It does look pretty decent. I wonder if US departures will ultimately move to the north terminal once fully completed??

I sure hope that some of that 1 billion will be used to spruce up the remainder of the north terminal...they sort of started, but definately didnt finish. The baggage claim area looks terrible (compared to the south terminal) and the airside departures area isnt any special either, ahhaha! I am sure they took all of this into consideration!

$1 Bil. sure seems like a lot for this... but at our labour costs however....

So I take it the original plan went out the window?
The one that showed the south terminal heading due east, then curving down south?
What about future growth/expansion options...which direction would they build off of?
Does this mean the north expansion at the WestJet area is on hold?

I think the addition looks pretty good myself. This type of setup seemed to have been favored by many people on the SSP and C2E forums. In fact this specific expansion setup was drawn up and explained on one of the two forums.

I'm a little curious about the 18 aircraft parked around the new extension. Can that many airplanes fit or is this just an overall impression of what the extensions is going to look like.

I'm assuming that the new extension will be setup like YYZ's Terminal 3 where on one side of a dividing glass you have US departures and on the other side you have domestic departures. A glass partition down the middle of the extension/hammerhead will provide that so perhaps US departures on the north side and domestic departures on the south side.

Hopefully the link between the hammerhead and the current south terminal will be wide enough. If you look at YYC's expansion plans, much of it includes widening the links between the hammerheads and main terminal.

Anyways, thumbs up from me.

I agree - the plans look great. I am very pleased they are building for 9 pax and I bet we reach that faster than they are projecting. I particularly like the planned approach to construction where they will build the first phase away from the terminal building - allowing workers to avoid going through the airport etc. Very strategic - and indeed it will save time - hence money. As far as not raising the landing Fees - they appear to be planning to save the option to raise these for a rainy day - a good thing. I give it 4.5 kernals of popcorn out of 5.

Hopefully this means that we will get those non-stop flights to US destinations that are not coming in because there are no open slots.

My guess is that the hammer-head will have a glass separation in the middle that can be moved around to make the U.S. area larger in the a.m. and smaller throughout the rest of the day. This way some gates can function as both a.m. US departure gates and p.m. Canadian or international departure gates.

The question now is whether the U.S. pre-clearance area will remain where it is, or whether it will move further south. My guess is that it will stay where it is, and the north side of the hammer will be U.S. gates, until you reach the head, while the south will be Canadian and international gates.

Don't know what they will do about Canada Customs though.

$1 billion sure sounds like a lot for an expansion like this. I only hope it'll be worth it, especially for the north terminal. I did have to deal with the crowded 80s-era baggage claim area there as I was on a WestJet flight from Vancouver back on Tuesday, which got delayed almost 3 hours for mech reasons. At least they didn't take very long to get the baggage on the carousels!

Flying into YEG, Edmonton looked spectacular at night, and both the SW and SE portions of Anthony Henday Drive were very easily visible with all those streetlights.

They'll lose alot of gate during this construction process due to attaching the new terminal to the south terminal. Wonder how they will pull that off.

It will be closer as southwest Edmonton develops to it's city limits and i'm sure the county of Leduc is scheming, er i mean planning to develop, south of 41 Avenue SW.

The hammerhead will be built first and then it can be attached by a simple pedway. They will lose 4 or 5 gates at the most (Gates 62-70). The hammerhead and part of the link to the main terminal, from the posted picture itself, look like they can handle at least 7 or 8 gates. I don't think it'll be that big of a problem.

I like the expansion plan, but I"m wondering if this will encourage more direct flights out of Edmonton so that there will be less dependance on cities like, oh say Calgary, to connect from?

I don't think that we'll lose any gates. Once the hammerhead is finished, they will close the existing U.S. holding area, and each of those gates, temporarily, as they build the connector to the hammerhead. My guess is that once you clear U.S. Immigration, you will get on a bus ala Dulles and it will take you to the hammerhead, which will be post-clearance U.S. holding area until the connector is fully built to it.

@cold - the hotel is going to be built during the same time as the terminal expansion. This way they can tie in one contractor to complete the entire project, which could save time and money.
