Re

Anyone find it weird that they're showing the view from the East side of the building when the back of the building looks nothing like that on the ground level? There's a loading dock/elevator entrances and they're putting in what looks to be the entrance ramp for the underground parking. Maybe they're planning on removing all of that/making it flat? I'll be interested to see how that addition makes the building look when it's finished, hopefully it doesn't throw off the nice lines of the building as it stands right now.

Great pictures Sask, I'm really excited for the mental health facility I think that will be a great addition to the east riverbank without being to invasive. I sure hope there are no complementray additions to the Rumley, usually I'm all for change and growth but that building is a piece of art work and should be preserved as much as possible. I'd love to see some more corporate office development in Saskatoon but I think in order for the city to keep its unique charm the city needs to focus on High tech industry and research, which will cause a smaller skyline but like I've said before bigger isn't always better.

Speaking at the recent annual general meeting of the Fort Qu’Appelle and District Chamber of Commerce, Mitch Molnar of Mitchell Development presented a preliminary layout of the proposed Fort San Development. also the small parcel of land on 33rd street across from the mill has been sold to dominion homes. can you say possible student housing for siast? it is adjacent to that 2 storey retail with a spa and shoe store in it. the address is 86/90 33rd street east. only time will tell i guess
We'll do.

I've been watching that piece of land for some time now, student housing would be awesome, that site deserves density.

Nice big windows at the second ave lofts. The view from 1st ave looks better than the view from the front. Maybe they will improve the street level look by the time they are all done.

Demolition of some old houses on College. Anyone hear of what may be going up there? Anything will be an improvement. Those houses were really an eye sore.

Thanks jaysfan for the pic of the demo on College. I meant to get over there this evening and snap a pic.

As of about 4:30 this afternoon that 2 story house on the right was history as well. It appears that the one on the corner is about to meet its maker also and the house immediately to the left of this photo is being prepped to be moved off the lot.

I wonder what is on its way... townhouses? low/mid-rise apartments? Rental housing of some sort I imagine.

college drive houses

does anyone have a clue who might have even bought them? we were talking in our office this morning and we came up with a few possibilities:

ronald mcdonald house two? As far as we've heard they are at capacity and could use more space? could also explain why its so hush hush.

high end condos marketed to doctors? whatever goes there would need some ample parking. not much if any in that area during the school year. I could see some luxury condos or townhouses, great neighborhood and close to a lot of amenities.only downside would be the bust traffic.

rental apartments or dorms for students? why not, with apartments for students pretty much taking all of thier student loan money, why not eliminate any travel expenses and live across the street?

visiting lodges? i dont even know if that is what they are called, but the place where visitors to cancer patients or sick people can stay. there seems o be quite a presence of them along college so it would definetly fit in to its surroundings.

who knows, i guess we can wait and see once everything is down, what starts going up!

My guess would be a massive brown stucco box apartment building for students.

I'm thinking it will be some form of student housing since that is one of the most pressing issues for the university right now. Hopefully the university bought out those lots and they will be the developer. The university is known for producing some of the most beautiful and I guess the most tragic buildings in Saskatoon. Lets hope they will design using traditional canadian architecture (revival gothic) in any building they designs, if they are the owner and developer of that area.

Maybe "Delta Delta Delta" will build a partay frat house
But seriously, I hope it is for student housing. That would make the most sence.

More demolition pending

Barry Hotel gets spiritual cleansing
By Darren Bernhardt, TheStarPhoenix.com
Published: Thursday, May 29, 2008
The saccharine fragrance of burning sage and sweetgrass temporarily masked the smell of spilled liquor, dirty carpets and years of smoke inside the Barry Hotel.

With the notorious hotel slated for demolition in the coming weeks, a traditional First Nations cleansing and purification ceremony took place within its flaking walls this morning to bid adieu to the past and welcome a new beginning.

hope the new beginning is a good beginning, riversdale has so much hope, sutherland area supposibly is going to be the new broadway but it doesn't have the history and buildings to make it work, hopefully though the future barry building will not be a suburban strip mall

Hi everyone. I'm a first-time poster, long-time lurker.

It would be great if the University had plans for those five properties along College Drive, but that is not the case. If new, and desperately-needed, student-oriented rental properties are to be built along College, the University has nothing to do with them.

Instead, the U of S is trying to get funding in place to build family townhouses (200 beds) at Cumberland and 14th (NW corner). Souris Hall would them become a 1st year rez.

That is not University property, and this project has nothing to do w/the University. I'm anxious (like everyone else) to find out what's going on there.
PS: I work in Facilities Management at UofS (land, property, buildings, etc)

Hey another member, welcome to SSP madsad

As for the property along College, let us refer to our zoning bylaws and a map of Varsity View to understand what might be possible under current zoning.

I searched for any changes in zoning dating back to July 2007, as the subject properties changed hands several times last summer.

Here we go...

Varsity View zoning map (Revised 2006-02-22)

So I'll speculate condos, probably higher end type (bigger units=12-24 units)...or alternatively condos for students (smaller units=24-48+ units depending on height). Perhaps some parking space as well...hmmmm

I'd love to see a smaller ultra modern high end condo tower go up, I think it would really add to the area and make it more attractive for some possible urban renewal.

Babcock's Saskatoon sensibility the right fit for Red Wings
By Scott Burnside
ESPN.com
Updated: May 29, 2008, 7:17 PM ET

PITTSBURGH -- The question was basically this: What makes Detroit bench boss Mike Babcock so honest when many coaches fear the truth, especially when it comes to their own players?

"I'm from Saskatoon, and that's what you do," Babcock said with a smile during Thursday's off-day news conference at Mellon Arena, a day after he'd admitted to making some mistakes during Wednesday night's 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"Bottom line is, players make mistakes. Coaches make mistakes. I'm not [saying] we didn't have a good plan, weren't trying to do the right thing. Sometimes when you're trying to do the right thing, the wrong thing happens. That's life."

[...]

Earlier this week, he was asked about his philosophy on coaching a puck-possession team like Detroit. "I don't have a philosophy, actually," he deadpanned.

"To tell you the truth, since I've been here, for me, it's been a growing process," Babcock said. "You're always learning as a coach, just like anywhere you'd be, and you learn from having real good players. And you try to improve your game by being creative, but also by stealing the best that everyone else does so you improve."

What's that they say about not being able to take the Saskatoon out of the boy?
Source

I laughed out loud when he responded to the reporters question with "I'm from Saskatoon, and that's what you do,".

Ahhh, how sincerely simple we sometimes can be

The Saskatoon perspective is alive and well with Mike Babcock, coach of the Detroit Red Wings.

Some pictures of Saskatoon on June 1st.

I noticed this on top of the fifth floor of the 2nd ave lofts. Looks like a skylight. Is there going to be a mall inside?

The original plans show an central covered courtyard. Should be nice.
