Hopefully there will be a timely update of the EIA website to reflect all this exciting new stuff - both the new brand, and all the new info on the expansion (including pics that can be clicked on to enlarge them!!)

Question: How come Edmonton doesn't hold any more Air Shows? i remember going to those when I was younger and had a blast. I'd love to take my son to something like that

The strip there is just a little too short for most military types...
Noise would be a whole other problem...

Here is the U.S.A.F. C-17 that was at YEG on April 26th, it will be back in the next week or so.

^ The C-17 Globemaster III is able to land and take off from amazingly short runways, and was designed to do so. And need we mention the Hercs that get serviced at YXD from time to time?

But yes, noise would be a problem. Unlike commercial aircraft, military aircraft of various types are not constrained by noise restrictions, industry requirements with passengers in mind, etc.

I remember having watched planes from the old restaurant at the Muni before consolidation of air services at YEG. The resto/bar's windows were soundproofed to the degree that even a 737-200's takeoff was pretty muffled. But when once I saw a B-1B bomber take off from the Muni (of course, there was the airshow at CFB Namao at the time) - it was almost like there was no soundproofing at all!!

The one I attended some time in the 90's (@ YEG) drew around 60,000. I won't forget actually seeing a Concorde take off and return from Hudson's Bay 45 minutes later... something future generations will never get to see.

i miss the airshows....my father always got invited to the namao ones VIP so we sat only a couple hundred feet from the runway.

I was at the last one at Namao in the 80s. They had everything there. B1 bomber - Steath Fighter - the largest cargo Plane - antonov 224 I believe - warthog.

Mayor Mandel recently used a very descriptive and accurate term to describe City LRT planning. That term applies to ECCA consideration more accurately.

I wonder whether or not information should be produced for the Edmontonian that would be more correct ! By whatever means should the article be shown wrong ? [

For me, it was good to read this forum and actually hear a pro-muni perspective. Probably didn't change my opinion (shut it down already!) but it's interesting to think of Edmonton as the "bush-pilot capital of the world" for a minute... aw screw it, build a bullet train out to Villeneuve!

part of the $1.1-billion airport expansion.

New Technologies
To ensure passengers move through airport as smoothly as possible and to minimize the terminal’s physical, environmental and financial impact, EIA is adopting “future airport” technologies such as common-use, selfserve check-in kiosks and check-in desks useable by any airline, adding flexibility to terminal and optimizing the convenience of the terminal for passengers.
New technologies include:

Common-use self-serve check-in kiosks allow customers of any airline to access their boarding pass at many points throughout the terminal – enabling them to choose a kiosk with the shortest line, and control their own seat selection.
Common-use equipment will also allow for passengers to self-tag baggage and check baggage at any location in the terminal.
Flow-through check-in counters create less congestion than the traditional counter set-up by having guests keep their baggage with them after it is tagged and then place it on a belt themselves. Research shows that flow-through check-in can reduce check-in time by one minute per person compared to traditional linear check-in counters. When you consider a fully-loaded aircraft may hold up to 140 passengers, that’s a lot of time
saved by our customers.
NEXUS technology allows members to avoid line ups and move more quickly through the border clearance process between Canada and the United States.
Pay & Go parking stations allow customers to save time by pre-paying for parking before leaving the airport terminal.
Common-use dynamic signage enables messages to be quickly modified and updated, helping passengers to find their way.

All of this is made possible through the partnership of the 65 companies and the 3,600 employees working at EIA (ETeam) who are dedicated to creating positive experiences for our customers, whether they are asking for directions, seeking information on airport services or going through security.

Nice. Looks like the control tower will be staying with the terminal. I suspect that tower/office addition might include a new public viewing area as it's partially blocking the view from the central hall.
