This mansion has been under construction for more then a few years, I think the owner just keeps adding on. The really sad part is that every chapel visitor has to drive by it, see it on the way into church and every neighbor has to see it as it is on top of a hill.

I saw a bunch of mansions this size in Cave Creek, Carefree and northern Scottsdale, but this one in Sedona looks like something the mob would build. Most are in the 25 million dollar price range.

Don, a McMansion is a very large semi-luxury home, for the undiscriminating unwashed "new money" who think more is, in short, more. Conspicuous consumption, and all that. This home is a real mansion in every sense of the word, albeit a very ugly one.

Sedona tends to attempt to limit the ability of the wealthy few to spoil the view of everyone else; it's sad they failed so miserably in this case.
No Arizona city (Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Sedona, Fountain Hills, Cave Creek) is as populist as California in their protection of their greatest asset with the beach access laws, but Arizona cities don't have the advantage of state laws to boost their efforts.

Heh small world...

Just at dinner last night, my sister and her boyfriend were telling me they were in Sedona over the weekend and went to the mansion. My sister's boyfriend personally knows the guy, which I guess is Romanian and owns a pharmaceutical company and has 40+ patents. He was offered $30 Million for the house and did not want to sell it.

30 mil? Maybe it's really nice inside... I'd pay that, so I could tear it down and build something designed by an architect, rather than by a 13-year-old girl.

good job finding the Victorian home in Phoenix! I also love the gardens with native desert plants, so exotic looking to my Canadian eyes.

In this day and age nobody should be building such a ridiculous house. That's what I hate about Sedona... it was a beautiful place ruined by man with big ugly houses and strip malls. That house probably uses more energy than a small impoverished country.

Nice scenery! From what I've seen on this forum Pheonix's highrise architecture is dull and severely lacking, yet it's lowrise buidings are stunning and unique. Interesting juxstaposition.

I totally agree, not sure if there was a land grab or why exactly some of these areas are not state parks. I like Andrew's idea, buy it to bulldoze it!

44 Monroe will be the first real appealing highrise Phoenix has seen in while. However, given the growth in the population and the variety where people are coming from, it is just a matter of time before they change their height restrictions and see some significant building downtown. It is almost emminent to occur and hopefully the tall structures will be as interesting and wonderful as the lower structures. The convention center, the Phoenix library and the sports areans are beautiful and if they are any indication of what is about to happen within the next 10 - 15 years, then I say build away!

I was about to ask you whether or not you went to Jerome if you were in the Sedona area, PLEASE POST THOSE PICS, that is such an awesome little ghost town.

As for Phoenix (I will be moving there this Saturday), you really got around and captured the essence of the city magnificently!
