also is lit like that bldg in dallas, & I've never cared for it there or in texas. That type of exterior illumination has always made me think immediately of highrises located in the south or sunbelt, more than in a city like NYC or chicago.
I'm even more surprised you'd think something like tube lighting is good since you also said that a design that is simpler, plainer or more subtle, referring to seachlights pointed skyward on the top of a bldg, is "tacky".
Getting past lighting that outlines a bldg or has spotlights on top of it, I definitely prefer the format that I saw on top of the DWP bldg, next to the Music Ctr, a few nights ago. That's where the crown of the bldg, which glows with an orange color, is lit up. IMHO, that's more simple & yet more effective that what I imagine is the far more $$ to install, & also harder & more $$ to maintain, lighting system of tubes running around the perimeter of a highrise.
