I drove passed the Huntington Condominiums over on 500 east area, i beleive. The foundation has been poured, and construction is underway.

Also, does anybody know whats going on at 800 south and 500 east roughly. Theres a parking level thats been poured of a building currently under construction. This project seems new to me. most likely its a small 3-4 story residential building.

I've thought about that myself, TRAX seems to be bringing alot of interesting developments to the area, it would be nice to see some of those sprout up west of I-15.

I always have thought it would have been better for the city to have built the convention center at the southern end of Main Street in Downtown (somewhere between 400-900 South, for a southern anchor to Main Street. Think of it, convention visitors would likely visit Temple Square, had they not been before, dramatically increasing pedestrian traffic up and down Main Street. The reason why it ended up where it did was because the land was owned by the LDS church--who wanted that land redeveloped into something more profitable... to bad for Japan Town!

...and now, my proposed location makes even more sense now that "Hotel Row" is right there. Why aren't the decisions made by the "Church" more visionary!

Instead of receiving "revelation" to tell us what sinners and abominable people we are, it would actually be helpful and productive if the "Brethren" received revelation for PRI!

Salt Palace at the South end of Main- that is an interesting idea urbanboy. Isnt that where the Salt Palace was originally? Most cities I've been to have their convention centers near the edge of downtown instead of taking up 30 acres in the heart of the city, who knows maybe this can be a plus in the future.

It was at 900 South Between State and Main.

As a frequent flyer I am stoked for TRAX to the airport but I'm a little concerned about the routing of that line, what do you guys think? 600 West or 400 West option? Personally I'm opposed to more viaducts downtown which the 600 West option would require. I mostly agree with Dave Buhler's plan to shorten the North Temple viaduct and route the airport line across. Wish Becker woulda though of that first.

It was absolutely NOT Dave Buhler's idea! It might be his plan, as well as Ralph Becker's, but it was not his idea. I was at the first public meeting where the community was able to see the two options and make comments. Shortening the North Temple viaduct to accommodate Trax is what many residence proposed. It was the community's idea.

urbanboy I stand corrected- right on to the community then! Seems like shortening the North Temple viaduct would be best for Gateway too. I guess it just depends how UTA decides to route the TRAX trains. Transfering from Front Runner it seems like 600 West would be quicker to the airport, but from all other lines 400 West seems faster. But I can't really visualise any of the TRAX trains coming downtown only to bypass the intermodal hub and head straight to the airport.

You're a good sport

Initially I supported the 600 W. alignment for this very reason (longer trip, and backtracking). However, after hearing the community's input, I changed my mind. It's just a result of bad planning. It would have (sorry about the would haves) been cool, had the Union Pacific Depot been used for the intermodal hub.

Sorry to keep questioning you UrbanBoy but I question that the LDS church owns or owned the land underneath the Salt Palace. The county assessors office lists the property Tax Class ID as County and also lists the property as Owner Occupied.

I have always questioned Boyers stupidity on the Union Pacific Depot integration into Gateway. If they would have had some vision, they would have realized that having front runner come into the lower level of the depot and spill out into Gateway that would have been so invaluable for business. I thought that they should have done that as soon as the gateway was proposed but who would listen to me at the time. Oh well Boyers loss.

I just decided today that the best view of the SLC skyline is from the very top of the Spaghetti bowl.

Future Mayor I agree. But there is some evidence that even Boyer realized the value of commuter rail arriving at their development below grade. I think it would be cool if you could ride Front Runner into SLC and disembark at an actual train station- such as the UP or Rio Grande. In the future who knows it may be possible. I found this in an old Trib article when they were talking about moving the power substation just north of the new Gateway building on the corner of 200 S. and 500 W:

"Without moving the substation, the city couldn't finish the linear parks that sit in the middle of 500 West, nor could it build a new type of underground commuter-rail system on 500 West - a project not even on the drawing board but one that could be built decades from now."

If cash wasn't an issue it sure would be a cool way to route trains through downtown. Must have been a butt load of cash to move that substation cuz the location is so prime for the Gateway.

Wrendog, I've noticed that most of your observations are from inside your automobile. Now I do agree that the view from that angle is spectacular... I was just wondering what observations you might make should you spend a day walking around Downtown. Now I'm sure you've probably walked around downtown before, but should you choose to do it again, walk without purpose (no planned destination), explore, go only to observe and ponder about what you like and don't like, and what you might like to change. I would be interested to find out what it does to your perspective, whether it confirms it, changes it, or broadens it.

I've thought that for years. I like that angle, and the height you get from the spaghetti bowl gives you a certain perspective--basically an aerial view that you don't typically get.

And then I get in an accident.

Sorry to have to prove you wrong on this, but the LDS Church does not own the property that the Salt Palace Occupies. The County owns the property.
