I've never seen that either. I'm thinking that shot was taken with a very long lens from somewhere in West Van or even from the southern part of Bowen Island.

...found the island. Its halfway between Lighthouse Park and Bowen Island. Its part of a larger island with maybe a dozen or so other houses. Anyone know what its called ?

Im guessing downtown can be seen from Bowen Island, any known pics? But how about futher, I see Toronto pics from across the lake so is there an equal for Vancouver like on the Island ?

I used to live in Nanaimo and there was a part of Nanaimo where you could see downtown Vancouver

when you catch the ferry to Victoria you can see some of vancouver i can't remember how much of downtown is visible but i imagine a few of the gulf islands can get a nice view of the city from them

You can see downtown Vancouver from any part of the Naniamo shoreline immediately north of Gabriola Island.

I also suspect the picture of that island was taken from the Horseshoe Bay - Departure Bay Ferry, same view of downtown, but much clearer than with the naked eye.

I don't think it would make a very good picture (at least not with my camera) and a person would need a very clear high noon, without any wind, otherwise the glare will mess up the shot. The reason for no wind is so that the water will be relatively smooth, allowing the light to actually curve over it.

That, and it is bloody murder to get up onto a good vantage point... you do need a bit of elevation, even with the light curve to see all of downtown. Otherwise it gets eaten up by the horizon monster.

I'd suggest the mountains to the west of highway 19 just south of Nanoose bay. But it would be a lucky shot at best, as you are placing yourself even further from Downtown Van. The other factor to take into consideration is that the UBC endowment lands are in the way, hence why I say go immediately north of Gabriola Island. You want to avoid the University lands, but you can't distance yourself to much either (remember that Vancouver Island goes very sharply to the northwest, especially this portion).

If you want the most direct Vantage point, it would probably be the "mountains" (it's an 800 foot mole hill) on the far side of Nanoose bay. There is nothing but water between you and downtown, but now you are almost 65 kilometers from downtown. As such I'd try to get closer and risk getting UBC in the way.

If you want the absolute clearest shot though dude, take the 11:30 boat (or closest thing to it) from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, And start firing the pictures off as soon as you see downtown (10-20 minutes into the ferry ride). You are still far enough away to get everything you want in the photo's, but close enough that even I can get a reasonable shot of downtown with my piece of shit camera. Plus there is alot less risk of not getting a good shot involved.

Does anyone have photos showing the evolution of downtown Vancouver from various decades? Starting before the condo boom (perhaps in the 70s), then in the 80, the 90s, up to the present. I remember seeing some amazing photos of its progress when one of Vancouver's former mayor came to speak at the University of Waterloo last year about sustainable cities. I believe his name was Mike Calloway? Mike something at least. He was in power back when Vancouver rejected the downtown freeway. Anyways, it be really nice to see those photos if someone has them. I'd kinda like to post them on the Canada forum. Keep in mind, if I do it, it wont be seen as boosterism by the rest of the country.
