Yes the re-branding is something rather exciting and will reflect the goals of the airport in the near and long term.

Port Alberta is also gaining pace as several companies are already in talks with the ERAA, let me tell you it's nice to have them come to you rather than chasing them all the time.A strong Asian interest seems to be the focal point, although a few european companies are also showing a strong interest with one already serving another Canadian city potentially moving its operations once things gain momentum.

There is still more to come...

So when the Chinese delegation toured earlier this year was that a fact finding mission or was there negotiation involved?

The first Chinese delegation involved members from a very large chinese shipping company and the companies air cargo partners. They are currently in the ''final'' stages of implementing a long term plan to develop YEG into a new cargo gateway for themselves.

It infact would be more benefical than the companies current cargo gateway at PANC (Anchorage). For proximity to current markets and the other modes of transport to final destinations it would cut delievery times down rather dramatically.

Other companies showing interest are from S.Korea,Hong Kong,Japan,Luxembourg,Germany,England etc...

So I was at the new YOW earlier today... man, what a nice 'smaller' airport. It's really classy. YEG, take note. Anyone know the details? Start/finish...cost?

From Hicks on Six:

RUMOUR DU JOUR

That WestJet may soon announce daily non-stops from Edmonton to Newark International Airport (New York City)

Oct 2000, new terminal approved.
May 2001, construction begins.
Oct 2003, new terminal open.
Apr 2005, expansion of parking garage begins.
Apr 2006, approves new terminal expansion.
Mar 2008, first part of new wing open
Aug 2008, terminal expansion complete (if on schedule)

The new terminal cost $310 million and was on budget and completed on time. (is that even heard of anymore?)

The expansion should cost $95 million and is so far on budget and on time.

There are fourteen gates in the new terminal. The expansion adds twelve more positions for aircraft (although they are not all gains, since the airport is losing a number of positions with the demolishing of the old terminal.)

The airport is also planning a third phase of expansion that would likely add around 10 more gates, probably within the next 10 years or so, but depending on the demand the airport experiences.

YOW is probably the nicest airport I've ever seen. So many things were done just right, and beautifully at that.

I really wish people would use airport names instead of codes for the less obvious airports for the sake of "code challenged" readers like myself.

Either that or we need some kind of automatic acronym highlighter with hovertext descriptions.

I too would like to see a West Jet flight from YEG to Houston or Dallas-Forth Worth. I know for one I'd be going there a lot more if there was the flight.

The flight will likely be a ''seasonal'' flight (Spring, summer).

Likely hood from talk around the office, 90%.

YYC's WestJet EWR flight is also seasonal.

IAH and DFW are not cities served by WestJet, so the likely hood of a YEG flight to those cities is not likley.

WestJet has however been looking at IAH and the other Houston airport HOU or Houston ''Hobby''.Although to my understanding Hobby is more of a domestic/regional airport.

*Anyone with a camera may be interested in knowing a Private 747SP will be at YEG for a few days in the coming week's.Some people just have too much money...I believe its going to be at the EFC FBO on the north end of the field.I will post dates for those interested once I find out.

WestJet didn't serve Newark till last year either. They said they are looking at other major business centres like Chicago ORD and Houston IAH.

Hobby would be great, especially if WestJet ever as able to get their reservation system to work with other airlines!

It is a good Southwest hub.

Hopefully both the Calgary and Edmonton Newark flights get off the ground, I am not sure WestJet would try for a third time if they get burned twice.

Would that plane be here for maintenance? or just a visit to West Edmonton Mall?

One little problem - Hobby Airport doesn't have the proper customs facilities to process passengers on airline flights from outside the US, although it does allow GA traffic from Mexico and Central America and probably the Caribbean. I don't know if they'd allow for flights from Canadian airports with US Preclearance like YEG to US airports without immigration facilities for international flights.

I imagine it would be similar to the situation with LGA. Although it does have customs, it doesn't have sufficient facilities to allow international flights except for those that are precleared.
