WestJet Airlines Ltd. plans to expand further into the United States, looking beyond leisure destinations, WestJet president Sean Durfy said Wednesday.
WestJet already flies to 11 U.S. markets, including five in Florida, but it has now set its sights on attracting business travellers to cities such as Chicago, Houston and Dallas, Mr. Durfy said during the Merrill Lynch transportation conference in New York.
The Calgary-based carrier also plans to step up promotion of its service to Americans through U.S.-based travel websites. WestJet flights are already available on Travelocity.com, but not yet listed as an airline option on Expedia.com.
The idea is to fill some seats that would otherwise be empty on flights back to Canada.
On the Calgary-Phoenix route, for instance, 90 per cent of the business is generated from sales in Alberta, but only 10 per cent from Arizona bookings, Mr. Durfy said on the conference webcast.
WestJet also sees opportunities to provide new scheduled service to Mexico and the Caribbean, he added.
Air Canada president Montie Brewer said the country's largest airline is well positioned to expand internationally, with the addition of Boeing 777s to its fleet.
Air Canada also expects Boeing 787s to start arriving in 2010, providing more opportunities for adding new global destinations, he said.
