after staring at the rendering of the peshtigo some more, i'm digging it. the gropius/pan am building references are quite obvious and pretty cool, but i still don't know about the base. it would be so much better if this building just came all the way to the ground. more renderings please.

that would be cool. i wonder if the people of peshtigo would find it interesting that a skyscraper in chicago named after their town is taller than any other building in all of wisconsin?

Skybridge

Also, the unit prices were a tad high for the Near West DINK demographic that Skybridge was courting.
Although the location was literally 'on the edge', I believe the main problem with Skybridge was almost solely due to the poor layouts of the units themselves. The building as a piece of sculpture is a masterpiece. The buyers who are attracted to that design wouldn't necessarily be scared off by the expressway location. However, many of the units were surprisingly dark with little glass and awkwardly layed-out spaces; some too deep, others too shallow. BTW, it was Ralph's first foray into high-rise condo design, and I believe the plans reflect it.

It wasnt his designs though that didnt work, it was the location. No one wants to live in a highrise where one of the most poinent views is of a constantly traffic choked expressway that creates a several block gap of seperation between neighborhoods. Im hoping and assuming there are things we are missing in this project. Something just doesnt quite fit. You can see he had fun with changing the building shape though. I'm pleased it gives a different form.

I'd assume you are talking about Skybridge? I think the conventional wisdom (which also makes sense to me) it was the size and price points of the units that were out of whack with the West Loop at the time (and perhaps still?). I'd argue that without the very high quality and innovation of the design, sales would have been even that much worse.....

No, it's there. You can only see the top, and it looks very small. If you can see 333 North Wacker, look up and to the right. It's one of the few textured buildings on there (it's not a solid color), so it's distinguishable.

does anyone even know what I'm talking about? It was mentioned here a pretty long time ago... its the development thats right next to that weird, s-shaped building. Big old plot of riverfront land right there thats basically not being used

also, in response to the river canyon being completely filled in someday, I think someone mentioned (maybe alliance) that they might start building high-rises along the north branch. This seems completely viable, and its a pretty exciting idea to me. Hopefully, someday, someone will decide to build a 700+ foot building northwest somewhere where it will inevitably "stick out like a sore thumb" but encourage development to continue in that direction at the same time.

I think the future looks good for chicago

^ yes! thanks very much. 80 story building included with 7 other buildings. holtel. 3,000 condos. It could be very good, and it could be one of the most striking buildings from the west side of downtown, what with its foreground location

anyway, I hope the plan continues forward. and i just wanted to bring it back up again

yeah there were a lot of issues. Design can only do so much.

The Pesthigo looks great - it's notable that Ralph Johnson can still uniquely deliver when there are many local copycats of his concrete/residential style.

From what it sounded like, this potential project is in the very preliminary stages - much more of a vision than an actual concrete, proposed project. I'm also very excited about what they have in mind for this site, but I'm not sure if people on this board could provide much sustantive talk about this project....I think right now, most talk about this project on here would just be speculation and hypothetical discussion.

Peshtigo ... this one reminds me a bit ... but just a bit of the building on the Inner Drive at Hawthorne. Could be lovely, I suppose, but the base is worrisome.

From what I can tell the base is facing LSD and it looks fine. It's not like we were expecting a street entrance on LSD anyway—and I like the hulking qualities of a tower on a sort of "rock" like platform, sort of reminds me of the monestary at Lhasa:

Photo: wander-woman.com

Vines could be grown on it similar to what is planned for the center base at 600 LSD.

It's funny you mention that; I remember talking with Ralph back in the late 80's about how much we admired that building. Used to be a lot better before they painted out the red spandrels within the 'framed inserts'.

As far as the base, remember Skybridge was a rather adept solution in not necessarily hiding the parking but making it an integral part of the composition. I'm sure Ralph would do nothing less here.
