Does anyone know for sure that an observatio deck is going up there. I always thought that would be included in the future destination center.

I believe the 'tower' people are referring to (if it is the curved structure at river landing) will be no taller than it currently is (probaby 2 stories). From the site map/diagram, it is described as a washroom/bike rental/warm up/deck area. I do not believe it is intended as an observation tower...sorry!

i now unfortunately think you are right, i found this on the meewasin website Pavillon blueprints

It is only 2 storys, the cylinder structure looks like it is the center beam? or mabey to cement the steel beam to support the accent steel pole?
Oh well it may look nice when its done. it has a fabric roof and some other neat stuff. oh well

Work started today on the King George. They are setting up a covered walkway around the building. The walkway extends in front of the former Dots location, whom they appear to have kicked out (Dots is moving to 1st Ave). My guess: they are redeveloping that spot into some higher end retail (either renos or a new one or two story building), or they are tearing it down to make way for an addition to the KG.

Let's hope this project continues without delay....

Excellent news.

When I saw Dots was moving, I figured Meridian got their hands on the property. That spot would make a great terrace/patio/courtyard for the reinvented KG.

I think it's important that they maintain streetfront retail there, but something on a roof could be very cool.

It really burns me up that Sasktel tore down a building on 2nd and now parks their trucks there. Ridiculous. Plus their service sucks.

I agree...talk about an ugly open sore along 2nd avenue...what were Sasktel or the City thinking...oh, wait a minute....I think I may have answered my own question...they weren't thinking!

2nd avenue has a lot going for it in terms of its heritage aesthetic. Hard to believe a parking lot was considered a good fit.

Great news about the KG. I wonder how soon before floor plans are advertised and the place sells out like the Riverfront project did!

I think I heard that the Affinity was going to expand. Their Insurance office might be built there.

second avenue should be saskatoons premiere shopping street, i do not remember the building, i will head down to the local history room and ask. i really hate when Saskatoon tears down old buildings for stupid reasons like that. speaking of, looks like the legion is finally coming down

im happy the legion is finally torn down, i think just because a building is old doesn't mean me have to charish it. A building needs a unique history or has to look beautiful. the legion is ugly, the only history it has that it was pretty much the old wmca and wmca's don't usually have a historical purpose or beauty.

i dont think it is ugly, that is a very sixties mentality, the likelihood of the building replacing an historic structure being torn down usually does not match the original. what ever they do use that land for i hope they use it wisely and dont waist more prime real estate like they have with toys R us and the Galaxy

I think the Galaxy is a great addition to the downtown. It's an ugly building, but it brings people to the core at night.

It looks so out of place where it is...It looks ugly there, but in a place like Normanview Crossing in Regina...it kinda fits in, I even kinda like it. Downtown theatres are a good thing...but, yuck!

who actually does anything other than go too the movie? people drive over buy their popcorn, watch their movie then go home. not only that but because of the galaxy the few theaters we have are losing business. i dont thiknk it was a bad idea to build it. i would have built it in a newer area of town like center cinemas and used that land shops etc. although i did hear that they may use the parking lot and make stores.

I dunno...there isn't much else in the immediate area is there? I think that's the problem. With the Galaxy in Regina it's in an older suburb in what was once a shopping mall. There is now the Galaxy, a Shopper's Drug Mart, Gold's Gym and a spattering of coffee shops, restaurants, etc. It's a very busy theatre and hard to get tickets so a lot of people will buy their tickets early and go shopping or go for coffee before their movie starts or they might go for something to eat after. It's actually a very vibrant area.

Last night on Global News there was a report about the KG, which has already been mentioned here. They said it would be a mix of retail space on the main floor, offices on the second (and third?) floors, and condos in the remainder of the building.

As for the site of the now-defunct Meridian on Broadway, the same report said there is a new plan for a five storey mixed-use building. Like the KG, it will have retail spaces on the main floor and condos above. While it might not be the impressive landmark that some people here were hoping for, I think it will probably fit in better with the Broadway streetscape. The smaller building should also keep construction costs down, while allaying the concerns of area residents. I doubt it will have any problems attracting tenants.

I disagree. The Pubs on Second Ave ( O'Shea's, Barking fish, ect. ) have seen an increase in traffic. People go for walks, get a cone, stuff like that. Galaxy generates a huge boost to the economy surrounding it.

As for building it in a newer area????? Do you really want the downtown to decay and become a ghost town? As architecturally amazing as the Galaxy is, They did the right thing by placing it downtown.
