If you really wanted to stir the pot you should contact the powers that be at the radio station. They dont like false information on the air...Its sad but the number of people who dont realize what consolidation did for us is huge.

New North Terminal flow-through counters to streamline check-in
Renovations on WestJet check-in area begin today

WestJet guests flying domestically from Edmonton International Airport (EIA) will move through the check-in lines more quickly once renovations adding new flow-through check-in counters are completed later in the fall.

During the renovations, WestJet will move from its current check-in area to a location farther north on the main concourse of the North Terminal (Departures level). Passenger drop off for WestJet will be at door 25 and 26. Charters will continue to operate in the far northwestern corner of the North Terminal.

Flow-through counters add to the efficiency of checking in, placing bags on the baggage conveyor belt and moving toward the pre-board screening area.

With new common-user terminal equipment that allows all airlines to use any check-in counter at EIA, WestJet’s transition to the new temporary check-in area will be smooth, limiting any customer inconvenience.

WestJet and Edmonton Airports appreciate passengers’ patience during the renovations.

WestJet has significantly ramped up its services at EIA over the past several years. This spring, EIA surpassed Vancouver International Airport as the airline’s third largest domestic hub.

5. what impact would a bullet train have on the airport

this is starting to be fun… thank you for the info

-----

my response

1. YVR is Vancouver
2. Check http://www.edmontonairports.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=13-68&lang=1 ERAA had those posted on there, ask Jim for the stats if they aren't there. The two airports together created about 3 million (at the most) before consolidation.
3. All 14 routes announced in 2206 are still in running. Especially with 18% growth this year! 2007 has seen some of those expanded (ie Montreal [YUL], Las Vegas [LAS], Yellowknife [YZF 2x daily from 1x daily], Saskatoon [YXE upgraded to larger plane]. United Airlines had added larger planes to increase passenger comfort on there Chicago route. This year tour operators have decided to focus on Edmonton year round by offer flights not only to Europe during the summer, but the Carribean.
4. Out of all those flights announced, they all originate in Edmonton not Calgary. Unlike before consolidation, only a few charter flights (ie Martin Air, Air Transat) pickup passengers on there way out of Calgary or Edmonton to fill any seats. Martin Air has actually added flights that don't stop in Calgary because of strong Edmonton loads. Scheduled flights to the United States or Europe at this point in time do not stop in Calgary at all.
5. The bullet train should actually decrease bleeding from Edmonton (YEG) to Calgary (YYC). Airlines like Air Canada should see decreased Edmonton-Calgary only traffic, reducing the loads, reducing less frequency needed between YEG and YYC, thus making it less convenient for transferring through Calgary's YYC. Also if ticket prices are as they predict ($150-250 r/t) people will not see the value of paying extra to fly out of Calgary by catching the train, when most of the flights Calgary has Edmonton has.

Leslie, when was the last time you looked at the full list of non-stop flights out of Edmonton? Or for that matter flown out of Edmonton?

Terms to help you:
NonStop vs. Direct.... Nonstop does is point to point with no stop in a city like Calgary. Direct is service that includes a short stop to pick up passengers in another city like Calgary . Examples:

NonStop to London Air Canada = YEG-LHR-YEG
Direct to Amsterdam on Martin Air = YEG-YYC-AMS-YEG-YYC

Please refer to www.flyedmonton.com and see all the nonstop destinations, not direct.

If you need any more information please let me know.

Regards.

So, are "Flow-through" check in counters like what currently exists for Air Canada?

So, does this mean that those computer systems are already in place? If so, how long until the actual gates are switched over to allow any airline to utilize any gate (I hope we get some big snazzy LCD screens at both the gates and the check in counters to display the airlines and flight numbers (with regards to the gates) and to show the airline and function at the checkin in counters (ie. ticket purchasing, baggage drop off, etc.)

On the Arrivals/Departures screen at Edmonton Airports they have "London (UK) as the name used. How about changing it to just "Heathrow" instead?

I noticed Calgary uses Heathrow as their naming convention. It looks a lot better.

"London UK" looks small townish to me.

(UK) or Heathrow are fine. Might be good considering there are many flights from YEG to Gatwick.

Yes having "Gatwick" and "Healthrow" on the board would be good.

Heathrow and Gatwick do sound much better. I remember when the LHR flight started, the arrivals/departures screens said "London" only. Then someone on here contacted EIA and they changed it. If that someone is out there, maybe he or she could contact EIA again. They obviously said something right to change EIA's mind.

Lost Opportunity for Port Alberta

I see the Feds have money for an overpass - but not at YEG. Go figure. The following is a lost opportunity to build Port Alberta.

Today the Gov of Canada and Alberta announced $150M in funding to aid CPR to relocate their private sector rail yards South of Whyte Ave to allow them to consolidate a side South of Whitemud and East of Gateway Blvd. That is $150M of our tax dollars. The Feds are selling this as a strategic link in the trade corridor - and while I applaud efforts to build trade and move the yards from Strathcona - what are we as Citizens getting in return??
Looking at where this interchange and access road will be constructed for the CPR on Google Earth is a little confusing - perhaps between the two motels? I also wonder if with the generous contribution of OUR tax dollars if the land the CPR is vacating is being given to the City or Province in exchange?

Here is the link to the Press Release:

Oops...I see I was thinking it was 41 Ave and not 41 Ave SW (RR512). My error. This topic is already well covered in the E Construction forum. But my concern remains about how Port Alberta can link into this.

I don't think the opportunity is lost at all.

The CPR intermodal yard relocation has been in the works for years. CP tentatively hope to be there as early as the fall of 2009 or by the spring of 2010.

The overpass at 41 Avenue SW will be required for serving far more than the new CPR yard. I think that federal funds being offered now is more in tune with being able to provide immediate assistance to trade-route transportation. The Port Alberta concept is still viable but is yet in its infancy.

We still need a free flow access to QEII North from the airport - a new overpass should be a priority.
