Sephora to open Salt Lake facility, create more than 500 jobs

The warehouse, scheduled to be finished in the second half of 2008, will be 320,000 square feet . Almost all of the employees will be locally hired.

Lane Beattie is a smart guy. A Condo tower by a Theater would be a great idea and bring even more people to the downtown area.

I got this from Bill Becker today...

I e-mailed the mayor with my ideas for the cultural block. I threw in the mixed use tower idea with condos and a hotel component for the block, and the convention center across the way.

Dear Rev. Jerry Hirano (Salt Lake Buddhist Temple) and Rev. Luke Choi (Japanese Church of Christ),

These last couple of years there have been discussions of reviving the once thriving Japantown here in Salt Lake City. I am very excited about this possibility and have been thinking about if for several years. I am a resident of Salt Lake City, and a student in Urban Planning at the University of Utah. I have made a simple design plan that I think is a good solution, one that the Japanese Community, and Salt Lake Community at large, is looking for. I have included a Convention Hotel in the plan for two reasons. The first reason is so the County can get behind the project. The second is because a new Convention Hotel, if placed anywhere else, would require the demolition of older buildings (potentially historic) that give Salt Lake it's unique character. We wouldn't want a repeat of what happened in 1967. I've attached to this email a simple site plan of what could be possible. I'm not sure how involved each of you are in this process, but please look it over and give me any feedback that you have. Also, I want to know who else I should talk to about this?

That is great news Viper, now we have a skyscraper forum voice in on the Theater discussion.

I still think the best place for a convention center hotel and a new theater is either on the Utah Power Grass area across W Temple from the Salt Palace or the vacant lot west of the Historic Zions.

I could image a two tower hotel (blue outline) 1000 rooms, including a new theater. The Hotel lobby and entrance could be on either 100 S or on W. Temple and the Theater and its entrance could be on the other street, with a third mixed use office/housing or just housing tower in the green outline. The new hotel, theater and residential or commercial combined with the existing Capital and restored Pantages (film) would really fill in some gaps in Downtown, including; Convention Center Hotel, Broadway Style Theater, a thriving arts district core, and some gaps in the skyline.


Sorry the quality isn't as good as Urbanboys.

Here are some pics I took flying over the airport yesterday. Most of the recent development at the airport was focused on the new access roads, which are complete now. There was also some new ramp construction done to the west of the terminals which has also been completed.

Who knows when the airport authority will get off their butts and build the new terminal. It is needed badly. The current airport terminal is way past capacity and there are no available gates.

If you are familiar with the designs for the new terminal (whenever it gets built), you can easily see where the new concourses would be laid out.

There has also been a lot of discussion about the new cranes downtown, here are some aerial shots of that (might be hard to see them, they kinda blend in with the surroundings):

Thanks for the pics Skyguy. Have you by chance come across any of these aerial shots that show more of Pioneer Park? It's currently getting a face lift and I'd be interested to see how it looks from above now that the running track is there..

I got another e-mail from William asking for my phone number to discuss items. I am hesitant to give him my phone number because I want to think of more ideas. But, I guess I can always present those ideas later, as well.

I'll try to keep your comments and concerns in mind as I throw together some exhibits.

Here's what I know about the "Airport Expansion"


Here is a outline of what I think the new airport with the layout over the old could look like. Since I work at the airport I do hear alot of rumors of the Expansion. So here is a layout of what I know and what some of these rumors are.

Red: Shows where the new concourse/gates could go. My understanding is there could be two or three concourse with a underground subway to connect them all. Notice on the far left side where the dirt is. Looks like crews have already cleared out that area.

Blue: Blue shows where the Rent-a-cars lots are right now. Alamo, Dollar, Hurtz, ect. These lots will be clear out to make way for the new airport. The new rent-a-car lots will go in the big field right at the entice of the airport. ( Not show in Pic )

Green: Shows were the 4 level parking garage is now. That will also come down to make way for the new airport.

Light Blue: Shows where the new terminals will be. My understanding is there will be three terminals just like what we have now.

Black: Shows where the new road to the entice of the terminals will be. Pick-ups/Drop-offs.

Yellow: Show where the Trax line could go. I know there will be a Trax line and stop somewhere in that area.

Purple: Shows where the new parking garage will go. It will be bigger then the one we have now. Not sure how tall.


So that is what I know. Not sure when all of this is going to start. If anyone knows more feel free to add to this.

Thanks for the photos Skyguy, there quite impressive.

Also I noticed that the new intermodal hub TRAX line is very visable in this photo, looks like it's almost completed. I wounder how much longer t'll it opens, I thought I heard it was suposed to open next month, but that was a while ago so I don't know if it's still true.

Hey Projects, The new Sephora distribution center will be at 6075 West and 300 South. In addition to the JC Penney in-house stores, I imagine will see a few free-standing boutiques open up in places like CCC and The Cottonwood.

Hey Urbanboy, I just wanted to also put my two cents in on your ideas for Japantown. I made a special effort today to tour that area, and I think you're goals for that neighborhood are one of the most needed and worthy projects that could be accomplished right now in downtown. I hope your passion on this remains strong, and that many others will catch your vision. Nothing has more potential than that 1st south corridor between the Delta Center and the Palace.
