I really like the cottonwood project. Yeah, it is faux european, but who cares? It looks a hell of a lot nicer than what was previously there and what they potentially might have put there (Walmart strip mall for example).

The designs for the cottonwood mall project look pretty authentic to me... the buildings are modern european so I don't see how it could be very hard for us to build it out of the exact same materials they do in europe. The only real difference is it will be new... maybe we should make some of the buildings lop-sided and lean into the street if we really want to go for that old european flair

I like the plans for the cottonwoood development, I think it will be a nice addition to the metro. However I also wish we had an architectural style to call our own.
I would like to see more buildings in slc that compliment the landscape here.
I have seen pictures of homes built in St. George that do just that.
SLC is sandwiched between the wasatch mountins and the Great Basin. We could go for a style that would compliment eather one or the deserts of southern Utah.

Interesting and excellent point RC14. At first I thought, "how is it possible to come up with a style that hasn't already been used architecturally." But then I thought about the Gehry Project and how he has explained his design as 'Utah inspired.' Perhaps, as unique as Gehry is, he will give us something very unique to Utah or at least the region.

a small update on the courthouse i received.....

The latest on the courthouse project is as follows: Odd Fellows Hall is set to be moved sometime this summer across the street; the GSA is finalizing the design of the new courthouse as we speak and will begin construction as we understand by the end of the year; and as has been the case for several years now, the Shubrick Building will be demolished. It is substantially larger that Odd Fellows and therefore is not within budget to be moved for this project. Once the new courthouse is completed, the historic Moss Courthouse will then be restored and continued to be used for federal courts as well.

while there's most projects I'm all for. I hate the idea that the Shubrick Building will be demolished for that ugly cube court house building. Now that is a building worth saving.

A lot has been said and many good points brought up about building something that replicates the classics. I'm very much against the demolition of the Shubrick. This demolition makes me even more anxious to see buildings constructed in the style of Gateway Six. I don't know how Gateway Six will ultimately be finished, but I do know that it is possible to build a classic with all of the modern ammenities, and finish the exterior with the authentic look of real craftsmanship. There are many companies today, which produce materials with the same level of appeal as the originals.

I would like to shed some light on the Shubrick building demo:

FYI: the owner of the Shubrick building didn't care too much to keep the building. I'm not exactly sure what transpired, but I believe it was something like the feds found out they needed more room than they thought and it was conflicting with the Shubrick building. Instead of a partial demolition, the owner of the Shubrick building decided to let it all get knocked down.

The feds probably could have designed around the Shubrick building, but the owner decided to let them knock it down.

Is the owner of the building the same as the owner of Port o Call? And do you know if they plan on opening a new bar at another location? I sort of grudgingly like the Port now. I hope they don't close it before november so I can get full use of my year-long membership.

I have to agree, Port is one of the best clubs in the city. I has something for everyone, by everyone I mean those that would step foot into a bar in the first place. It really will be a shame to see it go away, from the building it self to the club, I think both are a integral part of what makes the city what it is.

I really wish I had the money to buy the building and to talk Earl into allowing me to move it across the street. While it wouldn't be the same it would be pretty darn close.

I moved the Odd Fellows across Market St and moved and rotate the Shubrick across 400 S, as well as added the new courthouse to the block, (size and brightness were added for dramatic effect)


Would Earl Really miss those 30 or so parking spots, and I'm sure he could just build around it whenever he decided to develop that block.

That would be one more place I would never go, but something tells me Tom Dolan wouldn't try to get a bar to relocate to his suburban utopia.

speaking of Sandy I got a E-mail from the city today about some of their projects.



Thank you for your question regarding the potential "high-rise" project
and possible development around the ReAL Stadium.

The "high-rise" project is actually an existing project located across
the street from City Hall. The project has stood dormant for a few
years, but has recently been purchased. The new owner has approached the
City with a conceptual idea of building a mixed use project that would
include, office, retail and high-rise buildings of office and
residential. The new owner also indicated to the City his desire to locate a
broadway style theater concept as an entertainment function for the
development. At this point, the owner is in the process of analyzing
engineering and construction aspects of the property, as well as marketing
characteristics to determine square footage and the right mix of uses. To
date, there has not been any formal application submitted nor detailed
conceptual elevations for the property.

In terms of property around the RSL Stadium, the City envisions a mix
entertainment, office and residential uses. No applications nor plans
for property surrounding the stadium has been submitted to the City to
date.



So who knows these projects might not even happen. But I just thought I would share this update with you all.

See now from my point of view this isn't good news. Average Rent now is $771? Rent is starting to get way too high here. A lot of people can't afford to pay that much rent.
And I'm afraid with all the for closers going on in the housing market right now it's just forcing people back into living in apartment so therefor there will be a even bigger shortage on apartments so then rent will go even higher then it is now.

You and others, could start using a different mode of transportation, then put the money you would have spent on gas and auto upkeep, towards rent.

The apartment that I am currently in is raising the rent from $575 to $750 each month. The average rent that I have found is closer to $700. This is along transit lines too.

I am moving when my lease is up next month. I will be moving closer to work and also closer to transit to give myself and my wife more options with transportation.

I do hope that with the low number of vacancies in the SLC area that a developer will build a highrise rental apartment in DT SLC. A good 30+ story rental building would do good in this market I think.
