I want the PRT equivalent of moving sidewalks. Through security, through Starbucks, on to the plane and into my seat. Essentially, I don't want to have to use my legs after I enter the airport.

I jest. But moving sidewalks... that's too 'big city airport' for us!

I'd wonder if YEG's ever going to have moving sidewalks? It's a possibility with the big hammerhead expansion.

/\ Especially if security is still located in Central Hall - that is quite the walk if your departure gate is at the tip of the hammerhead.

Im wondering if we will see some detailed designs any time soon (or if we will see any at all...)

Facing due south to shoot the heart out of YYC's plans for total Alberta sky domination...

Actually, I think the due south design may allow for adding more gates overall than curving the terminal to the east.

My thoughts on this design are

1.The curvature of the hamerhead may impact design options for future growth SE and bordering the roadway - this being the only logical growth potential which would not to encroach onto aprons and runways
2. While the new plan does allow for phasing in of the actual hammerhead as a second phase - when you count of the gates lost (existing US gates) to what will be gained in phase 1 (without constructing the actual hammerhead) - the gains are what? 6? 4? But at what cost $$$. If they could add 6 elsewhere without the loss of existing gates this might save some pretty big bucks.....money that could be redirected to other needs.

We can debate gate numbers, however...

1) the new internal logistics will make turnaround times for aircraft faster, choice easier for incoming aircraft, and remove "these are AC gates" style restrictions.

2) for anyone lamenting the growth that could go North or NE, look at the site map again. See what needs to be removed from the NE side, and see what needs to be just paved over and built upon to the SE. Makes the choice (and the better allocation of funds) a pretty easy choice.

3) for future expansions, don't worry. Those are contemplated. You'd be surprised where they are thinking next.

What are they thinking long term? Like way out there. Is this current building going to work in 30 years? If so, how else can it be expanded? Do you think there is future potential to 'T' due west from where the new south expansion meets the existing?

EDIT:

Doubt we'd get a moving sidewalk. My guess is that half of the hammerhead will be post-clearance US gates, and the other half will be on the domestic side. Perhaps a moving sidewalk on the domestic side, but the post-clearance side will not be as far a walk.

So they are building the hammerhead first? Then shuttle by bus or something?

I see addition # 2 on there as well.

those C2E drawings are some options. As for the "how do they connect the hammerhead and the corridor", anyone remember how they connected the then "south terminal" to the "north terminal" when they were still working on teh central hall?

Yup, a nice plywood corridor.

look for more of the same IMO.

Airport taxi drivers talking to Teamsters Union
Susan Ruttan, edmontonjournal.com
Published: 3:36 pm
EDMONTON - The upstart Airport Taxi Service that has angered Edmonton-based cabbies is now embroiled in troubles with its own drivers.

Driver Abdul Aziz Nur said today that drivers are meeting with the Teamsters Union to voice grievances about management at the Nisku-based taxi company. Some drivers are signing union cards, he said.

"Management has too much power over the drivers," Nur said. He said the company was making too much money and the drivers not enough.

Font:****Company general manager Rob Sterr said he's aware some drivers are unhappy. Asked about the possibility of Teamsters involvement, he said the company views its drivers as sub-contractors, not employees.

Airport Taxi Service drivers mainly own their own cars, he said. They pay a weekly fee to the company for dispatch service; the company doesn't pay them.

Airport Taxi was created to compete for the lucrative Edmonton International Airport taxi contract, which it won in the fall of 2006, taking it away from Yellow Taxi. Because it's located outside city boundaries, its drivers don't need an Edmonton taxi licence.

In theory they just carry passengers from the airport into the city. However, other cabbies accuse the Airport drivers of picking up fares within city limits.
