Rumor on the street (literally; I overheard someone say this downtown at noon): "Rick Johns is putting a hotel in the old Pacific cinema".

Anyone know who Rick Johns is?

Lawrence Ryckjohn. He built the lovely Holiday Inn Express and the Centre at Circle and 8th. Hotel sounds like as good a use as any for that parcel.

That's great news. (I wonder if it will be similar to the Wingate they're building in Regina.) The lot isn't terribly huge, but what a great location! Great news for downtown!

Did anyone hear Shelagh Rogers' (host CBC's Sounds Like Canada) story on Saskatoon's housing boom today? It was great to hear our city's economic success being broadcasted to a national audience.

No new News on the 2nd Ave Lofts project or the supposed 24th and Spadina project... been a busy weekend in the city. But back to reality... I'll keep digging.

I'm being extremely speculative here, but one would have to think it won't be too long before someone snaps up the property on the corner of 22nd and 3rd, given our booming economy. Does anyone know 'who' owns that one?

I see some one new is going to have a go at a pub in Regent Plaza on 3rd where the Publican and the Brass Tap (and many other before, I'm sure) have failed. This time round it's bound to be a success (touches wood).

Saw in the SP on saturday that the Confederation Inn sold... I hope it meets the same fate as its neighbor the diesel nite club: demolition. What a depressing building that is.

This one's actually quite exciting! From what I gather, the soon-to-open restaurant 'Koutouki' is owned by the Psalios family off The Food Network's hit show, "'The Family Restaurant'. I wonder if they plan on including the restaurant's launch in the TV series.?? In any event, great news for Saskatoon.

^ I believe the one on Duchess is built. It went up at the end of last summer.

As for the 8th st. building, it is what I expected for the site. What can I say, it is not brown...

I just drove by the old RCMP building on 8th Street. The scaffold and plastic is down, and it looks like the stucco on the new façade is well on its way to being finished.

On a completely different note, I am reminded that Saskatoon's boom is not benefitting everyone. Today on 8th Street, I was approached by a panhandler and saw someone rummaging through garbage. Not that I haven't seen this on the east side before, but it's become more visible to me. I've also read local real estate blogs where some people have given up hope of ever buying a house, because their wages haven't kept pace with housing prices. I am excited by all the development in our city, but it's tempered with the knowledge that some people will actually be worse off for it.

It is frustrating to see house prices going up so rapidly, while wages are staying the same. I can relate to this, and think prices are getting out of control. People have to work 2 jobs to pay the bills. The so called boom is actually lowering the quality of life. It's the same old story,...................the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

The local and provincial gov't need to do something to increase condo supply. There is way too much demand out there.

Anyone hear his worship jaw flapping on the radio yesterday? If not, allow me to summarize: He claims there have been 16 inquiries re: River Landing since Remai backed out (including one, he says, from Asia). He also said the administration is still fixed on the idea of a hotel/spa. His claim is that they they could put up an office tower tomorrow --a rather dubious notion I'd think-- they don't want a 9 to 5 type of operation on the site. At least that part makes sense.

We'll see.

More development news, Pacific Cinemas will be reduced to rubble in the coming days. My father works for the city and received an email confirming a road closure and gas line disconnection associated with the demolition of Pacific Cinemas.

I'm not overly upset at the loss of a familiar street corner. Hopefully the new owner will show some creativity or at least some bland structure to replace Pacific Cinemas. A temporary parking lot, or something new? Only time will tell.

I find this sad. This is a fairly new building, there is structually nothing wrong with it. I'm sure something could of been done with it. Perhaps a retailer like Winner or Dollarama could of made good use of this space. It could of even been turned into a night club. This is really a shame.
