It seems that pic has become pretty popular. It's been making the rounds on a few threads now, on both SSP and SSC.

Phil, I'm quite sure it takes more than a few weeks for occupancy once the building is topped out. Looking at the Shangri-La, it'll be really topped out pretty soon (clearly still need to finish mechanical penthouse etc). After that it'll take awhile for the exterior/glass to be finished putting up and then they have to do all the interior stuff like electrical/plumbing/ventilation/painting/flooring/furnishing etc. I'm sure they've started on some of these things towards the bottom of the tower but as you can see the upper floors are looking pretty bare. I'd imagine it takes awhile to do that, especially for such a large tower. I don't know if it takes a year (I'd imagine time would vary for the size of the tower), but several months seems realistic to me. Bentall V was topped out for months and months before they even finished putting up all the glass. And don't get me started on the Grace. It's been topped out for like a year and I don't think it's occupied yet.

It didn't get that nickname just because of all the Asians that live there.

Just because a build has been topped off doesn't mean interiors are completed, which in a residential tower can take ages. Just look at Grace (has that dandy thing finally been completed yet?)

As far as the picture goes, it needs to be enlarged heavily (for desktop uses), and blown up substantially for marketing purposes (Olympics, anyone?). Put big bold letter up top "This is Vancouver." Would make quite an impression worldwide. remember, it was the aerial Sydney Harbour shot that made it famous, this could be another big break for Vancouver with the right kind of promotion.

Basically that's it as Canadian Mind put it. Once it is topped off and then sealed up, it is usulally said that it takes a year for the interior work to be completed. Judging by the high standards that Shangri-La has, I would bet that they wouldn't open the hotel until all the work on the higher floors are complete (they wouldn't want deliveries of washing machines etc coming in while guests are at the propoerty.)

At this point, I am going to officially predict a December 01, 2008 opening for the hotel. Anyone else care to officially guess?

it would be so cool if they could attach giant Olympic rings on all three sides at the top during the Olympics, and they'll be lit up at night.

^Yeah, I almost forgot about that. Didn't he say awhile ago he was surprised nothing has been publicly mentioned about it yet? And I think that was at least a couple months ago he said that. I guess they want to surprise us at the last minute.

Original opening is set for Sept 2008...bu I am guessing for December 01 2008

If I recall correctly, it was originally supposed to be topped out in August '07 so it would appear that it is at least 4 months behind. Interestingly, if the original opening date was Sept '08 then that would make a little over a year between topping out and opening. Or probably a year exactly between being 'sealed up' and opening.

Based on current trends, it probably won't be fully topped and sealed until January, unless they can pull all that off in less than 3 weeks. If they don't pick up the pace, occupancy might not occur until early 2009.

...before the surprise can 'function', I'm sure. But they could always tell us ahead of time.

As great as that orange sunset skyline shot is, i think it would be even better if the city waited for Shangri-La and Ritz-Carlton to finish before using it as the ultimate Vancouver promotion tool. If this picture could be reproduced with those two skyscrapers in it, the city could even get a little cocky then and say something like, "Vancouver-what Hong Kong wants to be!"

If i ever see such a thing i want a kickback, but all i'll get is probably a kick.

Apart from the strong family ties, I'm not sure Vancouver registers much on the HK consciousness -- and certainly not as it did in the 90s.

Looks like they were working on a new floor today, to it's definitely not topped out yet, but this could be it...they haven't done much in terms of glass for the last few weeks, i can't imagine they get this whole thing closed in till the end of january...and as for the fins, well we all know how long the roof on bentall 5 took.
