Salt Lake:Official development news thread

That is so irritating to me. Salt lake city needs to be front and center in Utah...not Sandy. I mean just historically SLC is where its been about for decades.

I hope something good will come out of the overall LDS development downtown.

That's what I'm holding out for. That City Creek is so ridiculously cool - that it becomes a magnet for other projects.

I have a lot of faith in the project (no pun intended) because I have seen what's happened around the Gateway. It's transforming west Salt Lake.

If that's the case, then it can be argued that CCC is MUCH more ambitious, and therefore will have a similar (and greater) effect to the city's central core.

Hey Infill, There are a number of reasons. Probably a major one would be the Class A office park/golf course/spa/near my trophy home in the suburbs building boom going on right now. Your typical executive or up and coming can live in a beautiful new development on the mountain like Suncrest and drive five minutes to his/her luxurious office in a suburban office park. Even more important,the current need is so pressing for companies to expand they'll take the shorter time-line of Sandy,Draper,or West Valley,etc. office parks over the, "its going to take too long to build to our needs downtown towers." While downtown Salt Lake is experiencing a multi-billion dollar building boom and new towers are under or soon to be under construction, there still is a reluctance on the developers part to over commit to towers downtown, unless the buildings are pre-leased. Again, the many new companies moving to or expanding in the metro want their companies here yesterday not three years from now or however long its going to take to put up a major tower. There's no doubt that this continued upgrade boom of the downtown area will attract those players who will decide to build their towers here. We could undoubtedly use a few corporate oil towers like Denver and Calgary experienced during their 80's heyday. The good news is that Salt Lake's many beautiful historic structure's have been or are currently being restored and upgraded to a pristine condition. Also most of the tacky buildings of the 60's and seventy's have or are slated to receive an attractive new skin. As long as the boom is not short-lived Salt Lake's skyline should change dramatically over the next ten to fifteen years.

p.s One thing Salt Lake needs is another Larry Miller or Dave Checketts who has an obsessive passion for an NFL franchise. Give Salt Lake an NFL team and stadium downtown and the floodgates will break loose for downtown. I would really be interested to hear the history in establishing the Broncos sometime.

Im not real stoked on this building... just get it done already and at least give us some infill...

It has too much of an international styling feel for my liking... It looks like more of a project that a city like Boise should be getting... functional, but nothing special architecturally...

It's hard to say. The renderings make it look less than decent, however it's hard to get a feel of what the glass will look like in a drawing like this that isn't fully colored.

If done right, it could look like a mini-New York Times Tower:

These renderings still show Wasatch Partners as a partnering company. Anybody know if there are any plans to change the hight or design of the building since Wasatch Partners left the deal?

these drawings are on the docket for the final planning approval by the RDA in 4-5 days. So they are recent.

Thanks Viperlord. Anyone know when the Walker Center will be completed? The downtownrising website says it's scheduled completion is June...and yet, we're in July and it is still not finished. I can't wait until they reinstall the sign.

Nice, after almost 10 years of talking and reading articles in the paper about this tower its nice to see it finally getting built.

I just wish it stayed with what they were originally planing for its floors of 20 stories of office space and up to 8 stories of condos.

What sucks is that from this vantage point, the One Utah Center will almost be completely blocked out.

As has been said, it will make for a reasonably attractive infill on Main. Its a little difficult to tell how friendly the ground level will be. Like others I think the actual building will emerge as more attractive than these particular renderings. A big plus will be the angled corner.
The big question on this project was never really so much what we were going to get, but if we were actually going to get it. Okay, finally we know we're getting it. Let's just chalk it up to an elegant piece of infill for our beautiful capital. When you think about it there are a huge amount of very attractive infill projects going on all over downtown. And isn't that the one thing we have complained about with our downtown the most,"lack of good infill." I mean, Salt Lake has far more stunning and iconic,monumental pieces scattered throughtout the central core than most downtowns in the West. Whether its our beautiful library,city hall, temple square,the capitol just to name a few. We are now making great progress with filling in the blanks in between our many architectual jewels. Soon we will have a world class,spare no expense on materials, City Creek Center with a variety of accompanying towers. At least two of those towers will be of a respectible height, so all in all we have a lot to be excited about.
