yeah, in regard to the downtown theater district, a broadway style theater is a completely different animal than either the Capitol Theater, Abravanal Hall, or the Rose Wagner. Shows like The Lion King or Wicked are much more extravagant, and appeal to a larger segment of the population. They're the glitzy part of culture. Ballet, Opera, and Symphony are a little more high-brow, and have a smaller audience. If Salt Lake could get first-run Broadway touring shows, we could sell the place out every night. This is the kind of stuff my mom and my sister-in-law get excited about--and these are
not people who would rush out to buy opera tickets. The city and county need to come up with some revenue stream to build this quick, and build it big!! Maybe Moshe Safdie can come back and design it.... The Utah Theater idea, I my opinion, should be left for dead. The building is too small, and is basically just a gutted shell anyway. It's a building that I think is lost beyond repair.
I'll second that salute to the city of Sandy, SLCforme!! I'll also extend on to RSL for pillaging the community piggy-bank for their boon-doggle. These piss-ant bedroom communities are like jackals, they smell blood on Salt Lake City, so they've been rushing in to take bites at it. Well, Sandy will get it's soccer stadium, just like WVC got it's E-Center. I hope Sandy's project will be more successful than West Valley's--an arena in a field of sprawl-- but I don't believe it will be. I'm not saying that these aren't nice places to live (although I wouldn't live there), I'm just saying that there are some things that are probably better when they are centralized in one area.
Sorry for ranting.
