Why don't more builders use colored concrete? Is it because it's hard to maintain consistency between loads over such a long timespan? I think some variation would make a building more interesting, and colored concrete would seem to me to require a lot less maintenance than painted in order to maintain a decent look.

here's the old rendering for reference:

what confuses me is that the crain's article states that the new scheme calls for a larger building, yet the old scheme was supposedly 34 floors and 900,000 sq. ft. acording to emporis, and this new design is only 31 floors with 865,000 sq. ft. according to the crain's article. sounds to me like the project was downsized, not increased.

What is that lowrise structure to the south? I figured it was part of the proposal, but it's there already in Google map.

That would be it. Same location and according to the old rendering, same architect.

Larger as in more square footage. 673,000 square feet then versus 865,000 square feet now.

it's a big cooling plant for several loop office buildings.

Count yourself lucky! I live on Huron, and when the Superior at Lasalle and the 10-story 156 W Superior were under construction, they both used piledrivers and my floor was shaking for weeks. I could sit in my living room and feel each thump.

What was Emporis' source? Article says old design was 673,000 sq. ft. Which seems more reasonable. That picture of the old design certainly doesn't look like it's close to 1m square feet. 111 South Wacker is only 1m square feet.

Cribchatter reports that 235 W VanBuren is over 60% sold, and that some companies have bought entire floors for corporate housing. I also didn't realize that the units will have exposed, unpainted concrete inside. Nice.
