Archeologist oversees LRT construction re-start

EDMONTON - Excavation work on the south LRT line will resume later this week, but with an archeologist on hand to check for human remains.

A city backhoe digging a trench at 43rd Avenue and 111th Street hit a casket last Friday about 1.5 metres below the surface, said Wayne Mandryk, the city's manager of transit projects, in an interview.

The human remains in the casket have been turned over to the chief medical examiner for examination, said Mandryk. When the excavation resumes, an archeologist will be on site to examine the ground around where the casket was found, in case other bodies are buried there.

Mandryk said provincial officials are researching the area, to try to determine who might have been buried there.

There was a shoe along with the bones in the casket, he said.

The city is extending its light rail transit line south along 111th Street to Century Park at 23rd Avenue.

it's almost hard to believe something like this was not uncovered during construction of 111st 30+ years ago. It's actually pretty cool to think that something like this, that might have some sort of significant history, can be found in the strangest of places and makes you wonder what else is out there.

Where I grew up in Twin Brooks there was lots of cool stuff in the ravine. There was a train bridge at one time a mere 100m from where my parents house sits now. There was also a house foundation in the ravine near McTaggart bird sanctuary and the remains of an old blast site of some regard down there too.

There is a lot of cool stuff in our ravines and river valleys, never mind buried in the front yard.

I'd like to check it out... I've been all over the river valley on my cyclocross bike & I've never seen that!

When we were digging our couleewalk in our front yard, we found pot shards that were elaborately painted. We figure that the pot dated back to the 50's - to just before our house was built. We managed to reconstruct a quarter of the pot.

I'd like to rub in the fact that it was +13 here yesterday! The 3 feet of snow we had a Christmas time is no existent, and it's all green grass and open water now. (Why doesn't the grass go brown here???)
