^^I hope this version is built, too. The other versions are far too safe and a little too similar to the building next door.

FIDM Proposal - Safe Version

This is for a design school, right? I would think they would want something a little bold. I'm sure money plays into the equation, but I'd like to see something very different that will really gives this school some exposure that says "hey, we are a school of creativity". I don't know if those large windows are a result of an interior functions, or if they are randomly attached, but I like them. They add interest.

I agree. I've always been a fan of buildings with little odd quirks. I really hope FIDM goes with the funky building over the nice but boring design.

Now if only something would be proposed on the other corner of 9th and Fig.

I actually like this design much better than the funky one, it compliments, well, everything around it, and I love the whole cluster it, the Hanover, and Concerto make up.

I went to FIDM and I'm familiar with the school in and out, and i feel that the quirky design suits the school's image well. This is one alum's opinion.

I like the base looks interesting. Tho I would go with the funky design but at the same time I like the glassy look also. The best it the density and the retail that its going to bring FOUR towers in one BLOCK since when does that happen in L.A

^ I like the funky version for FIDM. Whether people like it or not, it is sure to pique people's curiosity when they walk by. "What's in there?" It'll make sense to them when they find out it's a design school inside.

Hello erickg47,

Any inside info, perhaps something in the Alumni Newsletter as to when this thing might break ground?

Yeah, I do, too. It's looks like it could fit in the best.

From Angelenic

South Park skyline escalating overnight

by Stephen Friday on April 4, 2008

Years of ground breaking announcements, delays and deep excavation work have led up to this point in South Park’s development boom.

As 717 Olympic receives its final touches for a spring opening, rapid visual progress on three other nearby residential projects is changing the look of the neighborhood overnight.

Meruelo Maddux’s 35-story highrise is now a substantial presence on the block at a full 18 stories. Phase one of Astani Enterprise’s twin Concerto tower development is starting to catch the attention of pedestrians and motorists as it sails passed 7 levels to reach 30 by early next year.

Walking the blocks of Figueroa between 9th and Olympic these days between all the cranes, rebar and construction fencing, one can imagine what Bunker Hill was like back in the 80s and early-90s as glass and steel began to redefine the streetscape to make way for corporate offices.

Twenty years later, we’re finally getting it right.

Apparantly so. And with good reason. This thread needs to be scanned over every now and then because alot of times when posts are reported, nobody answers. Maybe that will change.

The reason why I like the one mentioned by DowntownCharlieBrown is that it resembles 717 Olympic/Hanover.
