One of the biggest advantages of cut n' cover, I think.

If I recall correctly, you can see Daylight while standing at some station platforms.

Unless they have massively changed plans I believe The LINK light rail line in Seattle is going to have some of the deepest stations in the world due to the undulating geography and the need to dip below the waterways. I recall reading at one point that one station in particular is expected to be between 20-24 storeys below street level and require huge elevators to move people to and from the platform level.

The LINK light rail line is also running hugely over budget, mainly due to the extensive use of grade-separation and elevated guideways, as well as tunnelling.

I think that is the Beacon Hill Station - check out the photos if you haven't seen them:
http://www.soundtransit.org/x1584.xml

That's also what probably would have happened if Cambie St. was bored tunnel - not to that extreme, but the grades would have been shallower, meaning deeper stations (probably preventing a 33rd Ave. Future Station at the top of Little Mountain).

well the line they are building does not really serve where people need to go.........at this point the Seattle LRT is just a glorified Airport People mover......

typical Seattle.....its a car city and always will be.

Vancouver (NEWS1130) - A sink hole opened up at the Canada Line construction site at Broadway and Cambie on Sunday morning due to heavy rains. People walking nearby noticed dirty water spraying up through cracks in the sidewalk and through out the Canada Line construction site.

The Vancouver fire department says that caused a 100-meter by 30-meter hole about seven meters deep. The burst sewer line sent a torrent of smelly water through the Best Thai restaurant.

Right now you still can't get through north or south bound on Cambie between Broadway and Tenth.

*******

Strange - looks like cars are moving through the area on the webcam:

http://www.vancouver.ca/engsvcs/streets/roadwork/12th.htm
it said you can't get through north or sound bound on Cambie between Broadway and Tenth. you give wrong information because it is 12th ave.

That is not bored tunnel, however, it is cut and cover tunnel.

The RAV Project Definition Report assessed a bored tunnel for the route. Here's the cross section that was included in the report. IF a bored tunnel HAD BEEN accepted then the stations WOULD HAVE BEEN deeper, SIMILAR TO the Seattle cross section (but not as deep). (i.e. this is a prospective statement - IF, THEN... I know it is not currently a bored tunnel). Note that the accepted InTransitBC proposal currently being built provides for a much shallower bored tunnel downtown than in this report - one which passed above the Dunsmuir tunnel, not below the Dunsmuir tunnel, as was assessed in this report.

yeah, south of west vancouver and north of west vancouver is hillside. so it is difficult to make cut-and-cover tunnel at the same level. (TBM can do that easily.)

Does anyone have an approximate figure on what percentage of the tunneling along Cambie Street is completed? Are there major sections not yet completed?

I just wanted an idea. Thanks in advance.

I kinda want an idea too. Anyone? Bueller?

The only incompleted (yet to be excavated, cast, and back-filled) sections that I know of, is in the area from just south of King Edward (25th Ave), all the way to the 2nd Ave/Olympic Village station. I think there are also a few smaller sections south of 41st Ave not complete either, but I haven't been around there to really know. None of the stations will be complete, or at least back-filled for awhile (a year maybe?). I'm sure the Canada Line website has more info on this, but I can't be bothered to filter through all the documents.

Yeah, I haven't kept track.
Maybe try one of the annual or quarterly reports for a summary.

I am so there.

Hell I'll probably take the train to YVR just to get a Harvey's double cheeseburger. Mustard, mayo, onions and one pickle.
