I think the Mexicana announcement is great news. We need more announcements like that. Specifically, it does not seem unreasonable to me that if you are servicing the Alberta market it makes sense to split a weekly flight arrangement between Edmonton and Calgary. Having 4 flights from Calgary and three from Edmonton per week to Mexico City should work well. This kind of arrangement was around many many years ago and is not new.

And for all those who do not think this announcement is great...just think...it could have been an announcement adding all daily flights from Calgary instead...

And now it is time for LH to do the same from FRA...

YEG still needs bigger equipment and mainline service along with:

-Houston/Dallas
-Frankfurt
-Miami/ATL/NYC - 1 of the 3

anything else is icing.

I think your misunderstanding the reaction. We were expecting an announcement that would make YCC stand up and take notice. I take it that this is still yet to come, just some miscommunication about what to expect today. I was under the impression we would see a few announcements.

The Mexicana news is great but I am concerned about the long term viability of this service. They are not apart of STAR so how are people going to connect on this flight. Does YEG have enough demand to fill the seats as Calgary and Vancouver already have their own flight. Do they have any code sharing agreements with AC?

Mexicana isn't Star, but it could benefit from connections on smaller airlines, as well as a very very very healthy sunseeker market.

Launching a new service is not "oh look, we have a plane, let's fly to Inuvik", but a long process of detialed negotiations and business justification.

After all, how do you make a million dollars in the aviation industry...spend 2.

Mexicana will do well based on the number of Mexican tourists who head to Alberta on a yearly basis, plus the connections through Mexico city to the rest of mexico and S.america for that matter are great.

I will use this flight in April enroute to Cancun, and again in November.

Dont forget AeroMexico has operated charters to YEG for the past few summers for Mexican tourist's who believe it or not really like Edmonton and the surrounding area.

More to come...

But maybe I will just stop saying anything, heaven forbid we get more really good developments.

Frankly, I would like to see routes that will not be used by so much by Edmontonians. For example any city on the east coast, has to transfer somewhere to get to china. that might as well be edmonton. again, i think if a chinese airline is coming here for cargo, they can also come here for passenger. we would need to beef up our airside services

You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. I will try and learn from your example and behave myself in the Calgary thread and be more mature!

Actually you should come over there and break up the fights that seem to occur more frequently between certain members there(not myself, I sit back and laugh watching).

Agreed. Just watch the YUL'ers and YYC'ers go at it over there, especially when it comes to the 3rd busiest airport in Canada. Team YYZ always jumps in as well. Lively and at times interesting debates.

and visit Mexico City and love it. I am thrilled with this announcement!!!!!!!!! More more!!!

This announcement about the flights to Mexico city is awesome news!!!

@Tuffy and @Edmonchuk you guys are right on and I cant wait to hear the rest of the news at it comes out. From what I hear, it is going to be an asian carrier and i think they wanted to announce earlier but trouble back home in China with weather conditions and a terrible start to the new year may have put their timing off. Ofcourse this is all rumours.

I am going to use the new Mexican airline to go to Brazil for Carnival, Rio here I come!!

Air Canada owner approached on U.S. consolidation

TORONTO (CNS) -The head of ACE Aviation Holdings Inc., the parent company of Air Canada, says he has been approached by private equity players and pension funds to potentially include Canada's largest carrier in the current round of U.S. airline consolidation.

"We have now been approached by private equity, by pension funds," Robert Milton, ACE chief executive, said in a conference call today.

Font:****Milton said as a round of consolidation is expected in the United States, it is not inconceivable that Air Canada could be part of it, and that there has been dialogue to that extent.

Air Canada B-class shares shot up nearly 10 per cent in early morning trading to $9.92 on the news. Its A-class shares, which rose nearly 18 per cent in Thursday trading, gained three per cent to the same share prices as the B-class.

Delta Air Lines has entered into serious merger discussions with Northwest Airlines, forcing the hand of Continental Airlines and United Airlines parent company, UAL Corp., to enter into discussions of their own.

"In my view, as I watch the U.S. airlines scurrying around to merge, anybody that actually ties up with Air Canada gets a unique piece of geography," Milton said. "I think it would make a lot of sense for a U.S. airline to look to Air Canada."

There is, however, a 25-per-cent foreign ownership limit on the Air Canada, and the board would have to be controlled by Canadians. This means that any U.S. airline interested in merging with Air Canada would have to have a Canadian player involved.

Milton said ACE had not been in the discussions with the Canadian government to relax the foreign ownership restrictions on Air Canada. "I think that there is plenty of money in Canada," he said.

Private equity player Onyx Corp. said it had no comment this morning about whether it was in talks with ACE about buying a piece of Air Canada.

ACE has been in the process of unwinding itself, substantially reducing its ownership stake in its frequent flyer Aeroplan, its regional carrier Jazz, and its maintenance unit ACTS. However, it still holds a 75-per-cent ownership stake in Air Canada.

Part of the problem in selling off its share in Air Canada is that the stock price has been lagging, along with stock prices of other major U.S. airlines, with high fuel prices and weakening North American economy casting clouds over their 2008 outlook.

"Part of what I'm hoping, again, will happen here is that people will recognize the fundamental operating performance of the airline, at these levels we obviously are going to keep our options open," Milton said
