In today's star phoenix there was an article on and an architects rendering of an office building being built at the old OK Economy grocery store site adjacent to the Public School Board office (old Army and Navy building). Although it is great to see construction happening down town, I personally think the design is quite disappointing from what was shown in the paper. Yes, it does have glass(!), but still a very unimaginative design with it still being quite boxy....where is the creativity among architects and developers. On the PLUS side, it is being built to LEED standards! Hope to see more new construction taking this approach.

Looks like a hospital. I am getting tired of waiting for one good modern glass office tower to be built in this city. The economy has never been better here in Saskatoon, and we still can't attract anything worthy. Looks like a peace of crap!

I guess I'm just thinking opitimistically. I know there could be a much more impressive structure going up in that location but I know there wont be. Saskatoon has a LONG way to go before some fantastic modern structures come, for the time being this is a large step for the city. All I can say is it looks a hell of alot better then most of the 70/80's disasters the city already has. Those are something to over.

With all this boring talk of downtown office buildings and condo developments, I thought I would bring us back to something exciting: suburban big box shopping. A quick look at the Smart Centres website reveals the following list of tenants for Stonegate:

Not everything can be 30 stories! You want a mixture of buildings and designs and I think this building looks pretty good and rather appropriate for the area. Some adjustments could be made to the nearest corner to integrate it with the street better.

At least there is no parking lot fronting the street!

I think the building on the former extra foods site looks good, and it well definately add to the streetscape allong the avenue. But it should really be taller.

We often talk of the need for Cameco to have office space. I work up in the North Industrial and Areva has their headquarters for Canada in Saskatoon on 45th St. W. It would seem they have run out of office space becuase they have occupied the building across the street as well as an office down the road by Ave C. There is no doubt there is demand for class A office space. Nothing has been announced yet that will satisfy it. Development's like this if they go ahead are welcome news, but I want to hear something that will make a statement that Saskatoon is actually growing their skyline as well as population, and economy.

Not everything can be 30 stories? Do we even have a "office tower" in Saskatoon taller than 18 stories? I know we have some really ugly condos that are kind of tall, but name one nice office building taller than 18.
I'll settle for a new modern 20 story office tower in Saskatoon in the next 3 years. Thank god for the Lake Placid development. Let's just hope they start building it soon.

That's because the market does not call for a 30 story office tower. If the demand is there, then someone will build it.

Four story buildings can do plenty. I personally would rather see a plethora of vacant lots being eaten up by smaller developments than one gigantic tower. That's a person opinion of course, but they will do more to add to the streetscape and make the downtown more attractive overall.

Regina has two, one across from the U of R and the other in a big box power centre.

It appears people either love it or hate it.

I actually heard news in regards to Hooters. Because of the laws that exist in regards to strip clubs, Hooters was not able to get a liquor license. I don't know how true that is....given that Hooters isn't a strip club. In any case....hope you guys land it!

I can't imagine a better fit for their demographic than Saskatchewan.

I don't really see how our liqour/strip club laws apply to Hooters either, unless there is some weird wording in the law could be interpreted to mean x y or z. How does Hooters differ from any other bar with scatily clad waitresses?

With all these new dining options (Taco Del Mar, Hooters, Chili's, Original Joe's, Avocado...) I may never have to set foot in a locally owned restaurant with an actual chef again!

I don't think we'll see Areva downtown. They were downtown years ago and had a break in. Computers were stolen and tons of data was lost. Of course downtown has no monopoly on break and enters, but the powers that be at Areva have been scared off. Their current head office is like a fortress. You have to get buzzed in just to get to reception.

Yeah, I don't really understand the logic behind it either, but again, not sure how accurate that is given that I heard from someone who heard it from someone, sort of thing.

I tried Avocado's (it's only a chain of two, no? One in Calgary and Saskatoon? I tried to justify eating there by telling myself it wasn't a megachain....was I lying to myself?!) I was pretty unimpressed, food was bland. I asked for the spiciest salsa and they gave me something milder than what I can buy at the store.

Avocado is terrible. It's like going to Moxie's and ordering a burrito, except the whole menu is "mexican'. I think there's only two now, but they plan on taking over the world soon (along with Original Joe's).

For really good Mexican in S'toon, try La Bamba. It's out of the way but totally worth the trip for gauc alone.

Areva isn't looking downtown ... expect to see them nearby in the Airport Industrial.

I commend North Prairie for building something downtown, but Stantec has designed one ugly building for them. Who cares if it's LEED, it's an eyesore. They should lose sustainability points for that. It look like it was designed in the early 1980s.

I heard that foundation plans are near completion for the Ken Achs project on Broadway. Has anyone seen renderings of it recently?

as four the 4 story office i am quite disapointed, we have enough 4 to 7 story buildings in our cities downtown. also why would they not put residential in it to add a couple floors and/or be more creative with the design
