lol i believe that the study stone is like the ugly friend you know but with a good soul. it gets the job done with its parade, but nomatter how much you try to make it pretty in the end it will just be ugly. i say leave it as is. we do not need another 20 story concrete building in toontown. it is special enough as is and for the foundation i am sure it can hold, it is called the sturdy stone building. but who knows

No longer the Meridian on Broadway....May 15th we'll see what's coming. In the meantime this'll have to do:

A fair bit of progress in the last few days.

Milroy tenants withdraw appeal
More than 50 tenants who backed appeal have new agreement with development company

Lori Coolican, TheStarPhoenix.com
Published: Friday, May 09, 2008

Tenants of the Milroy Apartments in downtown Saskatoon are withdrawing their appeal of a Court of Queen's Bench decision that upheld city council's approval of a plan to convert the building into condos.

More than 50 tenants who backed the appeal have reached a new agreement with the development company which owns the building, guaranteeing that at least 40 suites will remain as rentals, with annually-renewable leases available for a lifetime to long-term Milroy residents at rents comparable to other downtown apartments.

Residents currently living in a dozen other suites at the Milroy will also be allowed to sign annual one-year leases for their homes until 2012.

Tenants of the Milroy Apartments in downtown Saskatoon are withdrawing their appeal of a Court of Queen's Bench decision that upheld city council's approval of a plan to convert the building into condos.

If any of the 40 "long-term" suites becomes vacant during the next four years, those 12 tenants will also have the option of moving into the newly-vacant apartment - and the right to stay in the building for life.

The agreement with Viking Developments Corporation covers every tenant who helped fund the legal appeal against city council's decision, as well as tenants who actively took part in the months-long battle with City Hall by attending council and committee meetings, writing letters and gathering information.

Viking has the right to move them from one suite to another in the building, as long as it gives them 45 days notice and pays the tenants' incidental moving costs.

It's not the ideal outcome, since many tenants still think city council should not have allowed the conversion of the 156-unit highrise in the first place while the vacancy rate is at an all-time low. But at least the agreement gives some security to people who had been anxious about the future, said Martin Been, a Milroy resident who spearheaded the effort.

"There's a sense of relief in the building that it's over, because it's been a worry," he said.

"We're 11 months in, and people are just breathing a sigh of relief now."

The apartment building on Fifth Avenue North has long been home to a high population of seniors, some of whom have lived there for decades and never expected to move again. Been moved in several years ago to be near his elderly parents, who are long-term residents.

City council's approval of the conversion in January stipulated that existing tenants would have the right to remain in the building for two years from the date of the developer's application. The long-term residents' new agreement with Viking covers a much longer period of time, Been noted.

"It's more than we had at the beginning. Now at least we're protecting some people for life, and some others don't have to move for four years."

The tenants' disagreement was always with the city, not Viking Developments - and city council "still has a lot to do" to address the needs of Saskatoon renters, he said.

"If we don't like it, I guess we'll go to the polls (in the next civic election)."

Hopefully the Luxe sign is a resemblence of how sleek the building will look...as well I think the sturdy stone has its own charm and unique style. Saskatoon wouldnt be the same without it so I'd have to say I appreciate its charm and that a parking lot could look a hell of a lot worse then that.

I don't really have the patience to wade through the last few pages of the website, but has anyone mentioned the Ukrainian Museum that will possibly go up in the future? I was at the Vesna Festival this weekend, and they had a display about it. It's to go between St. Georges Cathedral and Parish Hall... and in my opinion, the building looks very nice.

I completely forgot about that museum, did they have a construction timeline available?

What makes the building nice?

No timeline yet... They are still raising money for the construction. I think they said they were around 1.1 million now... and they need around 3 million or so. They have the plot of land already though, so that's a good thing.

And the design is nice... looks like a traditional ukrainian from the carpathian mountain region

Not bad, I didn't think it would be so large, looks a bit larger than the Canadian Ukrainian Museum on Spadina.

I am confused, will this new one replace the Spadina Museum, or will we have two?

BTW, thanks for the pics Jaysfan, Saskatoon Square never looked so good.

There will be two.

From what I can recall, the museums have different objectives/exhibits and receive their operating funds from different sources as well.

The one on Spadina is the Canadian Ukrainian Museum, and I believe it is designated a national museum and receives grants from the Feds. The new one in Pleasant Hill is a Saskatchewan Ukrainian Museum, focused on Western Canada/Saskatchewan Ukrainian community? I think they get their funds from the province and the city, and also receive private contributions and very little if any from the Feds.

Thank you for the photos jaysfan99, I like the increased height for Saskatoon Square and the glass/white brick condo (the name escapes me).

I believe the province has granted the "Musée Ukraina Museum" a little over $500,000 with the "Building Communities" initiative or something like that. I don't think any funding has come from the Feds... so you could be right on your points.

In my opinion it could also be a little Orthodox/Catholic thing. I know the one in Pleasant Hill (which has it's exhibits currently in storage), was started by, and still has connections to the Ukrainian Catholic Church. The other one may have some Ukrainian Orthodox Church connection. I'm grasping at straws...
