See that doesn't really work for me since I live on the westside of the Valley and we don't have Trax lines here yet. Maybe one day we will. Of course I could take the Bus from West Jordan up to the Airport where I work. But I would have to get on three different buses and at each bus stop I would to wait 15-20 mins for the next bus, So getting to work that way would take me over an hour Vs only 20 mins by car. This is way most of us drives car cus our bus routs sucks.
This is why we need more transportation. Like having Trax lines to West Jordan and the Airport.
But I guess rich people like you have nothing to worry about. Rent and gas can go up as high as it can and you won't lose any sleep over it. But guess what?...I'm poor so I'm going to worry about it.

there's a side of me that wishes petrol prices would skyrocket to 6 or 7 dollars per gallon just so cities will wake up and start investing in public transportation sooner... many other places of the world have done so.. and its efficient, effective, and is its own controller of sprawl and growth managment... building sprawling subdivisions wouldn't seem so appealing anymore... americans and more typically western americans value their land and space.. but reality is... the space is shrinking fast and the resources to support the sprawl are shrinking as well...
I hope salt lake gets their trax lines up sooner than later.. to connect the whole valley.. would do wonders... I mean I remember being down there 10 years ago... and recently... its like night and day for mobility... look what what its done for transport already? then imagine the possibilities...

A building in downtown Salt Lake is on fire. It's located at 100 South and West Temple in a building that used to house "Club DV8". We have a reporter on scene and will bring you more information on Eyewitness News at 10.

A 4 alarm fire has broken out at club DV8 at 100 South, West Temple in downtown Salt Lake City.

Fire crews are at the scene now. The fire has gotten so large that the Fire Department is pulling out crews. Deputy Chief Daniel Andrus of the fire department says that the building is collapsing and that it is at a total loss.

Currently the goal of the Fire Department is to simply contain the fire so that it does not burn surrounding buildings.

DV8 is a nightclub and music venue. There was not a concert scheduled tonight but there were multiple 911 calls so we do believe that people may be inside.

There are no reports of injuries thus far.

Stay tuned for details as the story develops.

This fire might accelerate development of that corner. The building will probably have to be demolished. I wonder if this was an accident. Maybe the debate has gone on too long for somebody: should we preserve architecturally signifant buildings or build something new. It's too bad about the loss of this building, but it is a prime location for a highrise hotel. Maybe they can incorporate the facade into the design of the hotel.

I was just thinking the same thing. Is the building lost? If the building is lost then the city might as well put that 1,000+ room hotel right there on that spot.

I drove by the building this morning on my way to work and I do not see how that building could be rebuilt in its current state. It appears, to me as an unprofessional, to be a complete loss.

I still can't believe that the SLCFD was able to keep surrounding buildings from being damaged. I could see the flames from my house downtown last night.

sounds like we're all on the same page on this one. Sounds suspicious, too bad it happened, but maybe it will accelerate plans on that block, that is of course if it really was an accident and no one ends up in federal prison for arson and insurance fraud.

City building service employees using a back hoe were scheduled to knock down the building at 115 S. West Temple before noon Thursday. The nearby crews at the crossroads mall were diverted for awhile to help with the demolition of the old club dv8

Club DV8 holds so much music history for Salt Lake City. So many famous bands performed there before they were big- Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Weezer, etc. etc. I am sure the list could go on and on. Also, wasn't X-96 in that building?

Am I dating myself?

X-96 is in Trolley Corners just across the street from Trolley Square.

Yes you are dating yourself but I remember when all those bands played at DV8 also. You are close to correct on the X-96 part, before Simmons Broadcasting purchased X-96 and then before they consolidated all there stations at Trolley Corner X-96 was actually in the white building just to the south of the DV8 building. That is were X-96 was started as an independent station. That was back in the Club X at The Vortex era, and don't go trying to correct me on this saying that X-96 was in Trolley Corner long before The Vortex was around. Remember Phx and I are old schooler and when I refer to The Vortex I am referring to the one and only Original Vortex in Exchange Place. Wow what a den of iniquity that place was, for you youngins you really missed out on a great NY/LA style industrial music club.

Thank you! I though it was there. I vaguely remember picking up my Depeche Mode "Violator" cassette tape I won off the radio. Admittedly, I was too young to attend any of the concerts at DV8, but always wanted to go.

I only made it to the Vortex once or twice, although I often went to Exchange Place to get the male prostitutes to buy alcohol for my friends and me. They seemed a bit more reliable than the local bums. I was a bit of a club kid and found the Vortex too "frat-boy-ish" at the time.

Anyway, sorry to get off-topic, but I am dissappointed to hear that DV8 is dead.

I heard on KUTV last night that the owner had no insurance on the building, so if this was some kind of insurance fraud scheme, it was a pretty stupid one.

Since the building is not salvageable, it would be great if they could rework the corner one-story with an off-set of several stories above it, in the same style, and replace the demolished building to the side with exactly the same architectural flow. Also would like to see some good show-window space, appropriate to the structural era on that corner of 1st and West Temple.
