Unique: I've always dreamed about going to the top of the Robin Hood..errrr...Horizon flour mill on 33rd street, it's one of the tallest structures in Saskatoon and would provide an interesting perspective....

i have always wanted to do that! i wonder if it would be easy or not. i assume they have lots of security. or maybe not.

ok i took some photos but circle33 beat me to the punch. Accually we went on the same say but i went on the evening instead of the morning. as for the panorama i had some troubles. the hotel senator wouldnt let me up because i am a minor even though i showed athe camera. i tried to take it in front but a homeless man scared me away wanting me to give him the camera to trade it in at a pawn shop. but any ways enjoy and i am gonna try to go again this week so more to come.

Has anyone seen the roadwork and construction going on at the end of 105th St. E., just past the McKercher Dr. overpass? The land was unused for the longest time, but now something's being built there.

drm310, I also spotted the construction last time I was on that overpass. I'm not very familiar with that overpass, would anything built there be easily accessed from College Dr.? If so it might be a service station or something like that. I wouldn't be surprised though if it's a small office park much like the building that is occupied by SIGA and FSIN nearby.

I drive by there from time to time, and it looked to me like a self-storage place.

Well the opening performance at the new Persephone Theatre is scheduled for Dec 12th....based on what I currently see at the construction site, I cannot see any possible way they can be ready! They are still doing exterior work, so how can a functioning theatre be ready in less then one months time from now? I wonder if they have a contingency plan, or if they would just delay the start of their season. Can't be easy to 're-locate' a full blown production.

Green Light For New Police Headquarters

The Board of Police Commissioners gave the thumbs up Thursday for the construction of a new 91 million dollar headquarters.

However, nothing will begin yet as the report still has to be looked at during city council capital budget discussions.

Deputy Chief Bernie Pannell says they can't afford to wait much longer as costs continue to rise.

In 2002 it was 42 million to build and now in 2007 it has gone up to 91 million

Pannell says the area they are looking at near Idylwyld and 25th Street East would allow for room to grow.

The staff has almost doubled since 1977, forcing the Police Service to use 12 facilities to operate out of.

The expected completion date for the new headquarters is set for 2013.

It's apparent they need a new station...but $91 million?! Am I the only one who thinks that's absurd?? Perhaps I just don't understand the logistics of a police station.

This evening I drove past the Campbell Millar Wilson Building that was restored by ICR not too long ago. The lights were on in a first floor office and the modern loft style interior looked excellent and very 'trendy'... it looked like the kind of office space that those hip young tech companies would occupy i was impressed

Condo and Townhouse Sales In Saskatoon Soar

A report on townhouse and condominium sales growth shows Saskatoon leading the way in western Canada and among the top four markets in Canada.

The Re/Max Condo Report shows a thirst for condo and townhouse living among young people getting into the housing market for the first time. Sales growth in Saskatoon was 33 per cent last year, while Regina had a staggering 57 per cent growth rate...second only to Kitchener-Waterloo's 59 per cent.

Saskatoon's condo market is keeping pace with the demand for single detached homes, but because of lower prices, condos and townhouse are becoming the alternative of choice for young first time buyers. Larry Stewart of Re/Max Saskatoon says prices are projected to increase again in 2008, but not at the same rate as they did this year. Stewart also says sales growth will again be in the double digit range though somewhat slower than what occurred in 2007.

to me this article seems like we are one of the best cities in canada for a new highrise condo is saskatoon. hopefully this well show some developers that we are the pertect town for them

What is the tipping point? There's several things occurring simultaneously that will eventually signal to those sitting on the fence to stop and think "Hey, we can make some $$$$ building and marketing well-designed high-rise condos in downtown Saskatoon ".

A realization of saturation of other hot markets might shift dollars, not a huge play, but still notable.

The best assurance for condo developers may in fact relate to fresh StatsCan statistics displaying continued population growth for Saskatoon, more than previous years is obviously better...record setting (smashing ) values year after year play well as a standard incentive or signal.

I know you are joking, but this really is the kind of thing which will ultimately shift the balance - a change in perception of Saskatchewan where more urbane and cosmopolitan people can be happy. As someone in one of the Alberta forums said about Edmonton, if you advertise yourself as a place where cheap people can own a suburban home, you will attract cheap people who want to own suburban homes - voila! - the current situation.

These (and I dare say the average Saskatchewan resident at present- current company excluded!) people do not buy expensive downtown condos or eat at downtown restaurants or deli's or go to downtown bars. The people who do that are on the outside looking in and what they see (correct or not) are Pilsner swilling, socially conservative, quiet living suburban/rural folks. A perception of Saskatoon as gay friendly would go a long way toward changing that. I know it is controversial, and I might get the name wrong, but there is some sort of bohemian index which rates cities on how freindly and appealing they are to young, hip urban people and one aspect of that index is gay freindliness. If you look at the trendy areas in any large city, you can bet that the proportion of gay people is higher than that in the suburbs. I am not meaning to comodify gay folks, nor to stereotype them and my apologies if I have, but I think it is really important to realize that Saskatoon and Saskatchewan better loosen up a bit, or we will always have trouble attracting and keeping young people (gay opr straight). BTW, I am not gay and actually pretty dull myself, although I don't live inthe suburbs

I was only half joking. The statement about San Francisco (any progressive city) I agree might be possible....depends how favorably critics and the masses receive the gay investigator series set in Saskatoon. Maybe it will do what the CSI series did for....

I can tell you that the whole building has been sold and that it will be filling up with tenant/owners plus leased tenants in the new year. (around may) it wont be a tech company but two highly touted businesses from saskatoon that will be moving there plus icr who is already in the building. big issue is still the lack of parking that this building can accomodate but im sure there will be room somewhere in the downtown for everyone.

Good to know that it will fill up. The restoration was a great effort by ICR.

^ ICR didn't do the resotration of the building, it was a private developer.
