Yes. The base is clad in stone, so I doubt they'll just leave the concrete bare. From the renderings it looks white.

^ Maybe he means, "Are you serious?" in the sense that the building will never look this good again - don't rush the paint job! At least, that's how I feel.

Maybe they are waiting for Behr to mix up just the perfect color of beige.

Thanks for all the shots, by the way. Personally, I get a real kick out of the base of 550 N. St. Clair, because it's starting to resemble the kitchy 1950s parking garage it replaced (ok, stretch the imagination a bit, but you get my drift).

While I'm posting, I've been meaning to note that Avenue East is turning out to be far superior than I had expected. Great architecture by no means, but the cladding on the upper sections took a decidedly modern twist after all of the PoMo, retro-looking watercolor renders. I am not embarrassed to look at it, as I feared I might be. Hugh relief.

Is The Fairbanks done yet? It's taken forever to clad that thing.

Also, has anybody heard anything about the St. Clair? We now have 550 St. Clair, 600 North Fairbanks, Parkview West, The Streeter, The Fairbanks, Avenue East, and 600 North LSD, all of which are at or nearing the end of construction (that's 7 new towers, folks!)

The only sure construction I see in the neighborhood's future is for Streeter II, since that's a rental tower. Other than that, the St. Clair and the Peshtigo are the only projects that are marketing, and who knows how their sales will go.

^ Last I heard the St. Clair was approximately 35% sold. Folks from both Centrum and DeStefano have recently mentioned that construction would actually begin late this year.

I'm very interested to see how the Peshtigo fares in this market. Very, very surprised that Related pushed so aggressively to launch it now, particularly as news came out recently that CRL has not exactly been setting the world on fire in terms of sales (granted they're not exactly in the same price point or market niche). It will also be interesting to see what is the next rental tower (after Streeter Place) to emerge in Streeterville (the only proposals that I know of are 1) the tower planned across the street from AMC (the planned rental tower to the north of the Waldorf site) and Golub's next twin-tower rental project on McClurg after CBS moves to Block 37). However, given the current condo and rental markets, it's quite possible that we could have a programmatic change in one of the existing condo proposals that are fairly far along (535 St. Clair, Parkview East tower, perhaps?)...

That's funny - I'm having just the opposite reaction as I think I'm liking the Clare more and more all the time - especially the 'rear' which is I find very interesting - a pleasant surprise....

yeah, I'm not too big on exposed concrete... I'd rather have it painted. I mean, not beige or some other boring color. But this building would look really good if they clad it in stone all the way up

I kind of liek the back of clare too...and exposed concrete is great as long as its GOOD concrete.

True. But the cost of really nice, Tadao Ando-style concrete has got to approach the price of limestone, since you need skilled craftsmen who know how to finesse the surface of the concrete.

Wait... since when are those two project "far along"? 535 St. Clair hasn't even been approved by the city yet, and Parkview East... that's the mystery building, since it's only been seen in the blurry backgrounds of Parkview West renderings. It's kinda like Bigfoot in that regard.

Even if Bertrand Goldberg's old Prentice Women's Hospital lacks the postcard-ready silhouette of his Marina City corncobs, it remains a startlingly good piece of architecture: a 7-story bed tower with four bulbous concrete shells that soar above a boxy base. It would be a shame to lose this exuberant, adventurous building, especially because it is such a powerfully sculptural antidote to the bland residential high-rises east of Michigan Avenue.

i don't like her line of reasoning at all:

The height of new buildings indicates the health of a city's economy, Chicago is not building as tall of buildings as other cities, therefore Chicago's economy is not healthy.

There are so many other things that determine the health of an economy. The article is a rather amateurish synopsis of Chicago's economic well-being. Anyone want to dispute how well London is doing right now? I don't see too many 150 story buildings over there, but i would kill to have their economic might.
