So they just reconfigured some holes then?

Edit: The course didn't really change much, if at all (I can't find any changes).

Well actually Saskatoon will have 1 less golf course. The city club is going down to 18 holes, but it will be a kick ass facility with practice holes and a real driving range, as you can see outlined in the image. I am excited for it. This will be a world class golf facility when it is complete. too bad we can only use it 5 months of the year.

Photos from November 24th, 2006 show the Remai property potential with Grand Trunk Bridge (or CN Railway Bridge), Diefenbaker Hill and Park, Marquis Downs (blue/green building in the distance, horse racing) and Prairieland Park, and future south bridge crossing.

I think I'll try to get out to the landfill with my camera again. This time around I have even better zoom capability so it should provide some interesting perspectives (I am hoping).

Construction at Vet College Faces Challenges
Friday, 18 January 2008
More than a year behind schedule and almost 13 million dollars more than originally budgeted for.

Thats the reality facing the Western College of Veterinary Medicine as they expand and renovate - a process that was supposed to be complete next month at a cost of 57 million dollars. It is now slated for completion in the summer of 2009.

The Associate Vice President of Facilities Management is Colin (cole-in) Tennent who says the construction boom in Saskatoon and on campus as well as the tight market place have both had a significant impact on the project.

The college is building a 2 storey addition to the teaching hospital, a research animal housing unit, additional labs and improved diagnostic service areas. (vmf 01/18/08)

Sorry to dredge this up again, but I didn't see the response till now. I know that realistically, they would be tempted to make money in whatever way they can, but as a purveyor of the news, particularly as the only daily in Saskatoon they have an ethical obligation to be forthright and label advertising as such. How do we trust that any "news" has not been paid for if they don't differentiate between reporting and advertising? The media is not "just another business" and they have responabilities above and beyond other bussinesses. That is why we have special licensing for them. I know this is purely hypothetical.

A little long winded, but what else is there to do?

I agree, and in most cases they do (auto dealership article appeared in the business section...business=attempting to sell a product, service, lifestyle, or industry).

But, for the Star Phoenix (or any news operation) to begin making claims about their articles, stating "this article is attempting to sell suburban lifestyles", or "this vehicle review is attempting to sell you the Mercedes brand"...well, IMO, its open to interpretation what their articles are attempting to sell or not sell.

The reader must decide for themselves what the article means to them. Psych1 may take offense to the "thinly veiled marketing" of the automotive or home review sections of the newspaper, but Carl the consumer might be looking to purchase a new car, or home. Carl found the review articles helpful and supportive and hopes the Star Phoenix publishes more review articles of products and services available to him in his community.

Articles are written to have multiple effects, or are attempting to influence many divergent interests and sometimes it is not known who might be influenced and to what extent any one person might be influenced by the " thinly veiled marketing" of an article. Carl finds the "thinly veiled marketing" useful, while Psych1 finds the whole attempt offensive...divergent interests I suppose

That's the thing, trust can be granted and trust can be broken. Whether we wish to trust news is entirely up to us, the reader. You or I can stop reading the Star Phoenix and begin subscribing to other sources of news including Planet S, The Sheaf, internet blogs/news, SSP/forums, and word of mouth to supplement whatever the Star Phoenix publishes.

Then again, many people don't have the time to read and synthesize the variety of local information sources, and rely on the mainstay Star Phoenix for in-depth local coverage.

The Star-Phoenix does a great job IMO. Sure there is the occasional "thinly veiled marketing" article, but then again, what publisher doesn't have some "thinly veiled marketing" attempt (intentional or otherwise)?

It seems like your offended more by what the "thinly veiled marketing" is trying to sell you rather than the act of "thinly veiled marketing"...if an article had a different viewpoint, perhaps a more anti-auto, anti-suburban angle you may feel the article is worth the paper it is written on, as opposed to the free or paid advertisement related to the luxury automotive segment or suburban home building segment.

Special licensing for media outlets mean very little to me. It is but one credential and a very minor one at that. Basing a media operators credibility on their special licensing has less to do with the intentions of their articles and viewpoints, and more to do with conforming to minimal standards set by some government and industry representative body.

There are bloggers, there are people living in our community that have just as much, if not more credibility than any of the major news outlets, and I don't believe special licensing is required for them to publish their viewpoint. Independent news sources have a huge following and continue to provide credibility through the text they type and print, supported by the reader's trust.

The relationship between reader and publisher is one based on trust and support. Readers expect a certain level and detail in the articles published, and the publishers expects a certain number of businesses or service providers to be bidding for advertisement. Businesses pay publishers for the advertisements, readers pay businesses for products and services, publishers report the issues confronting their readers (sometimes this includes reports on lifestyle choices including auto reviews and home reviews), and at the end of the day we all feel like we are part of something

Hi..This is my first post here, so forgive me if I'm off topic. Does anyone know anything about the Renaissance condo tower? I've been given an opportunity to buy a unit in it that has had absolutely no renovations since it was built and they are wanting well over $550,000 for it. Any thoughts on the building itself or how it compares to anything else in the city? Thanks!

For 550k I'd rather live in the Rumley, but that's more my style. The neighbourhood around the Renaissance is great (better than the Warehouse district), but the building is older and from what I've seen of the interiors (pictures on mls), un-renovated units are very 80s. You could move in right away though (if that's your plan); you'll have to wait a while for something like the Rumley (or King George).

True, you can't beat the location of the Rennaisance, but that still seems a bit over priced (even for Saskatoon's improving? booming real estate market) I would say if reno's had been completed that would be more in line. You don't say how many sq ft you are talking about as that makes a difference to.

Just as a comparison, the RiverFront condos on Spadina (brand new within the year) you can get a unit in the $400-450k range. Still a good location and you are getting new.

Also cool new lofts in Eaton's buidling on Ave D (you loose location here) are selling in the high $300k ot low $400k. These are big units, with big balconies and very high ceilings. Depends on taste and wants.

Just to compare with another unit in the same building, here's a link to a 1,206 sq. ft. unit in the Renaissance that just sold:
http://homes.point2.com/CA/Saskatchewan/...siness-District/1309205-Real-Estate.aspx

It's asking price was $445 000 and it appears to be newly renovated with an amazing view.

How does your unit compare in terms of view, square footage? Since there have been no renos done on your unit in question is the 550k asking price justified when comparing it to the unit above?

Thanks for the link - the one I'm looking at is 1355 sq. feet, but definitely not as nice...the views are about the same. Now if only I knew how much it would cost to renovate to that style...

Does anyone have any idea what the new condos with a river view will sell for...this is such a hard decision! Yikes.

the Renaissance does have the views and the location, its on spadina and it has views of the bess, downtown, broadway, and bridges. you are a short walkaway from broadway, neat shopping street. i think it is saskatoons tallest too

but if you want something neat like said before i would go for the warehouse district, bad part it is just in the beginning in it development phase

rumely currently undergoing a reno

The Renaissance floor count is 24.

I believe that Hallmark Place is in fact Saskatoon's tallest with 27 floors. Along with that death ray antenna on the roof the Hallmark does rise higher than the Renaissance.
