So there is no way that is the incorporation of the hotel as well?

I don't think the hotel is being combined with the expansion. Might be a completely separate thing. This only talks of Expansion of the terminal and actual airport facilities, and has no mention of hotel

as in a different project all together. I'm not in the know, so I'm just speculating... but I think the hotel would be part of a different project.

It could still be attached to the airport though, just I don't think it was ever part of the terminal expansion...

Looks very nice! But what is happening to the north end of the terminal (where most of Westjet's flights come in and out of)? That part needs to be expanded and updated! It's so crowded when there's a lot of flights at the same time!

Tell me about it. I've been wondering from day one - why the hell on earth did the plans for a north terminal expansion for WestJet all of a sudden disappear? What the hell's been going on?

Soon we'll have the equivalent of YVR's B-Pier!

$1-billion airport expansion funding secured with ACFA

May 8, 2008
EDMONTON – Edmonton Airports has finalized a new financing arrangement with Alberta Capital Finance Authority (ACFA) to finance a $1.1-billion capital program at Edmonton International Airport (EIA). Robust passenger increases over the past three years and continued greater Edmonton region growth are driving the need for significant expansion at EIA.

ACFA is a special act corporation established in 1956 under the authority of the Alberta Capital Finance Authority Act (Alberta). ACFA provides local authorities within the province with flexible funding for capital projects at the lowest possible cost.

“We are pleased to partner with ACFA as we embark on a critical expansion of Edmonton International Airport,” says Reg Milley, Edmonton Airports President and CEO. “Being an ACFA shareholder allows Edmonton Airports to borrow money at favourable rates to finance airport capital projects that are so vital to our region’s transportation system and competitiveness.”

“ACFA approved a $200-million credit facility for EIA expansion in late 2006, and has now expanded that facility by $800 million to accommodate the major expansion now planned for the region’s anchor airport,” says Ralph Peterson, Edmonton Airports Vice-President, Finance, and CFO. “Edmonton Airports continues to earn very positive ratings by credit rating organizations and our ratings are among the highest of all Canadian airports.”

The most recent ratings are: Moody's at A1 with a stable outlook (January 2008); Standard & Poor's at A+ with a stable outlook (November 2007); and Dominion Bond Rating Service (DBRS) at A (high) with a stable outlook (January 2008).

Driven by sustained passenger increases, almost 50 per cent over the past three years, the five-year EIA expansion involves $70 million in work already completed or underway, including a 1,000-stall expansion to the parkade and significant aircraft parking space added last summer and fall.

Construction will begin in late 2008 on a new south concourse that will add 13 passenger gates to the existing 17 passenger gates, boosting the total to 30. Additional aircraft parking space, systems upgrades and other enhancements are planned. The expansion, when completed in late 2012, is designed to handle nine million passengers. The current terminal was originally designed to serve 5.5 million passengers. In 2007, EIA served 6.1 million passengers.

The $15 Airport Improvement Fee paid by enplaned passengers at Edmonton International Airport enables the expansion and improvement of airport facilities. Edmonton Airports has no plans to increase the Airport Improvement Fee.

So with international/transborder flights using the current south terminal, will the new expansion accomodate those functions leaving the current terminal (north and south) entirely for domestic operations?

EIA’s new brand boldly signifies Edmonton’s warm, friendly nature
$1.1-billion expansion to include new office/control tower complex

May 8, 2008
Edmonton, Alta. – Edmonton International Airport (EIA) today launches the new “we’ll move you” brand, tying together a fresh commitment to customer service, the implementation of time-saving technology and a five-year, $1.1.-billion airport expansion program.

The new brand and airport expansion program reflect EIA’s shift from a small, regional airport to a medium-sized international airport serving Northwestern Canada. EIA is Canada’s fastest-growing major airport for two years in a row and now serves over six million passengers annually, a nearly 50 per cent increase in just three years.

“Our customers and stakeholders told us they wanted this key community facility to reflect the bolder, confident attributes Edmonton has acquired to complement its warm, friendly nature,” says Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO.

At the heart of the new brand is a commitment to customer service – “we’ll move you.”

“It is our new call to action, our guiding belief, and our promise to all of our customers, stakeholders and ourselves,” says Milley. “On a functional level, we are going to do everything we can to efficiently and conveniently move our customers and their goods.

“We are going to provide the kind of customer service that you’ll remember – and that your visiting family and business colleagues will remember – because it was enthusiastically delivered by friendly, engaged ‘Edmonton’ staff.”

Future airport

The “we’ll move you” philosophy also underpins the $1.1-billion expansion program and current initiatives to incorporate industry-leading technologies, including common-use, self-serve check-in kiosks, Pay & Go parking stations, the expedited customs clearance program NEXUS and a host of others.

Along with the new brand, new details were released today about EIA’s expansion program.

A key new element is a new office-control tower complex slated to replace the current aging 1960s office-control tower. The new complex will serve the specialized needs of NavCanada – the agency responsible for air traffic control.

Additionally, it will provide more office space, restaurants and services as well as an integrated baggage room that will allow for customers to drop off their luggage at any designated point in the terminal. The new control tower will be located on the west side of the terminal adjacent to the current Gate 49 and is scheduled for completion in 2011.

The major expansion includes a new “hammerhead” terminal and concourse, extending from the current South Terminal. When completed in 2012, EIA will have the capacity to serve nine million passengers. The expansion will include new retail, food and beverage options and fit into a broader theme inspired by the brand that will offer a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

“It is a new day for Edmonton and EIA,” says Milley. “We have the best air service in our history, and the expansion, new technology and brand will help us continue to serve the needs of our growing community and to provide the air service and customer services expected of an international airport.”

Looks like the arrival/departure information on the website now lists codesharing airlines and flight numbers along with the actual airline flying and their flight number. A good revision in my mind.

Okay, I'm easily confused, is there or isn't there a hotel being built @ YEG and when is it starting?

Do these expansion plans have anything related to Port Alberta as well or is that an entirely different project?

It will be a Marriott Courtyard.
