Really? I would think you are more likely to get connected through YYZ or YUL, at least through AC (Star). Remember YUL has daily, scheduled direct connections to 7 continental European airports, including x2 FRA (with LH's only FC from Canada-FRA) and x6 CDG.
YYC just has the one daily scheduled flight to FRA right now, and I found that AC (Star) doesn't really route through YYC from YEG (even when flying YEG-FRA) to European destinations as a first choice, it'll send you through YYZ or YUL first. Maybe the charter (Zoom,Air Transat etc) world is different, but charter flights are pretty useless unless you have VERY flexible timeframes. They are more for packaged holidays.
I think you guys should be thankful for the increased direct connections for trans-boarder (US) and national that YEG has managed to gain over the past 10 years. Especially considering YYC is the established regional AC/WJ hub for the prairies, a fact you'll just have to deal with.
If a direct scheduled connection from the prairies to Europe is considered, YYC will be considered first as it is an established canadian regional hub. YEG would be next. YYC is far from being a canadian international hub, YVR YYZ and YUL are too firmly established - unless WJ goes international that is.
However, if you don't want to connect through YYC, don't - you are the customer. If I was flying to continental Europe from YEG, I would connect through YYZ or YUL before YYC. The upside of doing this wold be an increase in capacity/flights from YEG to YYZ and YUL. Then when you guys get to 9m+ PAX a year you'll get a direct to FRA or AMS.
That being said, YEG has to be the busiest, non-hub, airport in Canada. Oh, and I agree, the YEG-LHR route shouldn't be affected much by YYC possibly getting a x2 daily to FRA. AC already uses a smaller plane on the YYC-FRA, than say LH does on the FRA from YVR, YYZ and YUL. I would expect LH to do the same if they decide to do a daily direct from YYC-FRA.
