The Marriot Hotel is going out for tender very soon. We have a copy of the specs here in our office, though I havent had a chance to look at them yet.

Booming Edmonton International setting new records monthly
Leaves Vancouver in its contrail as a destination for WestJet flights

Gary Lamphier
The Edmonton Journal

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

EDMONTON - Canada's fastest growing major airport? It's no contest -- Edmonton International Airport takes the crown.

In fact, June was the busiest month on record for EIA, with nearly 508,000 passengers shuffling through the terminal.

That marked the 18th straight month of double-digit growth, says Edmonton Airports CEO Reg Milley, and an eye-popping 22.2-per-cent increase over June 2006, when 416,000 travellers enjoyed the airport.

On a year-to-date basis, traffic volumes rose an impressive 18.7 per cent, to well over 2.9 million, EIA says. Calgary International Airport, the nation's second-fastest growing major airport, posted traffic growth of 10.6 per cent in the first five months of 2007, to nearly 4.9 million passengers.

At current growth rates, Milley figures Edmonton could hit the six- million-passenger mark for 2007.

After mapping out the airport's long-term projections, he's also forecasting double-digit growth rates to continue for the next five years.

"The growth we're seeing is just outstanding. Edmontonians and people throughout the region are really responding to the increases in air service," he says, including more flights to U.S. cities and Air Canada's successful non-stop daily service to London, launched last year.

"In 2006 we added a lot of new destinations -- more than probably any other city in the last decade. That's really helping us to drive traffic," says Milley.

In May, Edmonton topped Vancouver as WestJet's third-largest hub in Canada, in terms of seating capacity. Edmonton now trails only Toronto and Calgary.

"WestJet has just been a fantastic partner for us, as has Air Canada. They've added new destinations, increased capacity and are really working with us on making sure the Edmonton region grows."

Passenger traffic on connecting flights from Grande Prairie, Yellowknife, Fort McMurray and Saskatoon is also up in a big way, rising 42 per cent in 2006, versus 2005. The uptrend is continuing in 2007, Milley says.

"We're seeing our catchment area expand. If you walk through our parkade or parking lot you'll see a lot of Saskatchewan licence plates now. We're getting a lot of people driving in and connecting in Edmonton, so our profile is changing," he says.

On a year-to-date basis, domestic passenger volumes are up 15.3 per cent; U.S. traffic is up 21.3 per cent; and international traffic is up 77.7 per cent.

The latter reflects the impact of Air Canada's non-stop service to Heathrow Airport, as well as strong traffic growth to Mexico -- the top destination for international travellers -- and other vacation hot spots.

International flights have quadrupled since last summer, jumping to 12 departures per week from just three, and Milley says he's hoping to add flights to Texas, New York and either Frankfurt or Munich in the coming year.

Despite its growth, Milley says EIA could do even better if it was able to attract more of the roughly one million local passengers annually who opt to fly from airports in Calgary or Vancouver, rather than Edmonton.

"Every time somebody buys a ticket they cast a vote, and they either vote for the airport in their region or another one. And if you connect through, or drive to another airport you're not going to help us see air service grow here. The more people in the region utilize the airport, the more direct destinations we'll get."

With EIA expecting to achieve new record passenger volumes in July and August, and the terminal already running above its design capacity, Milley says travellers should allow an extra 15 minutes for parking, check-in and clearing security this summer.

Airport expansion is now underway with 1,000 new parkade stalls being added, as well as new de-icing pads and aircraft parking space. Additional terminal construction is slated to start some-time in 2008.

I love Toronto. It's a great city. We lived there for a decade, and know it well. Our kids were born there, and my wife and I began our careers there. Nearly 20 years after leaving Toronto, we still miss the big-city vibe and cultural vitality of our old haunts on Bloor Street West, Queen Street, The Beaches and Bayview Avenue.

But like any city, Toronto has its flaws. It can be smug, self-satisfied and arrogant. Too many Torontonians -- including a lot of media types -- know next to nothing about the rest of Canada. Including Edmonton.

Occasionally, their collective ignorance is reflected in the pages of the so-called national (read: Toronto) press. Witness a piece on urban thinker Richard Florida that ran in last Tuesday's Globe and Mail.

After extolling the virtues of Canada's other major cities as havens for hip, creative people, the Globe slagged Alberta's capital city as an industrial backwater. To add insult to injury, the Globe ran a photo of an oilsands mine near Fort McMurray -- as if that somehow represented Edmonton.

There's only one word for coverage like that: pathetic.

this is pretty amazing:

Edmonton if it keeps going at the current rate will be in between 6.5 and 7.0 Million this year. That isn't too far fetched. Absolutely astonishing considering 5 years ago we were around 3 Million and EIG predicted that 7 Million wouldn't happen until 2012-2015..... wow.

Actually they predicted 5.5 by 2015. 7 million is the max capacity of the current terminal.

Even if we're closing in on that #, I've never felt near-capacity at the gates. Check-in and security are another matter. Check-in is especially atrocious at AC. Two wickets for how many HUNDREDS of people?

I agree with this quote 110%

I avoid Calgary and Toronto airports like the plague. I will always go from Edmonton to a US location (usually Denver) then to wherever I need to go.

Now for another direct flight request: ANYWHERE IN FLORIDA

Seriously, no direct flights to Florida. It seems like a no brainer. And WestJet can lick my sack because to get to Florida with them you have to travel to Toronto and then to Florida and the total cost for 2 with taxes is $1700+ which is crazy. Plus it typically takes 12 hours with the layover. I ended up booking with Northwest for 634 for 2 all taxes in! Edmonton to Minneapolis and then Minneapolis to Orlando, and a total time of about 7 hours. So much better, but direct would be better still.

Frankfurt or Munich in the coming year....Sounds like LH as they are slated for expansion from FRA and MUC over the next year as they take delivery of more A330's.Also AC does not serve MUC, wich would indicate LH.Not to mention that A LH rep was recently at a EAA function.

I am surprised at that. I guess most people in the west just head straight south. But the travel agent told me lots of people from Edmonton head down there. You would think they could support a direct flight.

I agree... if you can take a direct flight to Amsterdam or London from YEG - for sure you should be able to fly to Tampa direct...

Although I'd probably never go to Florida

A flight to Munich would be stellar.

those recent numbers, where people go, indicate a florida flight should work well...perhaps a YVR-YEG-MIA?

A Flight to Fort Lauderdale would be perfect.

Tie into the Cruise lines - although it would have to be a daily one. More reliable than 3 times per week like Calgary

The Munich quote surprised me as well. This sounds more like Lufthansa than Air Canada. LH is trying to strengthen it's Munich hub but i could not see them starting a YEG-MUC route. YEG-FRA is a better possibility and one that makes more sense to me.

I think the Edmonton Mayor and anyone else with significant pull should be kissing LH's ass to get a YEG-FRA flight here.

Chuber you are too funny with your comments about WestJet. I agree though. They are no real bargain anymore. I actually prefer AC to WJ overall.

Edmonton International Airport passenger growth sets torrid pace

NEWS RELEASE July 17, 2007

Edmonton International Airport – Canada’s fastest-growing major airport – continues to record unprecedented passenger growth rates in 2007.

June 2007 was the busiest month on a per-day basis in Edmonton International’s history with 507,949 passengers, representing a 22.2 per cent increase from June 2006 when 415,822 passengers were served. Year-to-date passenger volumes have increased by 18.7 per cent.

“We are now in our 18th consecutive month of double-digit growth,” says Reg Milley, Edmonton Airports President and CEO. “What’s even more remarkable is that the entire airport community has rallied to respond to this record-breaking growth and our staff continues to provide top customer service to our many customers.”

International growth leads pack

Edmonton International is posting double-digit percentage passenger volume increases in all major market segments.

Domestic – 20.7% (June) and 15.3% (year-to-date)
U.S. – 12.2% (June) and 21.3% (year-to-date)
International –182.9% (June) and 77.7% (year-to-date)
The more than twofold increase in international passengers from June 2006 to June 2007 is driven by Air Canada’s non-stop service to London-Heathrow. Other international destinations are also on a major upswing. In the first half of 2007, Mexico continued its growth as the largest and fastest growing international destination for Edmonton, and most other sun destinations showed triple-digit increases over 2006. International flights have quadrupled since last summer, jumping to 12 departures per week from three.

On the domestic side, Sunwing’s new non-stop Toronto service and Air Canada’s summer non-stop service to Halifax helped propel domestic traffic to new highs. WestJet continues to expand rapidly at Edmonton International with almost 40 per cent of all seats dispatched belonging to the Alberta-based airline. Edmonton International also replaced Vancouver earlier in the spring as WestJet’s third largest hub.

From July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2007, almost 5.7 million passengers used Edmonton International.

“With July and August expected to be our busiest ever, we are on track to reach or surpass six million passengers in 2007,” says Milley. “The current terminal was built to handle 5.5 million passengers, so we are asking for everyone’s patience and support as we keep pace with this extraordinary growth.”

Passengers can ease their experience by arriving at the airport at least 15 minutes prior the airline-recommended check-in time to park, check-in and clear security.

Airport expansion is already underway with a 1,000 new parkade stalls currently under construction, as well as new de-icing pads and aircraft parking space. Planning continues for the terminal with additional construction slated to commence sometime in 2008.

“We have the best air service in our region’s history and we can make it even better by encouraging regional residents to always choose Edmonton International for their air travel needs,” Milley says.
