okay .. well back in the early 90's it did have the CIBC logo on a new building on Hamilton. All CIBC had was a bank branch the rest of it was government offices, just like the HSBC building.

Grant Devine went to town building fancy new offices for the government .. then bragged how Saskstchewan was booming.

A couple years later the Sask gov't was in severe debt problems .. forcing the NDP (not by choice) to make large rapid cuts to apease the bond credit rating agencies, as well as raising the PST to 8%. Saskatchewan was getting close to becoming illiquid.

Yes, all we need is another booster campaign, isn't this the 4th or 5th active campaign ?

T L D R. Plus, the bad color balanced pictures made my eyes hurt.

Off topic: Does canada.com intentionally make their photographs look like garbage?

How much is the City spending, especially advertising a campaign that is aimed at Calgary in a Regina paper. This is just getting silly.

Interesting...As little as a year ago, I could open up a newspaper or walk down the street and all I saw were ads for jobs in Alberta, billboards saying "Move to Calgary!". And then you hear people complain because we're finally advertising ourselves as a place to move or to stay. People advertise because it works, not because it's a waste of money. It's that kind of forward thinking that is going to attract the type of people that this city and province need to attract in order to thrive in the future. I don't care what your feelings are on the municipal or provincial governments...sometimes a little shameless self-promotion is a good thing. When you're constantly pumping ideas into people's heads (especially when it's coming from a variety of sources...) eventually they'll start to think about it and when you think about it, for a lot of people, Regina makes sense. I've seen people go a long way on morale alone, Calgary is an example of what happens when you have the morale and something to back it up. Unfortunately they also lack direction, or maybe more accurately, sustainability...which is a symptom of growing too fast. I don't see Regina growing at anywhere near the rates of Calgary and that doesn't bother me a bit. Slow and steady wins the race...

That is all fine and dandy, but to advertise it in the Leader-Post is silly. On top of that how many do we need ?
We have :
I Love Regina
Branding Regina
Think Regina
Shaping Regina
Regina in Bloom

I am sure there are more.

Promoting one's product or even self is fine but at what point is it propaganda ?

You realize that word of mouth is one of the best forms of advertising? Many people that live in Regina have friends/family that reside in Calgary (possibly former Regina residents as well). Posting this ad in the Leader Post will allow people living in Regina to spread the word to their friends/family in Calgary about this seminar. Nothing wrong with putting that ad in the Leader Post.

Can I get some hard data on that ?

What is the success rate to $ spent ?

I said, one or two campaigns are fine but not half a dozen.

There was no Regina advertisement in the Calgary Herald today or even on Saturday. I only found out about it by looking at the Leader Post online which I rarely do. I have marked the date in my Outlook calendar so I don't forget to check it out on the way home from the office that day.

I have no intention of moving back to Regina but I will go out of curiosity. I doubt there is such a high demand for architectural technologists in Saskatchewan right now and if there is certainly not at Calgary wages. Some companies are hiring junior techs at a starting wage of $70,000 believe it or not. My firm is expanding their office in Vancouver so that is most likely where I will eventually end up living.

Nothing against Regina. Some really nice people there, and that essentially made all the difference to me while living there for 9 years.

Regina in bloom?!? Are you serious?

Regina in Bloom is a campaign to get businesses to hang flowers outside their store fronts. Hardly a campaign. ALl of those campaign's serve different functions. I love Regina is to get people to actually think positive about this city, which is rare. Branding Regina has nothing to do with the public. Shaping Regina allows Regina residents to contribute what they would like Regina to become. Think Regina is a ONE day even. Calling it "I love Regina" or "Shaping Regina" really doesn't make sense. They are trying to lure people back.

Regina in Bloom is also part of a much larger national program...And from what I can tell, all of these programs have proven to be pretty successful. I don't see the problem?

They need a $250k program for everything. It is quickly adding up to millions a year. What are the results ? 0.5% increase in population ?

Can you show me any proof that the dollars spent are being invested and reaching a goal ?

The city spends millions on promotion but $75,000 for arts is too much or $125,000 for community associations is too much. The Eureka club owes back taxes worth $15,000, no break allowed. Wingate gets nearly $1 million per year.

These are all have something to do with the public, it is our money paying for this and is another advertising campaign going to do as much for Regina as investing in our community associations or housing inspections or fixing more roads ? I doubt it.

I see Quimby is still whining and bitching like a 5 year old that wants a cookie. Seriously man, your posts are so ridiculous and predictable that I honestly wonder whether or not if you — just to be heard. I took a chance and took you off my 'ignore' list but whatta ya know......more of the same —. And to read you now complaining about the promotion of our city is beyond sad as its quite obvious what your agenda really is.

Back to the ignore list for you Potsie!!!
I'm glad you are so opinionated and your respect of others opinions but your diatribe had no sound rebuttal. I have stated many times that I am not against promotional campaigns but to have so many is a waste of money, especially when the results have been so poor.

You can use ad hominem attacks and call names but the fact is that the millions poured into the multitude of booster campaigns could and should be put to better use.

That is 1 mill rate or over 5% of your's and my property taxes. That is more funding for NC, rec programs, police, fire department, roads, sewers, etc. If all these areas were funded properly, we wouldn't need an advertising campaign to tell us how good it is. We would know.

At what point does it become propaganda ?

I think you make a very good point. If the city (or any city in general) were kept to a high standard it would be much easier to retain people and attract new ones.

I think Regina is a nice small city. It has alot of things going for it. As a city it should focus on building the best quality of life it can. I realize the city is fighting an upward battle to keep it residents, but spending tons of money on promotion may only have a short term warming effect. In the long run quality of life and economic opportunity would do much more in retaining people and attracting new residents.

People want to live where there is opportunity and a high standard of living.

Damned if Fiacco does and damned if he doesn't. There are always going to be those who think that tax dollars should be spent elsewhere but in this case I disagree. Why not promote our city and show others how proud we are of it??? This city is on the verge of a HUGE boom and why not expose that to others and let them know what is happening in our city. Just check other threads (other than this one) and you'll see that not many people in Canada know much about Regina. I posted some pics of our downtown and Wascana park in another thread and some were shocked at how beautiful our city really is. Its the closet minded thinking that has kept this city down for too long and its finally great to see those in charge these days show us off to the world. That in my opinion is money well spent and kudos to our mayor and city council for making this a high priority.
