Police Services Move To New Building

Police personnel are gradually moving into a new facility on Fourth Avenue North this month, easing the pressures on the police headquarters on Fourth Avenue.

Deputy Police Chief Bernie Pannell says the public won't likely notice any change in operations because the move involves primarily administrative services, the traffic section, cultural relations and community liaison officers.

The 30-thousand square foot office space will serve the police service for about five years until its new 91-million dollar building is ready for occupancy in 2013.

Pannell says expressions of interest for the design of the building are being sought, and police are looking at possible locations. He says once completed the new complex will consolidated the current 11 locations under one roof, improve detention facilities, and create a state of the art forensics facility.

Ready for occupancy in 2013 eh? I suppose the 25th Street extension and city yards/warehouse district will be ready for occupancy by then as well...IIRC, the city/police have considered a location in the warehouse district.

A new police station would take up a nice chunk of land (plus parking) on 25th Street.

i still think the library should expand to the john deere warehouse, it probally would be a perfect fit too. we can also then build a pedestrian mall where the tracks are to the right of the building and the police station nearby would definately keep it safe for the spaces we can add 5-10 story glass buildings that accent the of brick ware houses

this makes me feel all tingly inside seeing that there is finally progress starting, all we have to do for broadway now is build something over the old extra foods and i will be happy

You may not appreciate the 'aesthetics' of the extra foods store(which I completelly understand!), but it is an essential service to the neighborhood. Very few of these 'small' neighborhood grocery's continue to exist, and if we are serious about reducing emissions and helping the environment, then small stores like this should be mandatory to allow residents 'walking access' for their groceries in core neighborhoods like Broadway. For me, that would be one of the amenities I would consider when choosing a condo in that area.

I agree it is a pretty ugly 'eyesore', but maybe it could be given a bit of a retro face lift??!! Either way, I think it has to stay.

By the way, progress on the Indigo Book Store on the Circle Centre mall is progressing quite rapidly. Looks to be a pretty large store.

As for the new bookstore on 8th street, I think it probably cause McNally Robinson to go out of business. It is being built way to close.

I don't think it will cause mcnally to go out of business. Saskatoon is comfortable with mcnally and indigo will bring some needed competition which will force mcnally to possibly boost its services...ex. clean their washrooms. As well mcnally has live music nights and a fantastic little resteraunt which i dont think indigo has

oh and in addition to what i just said Saskatoon is still small enough that no matter where indigo would have been built if there is something there that the consumer wants they would make the treck so I don't think geographic location in the city will have that much of an impact.

Not sure, but I believe I heard the Indigo will have a Starbuck's, not a great restaurant like McNally's. They can have their 'starbuck's", as I would much rather get my java from Broadway Roastery (go local businesses!!)

In other exciting retail news, American Apparel is confirmed to fill the (soon to be) former Urban Barn location. Urban Barn is moving to Stonegate Village, where the Tim Horton's is.

I'm told most Urban Barn's in other cities are suburban. Saskatoon is one of the few places that is under the impression that Urban Barn is cool. That goes double for Earl's.

Don't know if this info has been posted before, but I have it from what I believe to be a reliable source that Sobeys will be building one of their smaller urban format stores downtown. I didn't get any dates.

That sucks about Urban Barn. The Mrs. and I always enjoyed a browse through Urban Barn during our downtown excursions. I guess we won't be going there again.

Any idea of a location? I believe Meridian was exploring a grocery option for the KG.

Continuing on the retail side, The Taj Mahal is leaving its Broadway location and moving the the former Arlington Gallery on 2nd. Keo's Kitchen will move from 33rd to fill in the old Taj Mahal spot.

I'd also love to hear more about Sobey's downtown plans.
